The Green Bay Packers confirmed on Tuesday that inside linebacker Jaylon Smith has been released from his contract. This comes after Smith signed for the Packers less than a month ago.
During his brief tenure with the Packers, Smith played in two games, tallying a total of 27 snaps and just a single tackle. These appearances came in the 24-14 victory over the Chicago Bears in week 6 and the 24-10 win against Washington a week later.
Picked by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Smith was released by the Cowboys a little over a month ago. Because the Cowboys had the duty to pay all of Smith’s $7.2 million guaranteed salary for the season, his arrival at the Packers appeared to be good business. In total, Green Bay was only required to pay him a league minimum of $900,000.
Since beginning his NFL career, Smith has struggled with injury issues. Having incurred a knee injury during his final college game, Smith missed out on his entire rookie season. Since then, however, Smith appeared in every Cowboys’ game up until his release.
