The post Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin Scores 895th Career Goal, Becomes NHL’s All-Time Leading Scorer appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Ovechkin broke the record in his 1,487th game in the NHL. Curiously, it is the same number of games that Gretzky played before retiring with a career goal total of 894.
Ovechkin scored the record-breaking goal with a shot from the top of the left circle with 12:34 left in the second period.
The game was paused after the goal to properly honor Ovechkin’s historic achievement. He was treated to a ceremony that included Gretzky and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who were in attendance, congratulating Ovechkin.
“This is something crazy,” Ovechkin told reporters after the game. “I’m probably going to need a couple more days. Maybe a couple weeks to realize what it means to be No. 1 … All I can say: I’m very proud. I’m very proud for myself. I’m really proud for my family, for all my teammates, that helped me to reach that milestone, and for all my coaches. It’s huge. It’s an unbelievable moment.”
The Capitals selected Alex Ovechkin first overall in the 2004 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2005–06 and has since become one of the best players the league has ever seen. Over the course of his career, he earned eight First-Team All-Star selections and was named Hart Memorial Trophy recipient three times. Ovechkin also led the Capitals to the Stanley Cup championship in 2018.
While Gretzky ceded his spot as NHL’s all-time leading scorer, he still holds 37 other regular season records. These include career assists (1,963) and career points (2,857), both of which appear safe for the time being.

]]>To acquire Miller, the Rangers gave up Czech center Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini, and a first-round selection in 2025. The first-rounder is reportedly top-13 protected and will become unprotected in 2026 if not conveyed this year.
As part of the deal, the Canucks will also send defensemen Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington to New York.
Miller, who has 35 points (nine goals and 26 assists) in 2024-25, has been on a trading block for some time now. Despite being the Canucks’ second-leading scorer this season, his strained relationship with the team’s star center Elias Pettersson became intolerable in recent weeks and created a sense of urgency for Vancouver to move him.
The Rangers were a preferred option for Miller which helped to get the deal over the line considering his no-trade clause. He was drafted 15th overall by the franchise in 2011 and spent the first six years of his career with the franchise before being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Miller, who earned his first All-Star nod in 2024, has played 839 games since entering the NHL and has 247 goals and 427 assists for a total of 674 points.

]]>Nedeljkovic was credited with a secondary assist for Cody Glass’ goal in the second period that gave Pittsburgh a 3-1 lead.
Nedeljkovic then scored the Penguins’ fifth goal of the game with 2:42 left in the final period after the Sabres took their goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen off the ice. The veteran took the puck behind his own goal and sent it from behind the goal line to an empty net.
Nedeljkovic, who finished the game with 40 saves, also became just the 16th goalie ever to score a goal in an NHL game.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing the puck,” Nedeljkovic said after the game. “Growing up, I watched some of the best guys do it, like Marty Turco, Marty Brodeur were two guys that I watched a lot and really learned a lot from in terms of puck handling. It’s been part of my game as long as I can remember.”
Nedeljkovic started 19 games in the 2024-25 season for the Penguins. He has an 8-7-4 record with a 3.33 goals-against average and a .890 save percentage.

]]>The Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday that Liljegren is heading to San Jose Sharks in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, a sixth-rounder in 2026, and defenseman Matt Benning.
Liljegren was on the trade block in the summer but ended up staying in Toronto and signing a two-year, $6 million deal. However, the new head coach, Craig Berube, wasn’t a fan of Liljegren from the very start, which caused the 25-year-old Swede to be a healthy scratch in all but one game this season.
The rebuilding Sharks are taking a low-risk gamble on Liljegren, hoping that more time on the ice will help him get closer to realizing his potential. The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, get some assets they could use further down the road for a player they will actually count on.
The Maple Leafs selected Timothy Liljegren with the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Liljegren spent two seasons with their AHL affiliate, Toronto Marlies, where he was part of the team that won the Calder Cup in 2017-18 while also being the youngest defenseman in the league.
Liljegren’s NHL debut came in 2020, and he would go on to become a regular feature in the Maple Leafs’ lineup in the 2021-22 campaign. Overall, he played in 197 games, scoring 14 goals and dishing 51 assists for a total of 65 points.

]]>The move ensures that Kraken holds onto its first-ever draft pick for years to come. Seattle picked Beiners with the second-overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, the inaugural one for the young franchise.
“Matty has been a core part of our team since making his NHL debut, not only on the ice but in his commitment to our community and our fans,” Kraken general manager Ron Francis said in a statement. “… We’re looking forward to seeing Matty take the next steps as a player and watching him contribute to many more memorable moments for our franchise.”
Beniers played his first full season with the Kraken in 2022-23 and contributed with 57 points (24 goals and 33 assists) in 80 games. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy, equivalent to the Rookie of the Year award, while also making the All-Star team.
Beniers didn’t manage to make the same impact last season, finishing the 2023-24 campaign with 15 goals and 22 assists for a total of 37 points. However, Kraken’s front office and coaching staff obviously believed this was just part of the growing process and didn’t hesitate to put a big contract in front of him on the first opportunity they got.

]]>The post Kings Trade Center Pierre-Luc Dubois to Capitals for Goalie Darcy Kuemper appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>The deal is reportedly a pure one-for-one trade, with neither team retaining any salary and no picks involved.
Dubois joined the Kings in a trade from the Winnipeg Jets ahead of the 2023-24 season. The LA team gave up three players, including forward Alex Iafallo, and a second-round pick in the deal while signing Dubois to an eight-year, $68 million contract.
Despite being expected to become a new star for the Kings, Dubois delivered a disappointing campaign. He managed just 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points in 82 games of the regular season while being limited to one point in the postseason.
The move for the Kings was likely motivated by their desire to get off Dubois’ contract, which will pay him $59.5 million in the next seven years. Meanwhile, they are getting a former All-Star in Kuemper to boost their struggling goalkeeping unit.
On the other hand, the Capitals are taking a gamble that Dubois can still reach his full potential and return to his previous form, which saw him record 63 points with the Jets in 2022-23.
“This acquisition brings in a talented 25-year-old with immense potential to become a top-tier center in the NHL,” said Capitals GM Brian MacLellan in a statement after the trade was announced. “With his size, exceptional skating, and high hockey IQ, we are confident he will thrive in our organization with increased responsibility and opportunity.”

]]>The Panthers have given up a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick and a third-round selection in 2025 to land Tarasenko. As part of the trade, the Senators will retain 50% of Tarasenko’s $5 million salary in 2023-24.
Despite sitting at the top of the Atlantic Division, the Panthers have struggled with getting goals throughout the season. Adding Tarasenko is a significant step in resolving this issue, considering his scoring prowess. Since making his debut in the NHL, Tarasenko compiled six campaigns with 33 or more goals.
This season, Tarasenko’s scoring dropped off, and he has only 17 goals, alongside 24 assists, in 57 games. However, with better playmaking surrounding him in Florida, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he starts racking up goals on a more frequent basis.
The Senators, on the other hand, get some assets for a player on an expiring contract. While the return seems underwhelming, their hands were tied, considering that Tarasenko had a no-movement clause in his contract and was required to green-lit any trade.
Prior to joining the Senators as a free agent this past offseason, Tarasenko also suited up for the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers. He is a four-time All-Star and was part of the Blues team that won a Stanley Cup in 2019.

]]>The news comes after weeks of speculations about Pettersson’s future. He was set to enter restricted free agency after the 2023-24 campaign, and there was a loud chatter that the Canucks might trade him if he didn’t sign a new deal.
However, the two sides managed to come to an agreement that will see Pettersson earn $92.8 million in the next eight years while also getting a no-movement clause starting the 2025-26 season. His deal comes with an average annual value of $11.6 million, marking the fifth-highest cap hit in the NHL.
Pettersson, who serves as an alternate captain for the Canucks, has 29 goals and 46 assists for a total of 75 points in 62 games this season.
“I am very happy to be continuing my career as a member of the Vancouver Canucks. I love this city and playing in front of the fans. We have an exciting group and believe we can do good things in the future,” Pettersson said in a statement.
Elias Pettersson made his debut with the Canucks in 2018–19. Since then, he played 387 games, contributing 398 points (165 goals and 233 assists). Pettersson won the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2019 and has four All-Star appearances.

“He’s going to go down there and skate for two or three days,” said Allvin. “We’ll see how he is down there and reevaluate from there.”
If Kessel ends up signing with the Canucks, it would be on a team-friendly deal. They currently have around $650,000 in free cap space.
Kessel would likely provide depth and championship experience to the Canucks’ team that feels ready to win it all this year. They are currently sitting first in the Pacific Division and have the NHL’s best record at 36-12-6.
Phil Kessel previously played with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Arizona Coyotes, and Vegas Golden Knights. He has 1,286 NHL games and 992 points under his belt while making three All-Star appearances.
Kessel spent the 2022-23 season with the Golden Knights, helping the franchise to win its first Stanley Cup. He played in all 82 regular season games, scoring 14 goals and dishing 22 assists for a total of 36 points.

While the Blackhawks have been rebuilding over the past few seasons, the current campaign has been difficult for them. Going 14-32-2, the Blackhawks find themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference Central Division.
