Inter Miami Close to Signing Former Atlanta Standout Leandro Gonzalez Pirez

Argentinian center back Leandro Gonzalez Pirez could return to MLS just several months after leaving Atlanta United for Liga MX side Club Tijuana. This time, however, Pirez will wear the Inter Miami jersey.

Pirez, who was an MLS All-Star with Atlanta in 2019, joined Tijuana back in January for an undisclosed fee. But, according to The Athletic’s Paul Tenorio, the 28-year-old center had enough after just 14 appearances in Mexico and is ready to return to the United States.

Leandro Gonzalez Pirez spent the majority of his career in his native Argentina, where he played with River Plate and Estudiantes among other clubs. Pirez came to MLS in 2017, joining Atlanta for the team’s inaugural season in the league, and proceeded to make 115 appearances in the following three years. He helped the team to win MLS Cup in 2018 and Campeones Cup in 2019.

With Pirez, Inter Miami should have one of the most reliable defensive lines in MLS this season. The team’s back four already features MLS veteran Alvas Powell, Venezuelan U20 international Christian Makoun, and talented Argentinian back Nicolás Figal.
