Bruce Arena believes that U.S. Soccer made the wrong choice when it hired Mauricio Pochettino as the new head coach of the United States men’s national team last year.

Pochettino was considered a big coup for U.S. Soccer when he took over the USMNT from Gregg Berhalter. However, a recent poor run, which included losses to Panama and Canada in the Concacaf Nations League, prompted questions about his fit for the role.

Speaking at the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, hosted by USMNT legends Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, Arena expressed his own reservations about Pochettino.

“If you look at every national team in the world, the coach is usually a domestic coach,” said Arena. “And I think when you have coaches that don’t know our culture, our players, our environment, it’s hard. And listen, (Pochettino) is a very good coach. (But) coaching international football is completely different than club football.”

Arena explained that he believes Pochettino lacks familiarity with the environment he is coaching in.

“If you’re an American coaching the U.S. team, you know the culture, the pride, and how important the national team is. When you bring in somebody from the outside, they don’t understand it. Especially in our country, because we’re so different,” he added.

Bruce Arena himself is the most successful head coach in USMNT history. During his two terms at the helm, he oversaw 81 wins and won three Gold Cup titles. Arena also helmed USMNT at two World Cups, reaching the quarterfinals in 2002 and failing to get out of the group stage in 2006.

The New Orleans Saints could find themselves in a position to search for a new quarterback ahead of the 2025 NFL season. The Saints’ starting QB Derek Carr is reportedly dealing with a shoulder injury that could put his upcoming campaign in jeopardy.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Carr is currently weighing several options on how to deal with the injury, with surgery being a strong possibility.

Carr’s future with the Saints was already murky after a challenging campaign in which he missed seven games. There were rumors about the two sides parting ways in the offseason, but the franchise instead decided to lock him up for at least one more year by restructuring his contract. He went 5-5 in 2024, throwing for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

The Saints will enter the 2025 season with a new head coach in former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Without Carr, Moore is facing an even tougher task to turn around the franchise after several down years.

New Orleans also has Spencer Rattler, Ben DiNucci, and Jake Haener as options at quarterback but neither of them has significant experience. Rattler started six games as a pro, all of which came in 2024, and threw for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. DiNucci and Haener each started one game in the NFL.

There is a possibility that the Saints draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft, where they hold the No. 9 pick. Another option would be signing a free-agent veteran like Carson Wentz.

Novak Djokovic will have to wait a bit longer to get his 100th ATP singles title. Djokovic had the opportunity to reach the century mark at the 2025 Miami Open but ended up suffering a surprising loss in the finals to Jakub Mensik.

The 19-year-old Mensik was a heavy underdog entering the match, but it didn’t show in his game. He remained calm under pressure and came out on top in two tiebreaks to win the match in straight sets 7-6(4), 7-6(4).

Djokovic was hampered by eye discomfort in the match but didn’t use it as an excuse and was full of praise for Mensik after the match.

“This is a joyous moment for him and his family — an unbelievable tournament, first of many,” Djokovic said. “It hurts me to admit it, you were better. In the clutch moments, you delivered the goods. For a young player like yourself, this is a great feature.”

The 2025 Miami Open win was the first ATP title Mensik has won in his young career. It was even more special for the Czech player, considering it came against his idol.

“You’re the one I idolized when I was young,” Mensik said to Djokovic during the after-match ceremony. “I started playing tennis because of you.”

Djokovic will now have to look for another opportunity to become just the third player in the Open Era with 100 titles to his name. Roger Federer has 103 while Jimmy Connors has 109.

The Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green is looking to add another NBA Defensive Player of the Year award to his collection. Speaking with reporters after a 104-93 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, Green said that “1 million percent I have a case” to be named DPOY in 2024-25.

Green, who is considered one of the best defenders of his generation, delivered a defensive masterclass in the Bucks game. He bothered Milwaukee’s superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo throughout the game, holding him to 20 points and just five field goals. Green also made four blocks and two steals.

When asked whether he has a case for the DPOY award during a post-game interview, Green didn’t hesitate.

“Obviously, if we keep winning and close this year out strong, most definitely,” Green said. “I look around the league and don’t see many players impacting the game on the defensive end the way I do. I don’t see many players completely throwing off an entire team’s offense the way I do.”

Green added that the DPOY race is wide open after San Antonio Spurs’ star Victor Wembanyama, an early favorite for the award, was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

“So 1 million percent I have a case, and I will continue to build that case for these next 13 games. Tonight was a prime example of that,” he shared.

Green previously won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year back in 2017. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team four times while also receiving the same number of NBA All-Defensive Second Team nods.

The Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic put together a never-seen-before triple-double in a 149-141 overtime win against the Phoenix Suns. Jokic finished the night with 31 points, 21 rebounds, and 22 assists, becoming the first player in NBA history with a 30-20-20 triple-double.

This was the 29th triple-double in a season for Jokic, matching his franchise-record total from 2022-23. Additionally, his 22 assists were a career record and most-ever for center in a single NBA game.

“Nikola Jokic is one of one,” Nuggets head coach Michael Malone said. “I mean, the first player to ever have a 30, 20 and 20 game. I can’t describe him, so don’t ask me to. The guy is just an incredible player, and when you are one of one in this league and the tremendous history of this league, that says a lot. And there’s a lot of good players in this league, but Nikola, in my opinion, is just in a class well by himself.”

Nikola Jokic is currently on track to become only the third player in NBA history to average a triple-double in a season. Throughout 57 games in 2024-25, Jokic is averaging 28.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 10.6 assists per game.

On the back of Jokic’s excellent performances, the Nuggets have re-established themselves as a championship contender. They have won seven out of their last 10 games and are currently sitting third in the Western Conference standings with a 41-22 record.

Veteran safety Keanu Neal announced his retirement after eight seasons in the NFL. Neal is walking away from professional football at the age of 29.

Neal last played in the 2023 season, when he started eight games with the Pittsburgh Steelers and recorded 50 tackles, two passes defended, and one interception. The Steelers released him during the 2024 offseason due to a failed physical and he remained unsigned since.

Neal made his retirement announcement through a post on Instagram.

“Today, I am retiring from the NFL,” Neal wrote in the caption before proceeding to thank the organizations he played for and his teammates, coaches, and family.

“All the lessons learned through the game has helped mold me into who I am today,” he added.

Keanu Neal entered the league as the Atlanta Falcons’ first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. His best season as a pro came in sophomore year, when he earned his lone Pro Bowl nod after having 116 tackles, six passes defended, three forced fumbles, and one interception.

The following two seasons saw Neal deal with season-ending injuries. He tore his ACL in 2018 and Achilles in 2019, which limited him to four games during that period.

Neal bounced back in 2020 but the Falcons opted against re-signing him after his rookie contract expired. He would go on to play for the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before landing in Pittsburgh as his last NFL stop.

FC Cincinnati parted ways with Argentinean attacking midfielder Luciano Acosta on Wednesday, trading the 2023 MLS MVP to FC Dallas for $5 million in cash.

Acosta’s trade also includes $1 million in added incentives and a percentage of future transfer if he’s moved to another MLS team in the future.

Cincinnati and Dallas took advantage of trading tweaks introduced by MLS for the 2025 season to pull off the deal. Unlike previous seasons, teams can now trade for players using cash instead of assets like draft picks or general allocation money (GAM). Players involved in these types of deals receive 10% of the cash amount.

“This is a landmark signing for FC Dallas and a statement of our commitment to building a championship-caliber team,” FC Dallas president Dan Hunt said in a statement. “Bringing in a player of Lucho’s caliber –- an MVP and proven leader -– demonstrates our ambition and desire to compete at the highest level. We are thrilled to welcome him to the FC Dallas family and cannot wait to see him inspire our fans and teammates alike.”

Luciano Acosta came to MLS in 2016 joining D.C. United from Boca Juniors. He went on to spend four seasons with D.C., earning MLS Best XI nod in 2018. After his contract expired following the 2019 campaign, Acosta signed with Mexican club Atlas.

Acosta returned to MLS after just one year, joining FC Cincinnati on a Designated Player deal. He would go on to play the best stretch of his career, earning three consecutive MLS All-Star appearances and MLS Best XI honors. He was also named the MLS MVP for the 2023 season after scoring 19 goals and dishing 12 assists.

The past season saw Acosta playing on a high level as well, as he finished the 2024 campaign with 12 goals and a career-high 17 assists.

The New York Rangers made a splash move this week in hopes of getting back in the playoff contention. The team agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Vancouver Canucks that will see them land All-Star forward J.T. Miller.

To acquire Miller, the Rangers gave up Czech center Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini, and a first-round selection in 2025. The first-rounder is reportedly top-13 protected and will become unprotected in 2026 if not conveyed this year.

As part of the deal, the Canucks will also send defensemen Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington to New York.

Miller, who has 35 points (nine goals and 26 assists) in 2024-25, has been on a trading block for some time now. Despite being the Canucks’ second-leading scorer this season, his strained relationship with the team’s star center Elias Pettersson became intolerable in recent weeks and created a sense of urgency for Vancouver to move him.

The Rangers were a preferred option for Miller which helped to get the deal over the line considering his no-trade clause. He was drafted 15th overall by the franchise in 2011 and spent the first six years of his career with the franchise before being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Miller, who earned his first All-Star nod in 2024, has played 839 games since entering the NHL and has 247 goals and 427 assists for a total of 674 points.

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ goalkeeper Alex Nedeljkovic did something no other goalie in the history of the NHL managed to do in a 5-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres. He managed to record a goal and an assist in a single game.

Nedeljkovic was credited with a secondary assist for Cody Glass’ goal in the second period that gave Pittsburgh a 3-1 lead.

Nedeljkovic then scored the Penguins’ fifth goal of the game with 2:42 left in the final period after the Sabres took their goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen off the ice. The veteran took the puck behind his own goal and sent it from behind the goal line to an empty net.

Nedeljkovic, who finished the game with 40 saves, also became just the 16th goalie ever to score a goal in an NHL game.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing the puck,” Nedeljkovic said after the game. “Growing up, I watched some of the best guys do it, like Marty Turco, Marty Brodeur were two guys that I watched a lot and really learned a lot from in terms of puck handling. It’s been part of my game as long as I can remember.”

Nedeljkovic started 19 games in the 2024-25 season for the Penguins. He has an 8-7-4 record with a 3.33 goals-against average and a .890 save percentage.

The New England Patriots fired their head coach, Jerod Mayo, on Sunday. Mayo leaves the team after one season in which he led the Pats to 4-13.

PatsPats’ owner Robert Kraft said in a statement released by the team that firing Mayo was “one of the hardest decisions” he ever made but that he believed it was the best option for his efforts to bring the franchise back to championship contention.

“I am grateful for Jerod’s many contributions to the New England Patriots throughout his career and will always be rooting for his success,“ Kraft said. “I appreciate all his hard work and hope the experiences gained will help him in the future, as I still believe he will be a successful head coach in this league. I wish Jerod and his family nothing but success in the future.”

Jerod Mayo spent his entire professional career as a linebacker for the Patriots before retiring in 2015. He re-joined the team as inside linebackers coach under Bill Belichick in 2019 and quickly gained praise for his ability to connect with players. Mayo’s reputation spread around the league, and he gained consideration for various head coaching gigs after the 2022 campaign.

Kraft would go on to sign Mayo to an extension in 2023 and insert a clause in his deal that would make him the head coach when Belichick left New England. This clause came into effect just one year later, as the Pats and Belichick parted ways and Mayo was named his successor.

However, Mayo struggled in his new role. He was criticized for clock management and various other in-game decisions that hurt his team on the field. Additionally, did poorly with the media, often offering vague and contradicting answers.

It is also true that the Pats did little to set him up for success. He had one of the worst rosters talent-wise in the league, with the front office failing to be aggressive in the free agency and having a lukewarm 2024 NFL Draft class.

The Patriots will now enter a proper head-coaching search, with Patriots Hall of Fame member and former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel considered the favorite.
