The long-anticipated boxing match between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk for undisputed heavyweight title has been postponed. The two boxers were set to meet in a ring in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on February 17, but Fury was forced to withdraw due to a sparring injury.

Fury confirmed the news on social media following multiple reports about the postponement of the fight. The 35-year-old Fury earned a cut just above his right eye and required “urgent medical attention and significant stitching.”

“I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition,” Fury said in a statement provided by his promotion. “I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event, and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed. I can only apologize to everyone affected, including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans, as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

The fight between Fury, who holds the WBC belt, and Usyk, who is the reigning WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight champion, was years in the making. At one point, it seemed like it would never happen, but the money and the prestige that came with their bout was eventually too tempting for either fighter to pass.

The new date for the fight is yet to be determined, although some reports indicate that it could happen in June. If it happens, the boxing world will receive its first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belts era.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou will face each other in a boxing ring in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, later this year.

The 10-round boxing match has been confirmed by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority. Further details about the event remain under wraps, but the fight is reportedly scheduled for March 9.

Joshua has won his last three boxing matches, recapturing his momentum after back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk that cost him his titles. The 34-year-old champion was initially set to face former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in early 2024, but the fight was called off once Wilder suffered a unanimous decision loss to Joseph Parker in December.

Ngannou, on the other hand, is showing that he isn’t one-and-done in boxing. The MMA legend made his boxing debut in October, facing current WBC champion Tyson Fury and delivering an inspired performance. While Fury ended up winning, it was a split decision, and Ngannou managed to send Fury to the ground at one point during the fight.

Prior to the fight between Joshua and Ngannou, Riyadh will also host the boxing match between Usyk and Fury, which will square off for the undisputed heavyweight title in February.

Tyson Fury, the world’s heavyweight boxing champion under WBC, secured an opponent for his next fight. But it won’t be Oleksandr Usyk or Anthony Joshua. Instead, Fury is set to fight former UFC champion Francis Ngannou.

According to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Fury, and Ngannou have a fight scheduled for October 28 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Currently, there are no details about the specific rules and number of rounds. It is also unclear whether Fury’s WBC belt will be on the line.

While this development might come as a surprise for casual boxing fans, it is something that Fury actually hinted at.

“Big Francis Ngannou is here today,” Fury said after his win over Dillian Whyte last year. “He’s on my hit list in an exhibition fight, however, he wants it: in a cage, in a boxing ring, boxing gloves, UFC gloves, we can make it happen. I think everyone wants to see it.”

Ngannou also previously said that he wants to give boxing a try.

“My next step has to be boxing,” Ngannou told ESPN back in March. “I want to do one boxing match first, and then maybe go back to MMA because I still enjoy MMA. I want to do a couple of fights in boxing.”

Fury previously negotiated a fight with Usyk that would result in an undisputed heavyweight world champion. However, the two camps couldn’t come to an agreement. Fury’s last boxing match was in December when he defeated Derek Chisora via TKO.

Ngannou’s last MMA fight was the win again Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 in early 2022 when he retained the UFC Heavyweight Championship belt. His contract with UFC later expired, and he opted to explore other options.

Manny Pacquiao, one of the greatest boxers of all time, is plotting a surprise return to the sport. According to his MP Promotions, Pacquiao plans to come out of retirement for a fight against WBA Continental welterweight champion Conor Benn.

The talks about the fight are still ongoing, as Benn is also considering Kell Brook and Chris Eubank Jr. as potential opponents. If the two sides manage to get a deal done, the boxing match will take place in June in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., according to sources.

Pacquiao had his most recent fight in August 2021, when he lost to Yordenis Ugás in WBA (Super) welterweight title match. One month after the event, Pacquiao said that he was retiring from boxing in a lengthy video posted on social media.

After retiring from boxing, Pacquiao continued his political career in his native Philippines. Already having a seat in the Philippine Senate, he decided to run for the presidency in the 2022 Presidential Elections. He finished third in the elections.

Now, MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons says that Pacquiao actually stepped away from boxing so he could focus on his presidential campaign. But now the only eight-division world champion in the history of boxing is ready to get back in the ring and believes he can still fight at a high level.

“Manny is an all-time great, and he feels like he still has a lot of fight left in him, and he still wants to compete at the highest level. And this fight [vs. Benn] was presented to him by [promoter] Eddie Hearn, and he agreed. The ball is in Eddie Hearn’s court. Pacquiao ready to go,” Gibbons told ESPN.

UFC has a new lightweight champion after UFC 280. Challenger Islam Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira via submission at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena on Saturday to take the lightweight belt and follow in the footsteps of his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The fight against Oliveira was the first shot at a UFC title for Makhachev, and he made sure he didn’t waste it. The 31-year-old absorbed the early pressure from the reigning champ and kept looking for ways to move the fight to the ground.

Oliveria looked like he wanted to get the job done early on, and his eagerness left windows of opportunity for Makhachev. The Dagestan fighter used one of them in the second round, dropping Oliveira to the canvas with a hard right punch.

Makhachev didn’t let Oliveira catch his breath, getting on top and managing to get a choke triangle on him. The Brazilian tried to fight it off for a few seconds before tapping out.

This was the 23rd win out of 24 fights for Makhachev in his MMA career. His only loss came against Adriano Martins at UFC 192 in 2015, and he has since 11-0, counting the win over Oliveira.

On the other hand, Oliveira dropped to 33-9 and saw his 11-win streak come to an end.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua will get a surprising new opportunity to fight for a title again. Joshua accepted to fight WBC champ, Tyson Fury, with the fight reportedly expected to take place on December 3rd at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

The news was confirmed by 258MGT, Joshua’s management company, via social media on Tuesday.

According to ESPN, despite Joshua agreeing to the fight under Fury’s terms, there are still some hurdles the two camps will have to overcome. Principality Stadium is reportedly a stand-in, as promoters are trying to gauge interest from more high-profile venues. Also, it is unclear who will broadcast the fight since Joshua and Fury have exclusive deals with different broadcasters.

Joshua, who has a career record of 24 wins and three losses, had his last fight in August against Oleksandr Usyk. The 32-year-old suffered a split-decision loss, meaning he failed to recoup the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO titles he lost the first two times they met in the ring.

Fury, who is undefeated in 32 fights, most recently had a TKO win against Dillian Whyte in April to retain his WBC and The Ring heavyweight titles. The 34-year-old boxer announced he was retiring in early August but quickly changed his mind and expressed interest in a unification fight against Usyk. After Usyk said he doesn’t intend to fight anymore this year, Fury then shifted his focus to Joshua.

The upcoming boxing match between YouTuber Jake Paul and boxer/TV personality Tommy Fury will have a star-studded undercard. According to the announcement made by Most Valuable Promotions on Tuesday, one of the warm-up bouts will see NFL running back Frank Gore and retired NBA point guard Deron Williams meeting in the ring.

The fight between Gore and Williams will take place on December 18th in Tampa. It will be contested at a 215-pound contractual limit and will have four rounds. Both fighters are making their boxing debuts.

While the news may seem surprising, both Gore and Williams have some experience with combat sports and are serious about the bout. According to ESPN, Gore is a boxing enthusiast and has been training the sport for years now. He even decided to pass on the opportunities to play professional football this season so he could pursue his first boxing fight.

Williams, on the other hand, is well familiar with mixed martial arts and is co-owner of an MMA gym in Dallas.

Frank Gore played 16 years in the NFL, suiting up for the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts among other teams. He last played professional football in 2020, when he made 14 starts for the New York Jets and rushed for 653 yards and two touchdowns. The 38-year-old, who has five Pro Bowl nods, is still not officially retired.

Deron Williams ended his professional career in NBA in 2017 after stints with the Utah Jazz, the Brooklyn Nets, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He made three All-Star stints during his career.

After recently canceling his fight with Otto Wallin, WBC interim titleholder Dillian Whyte isn’t interested in any rescheduling. Instead, Whyte immediately wants to take on WBC belt holder Tyson Fury and attempt to unify the title.

Whyte confirmed his plans while chatting with BBC Five Live boxing podcast on Tuesday.

“That’ll be the plan,” Whyte said when asked about fighting Fury next year. “It’s Wallin or Fury next. Of course, Wallin is going to be upset. He’s spent money he thought he was going to earn. Many times I’ve had fights fall through, you can’t be upset.”

Whyte, who has a 28-2 professional record, won the WBC interim heavyweight title in 2019 after beating Oscar Rivas via unanimous decision. He successfully defended the title against Mariusz Wach before losing it to Alexander Povetkin in August 2020. Whyte managed to get the title back in a rematch that took place in early 2021.

Tyson Fury, on the other hand, won the WBC belt in February 2020 by beating Deontay Wilder via TKO. Fury then knocked out Wilder earlier this month in a thrilling rematch to keep the belt.

It remains to be seen whether Whyte’s plans to take on Fury pan out. The WBC already made it clear that they want Fury to fight the interim titleholder. But Fury is believed to be more interested in waiting to see the outcome of the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua and then fight the winner for the undisputed heavyweight title.

Wallin also doesn’t intend to give up on his bout with Whyte. His promoter is pushing to reschedule the fight while also asking for an independent doctor to check Whyte and see whether his injury is genuine.

Manny Pacquiao, the only eight-division champion in boxing history, is hanging his gloves and retiring from professional boxing. Pacquiao revealed his decision in a video posted on Instagram.

Pacquiao, who turns 43 in December, had his last fight in August against Yordenis Ugas. The boxing legend lost the fight via unanimous decision and lost his WBA (Super) welterweight title.

“It is difficult for me to accept that my time as a boxer is over,” said Pacquiao. “Today, I am announcing my retirement. I never thought that this day would come. As I hang up my boxing gloves, I would like to thank the whole world, especially the Filipino people, for supporting Manny Pacquiao.”

Manny Pacquiao retires with a professional boxing record of 62 wins, eight losses, and two draws. He won twelve major world titles and is the only boxer to hold championship belts in four different decades. Pacquiao won his first title in 1997 at the age of 18 when he took the OPBF flyweight belt and followed this up with the WBC flyweight title win one year later. His most recent title, WBC flyweight, came in 2019 at the age of 40.

Following his retirement, Pacquiao is expected to focus on his political career. He already serves as a senator of the Philippines since 2016 and has confirmed he intends to run for president at the upcoming elections in 2022.

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield saw his boxing comeback end in an unspectacular fashion over the weekend. Holyfield managed to last less than two minutes in the ring against ex-UFC light heavyweight champion before the referee stepped in and awarded the win to his opponent via technical knock-out.

Holyfield, who had his last boxing match in 2011, wasn’t even supposed to fight Belfort. The 58-year-old only stepped in after Belfort’s original opponent Oscar De La Hoya was ruled out of the fight due to a positive COVID-19 test.

It didn’t take long to see that this was the wrong decision.

Belfort, boxing only for the second time in his career, overwhelmed Holyfield with his physicality and well-placed punches from the get-go. Holyfield managed to land once, but besides that, he was mostly focused on damage control.

This proved to be a tough task, as Belfort sent Holyfield on the canvas twice in the first minute and half of the fight. Holyfield returned on his feet both times, but the referee decided to put an end to the fight after another vicious attack from Belfort.

Speaking with ESPN after the fight, Belfort said that he didn’t feel any remorse for his opponent despite his age and pointed out that Holyfield tried to knock him out early in the bout.

“He came very hard in the beginning. It’s a fight. He’s a legend,” Belfort added.

Since the fight was sanctioned as an exhibition, Evander Holyfield keeps his 44-10-2 professional record. Overall, it was his first loss since his 2008 fight against Nikolai Valuev for the WBA heavyweight title.

Vitor Belfort, on the other hand, is 2-0 in his two boxing matches. He holds a 26-14 MMA record.
