There will be no Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal final at the 2019 US Open. The potential epic matchup between the two was ruined by Grigor Dimitrov, who eliminated Federer in quarterfinals match on Tuesday night.

Dimitrov, who entered this year’s tournament as an unseeded player, claimed an unlikely 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in a match that was highlighted with Federer’s 63 unforced errors and his struggles with neck and back pain.

After the fourth set, Federer decided to take a medical break which lasted 10 minutes. However, he couldn’t recover enough to close out the match which Dimitrov used to grab his first career win over the Swiss legend.

“Grigor was able to put me away,” – said Federer after the match. “I fought with what I had.”

Federer was chasing his fifth US Open title, first since 2008. And he there was a good chance that he might have reached that, considering that the overwhelming favorite Novak Djokovic retired from the tournament due to an injury.

“Just disappointed it’s over because I did feel like I was actually playing really well after a couple of rocky starts,” – he added. “It’s just a missed opportunity, to some extent.”

Dimitrov, on the other hand, will play his first semi-finals at Flushing Meadows. Although once ranked No.3 in the world, the Bulgarian hit a rough patch in recent years and he is now No.78 ranked tennis player on ATP list.

Beating Federer might just be a lucky break for Dimitrov, or it could mean he is on track to resurrect his career. We’ll find out on Friday when he faces fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev in an attempt to reach his first Grand Slam finals.

After we witnessed several surprises in the men’s singles at the 2019 US Open in previous days, the time came for shockers in the women’s singles as well. The current Wimbledon champion and No.4 seeded Simona Halep was eliminated in the second round of the tournament by unseeded Taylor Townsend.

The match started great for Halep, as she easily won the first set with 6-2. Townsend, however, managed to remain composed and started playing a lot better in the second set, managing to get a confident 6-3 victory.

Then, in the third set, both players gave their best, which lead to a nerve-wracking tie-breaker. Although the experience was on Halep’s side, Townsend was the one who kept her calm when it mattered the most and ended on a winning end of a 7-4 result.

This was another early elimination for Halep at the US Open, and it seems like she just can’t catch a break at this tournament. Prior to this, the 27-year-old Romanian saw two consecutive first-round exits in Flushing Meadow.

For Taylor Townsend, on the other hand, this might be an opportunity to finally have her big Grand Slam break. This was the first time she advanced in the third round on US Open, and it ties her best Grand Slam success, as she also played the third round at French Open in 2015.

“This means a lot,” – said Townsend after the match. “It’s been a long journey. … I’ve had some really close matches this year and just haven’t been able to get over the hump. This match means so much, and it gives me so much confidence to know that I can do it.”

The 2019 US Open is only entering its second round, but we are already witnessing some shockers. Fourth seed Dominic Thiem and eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas both suffered defeats in their opening matches and have surprisingly been eliminated from the tournament.

Thiem, who reached quarterfinals last year, faced unseeded Italian Thomas Fabbiano on Wednesday and entered the match as an overwhelming favorite. Still, Fabbiano, who is ranked 92nd in the world, caught the 25-year-old Austrian by surprise and fairly easy grabbed a win with 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in sets.

Although Fabbiano put up an impressive performance, Thiem’s downfall was largely contributed by his shaky backhand and 48 unforced errors.

“I got very, very tired and exhausted after two sets. I’m far away from 100 percent. Like this, it’s very tough to win,” – Thiem admitted after the match. “I went on court because in tennis, especially in long two-week tournaments, anything can happen.”

The eighth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas also lasted only four sets, before being eliminated by No.43 ranked Andrey Rublev.

Tsitsipas lost the first set, but it looked like he might take control of the match after winning a nerve-wracking tiebreaker in the second set. Things, however, went south for the 21-year-old Greek in the next two sets as he clashed with chair umpire Damien Dumusois on several occasions and began struggling with cramps.

With Tsitsipas losing his nerves and step towards the end of the match, Rublev seized the opportunity and got a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (7), 7-5 win to advance into the next round.

Other surprising exits in the first round of 2019 US Open include the elimination of Wimbledon semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut, who fell down against unseeded Mikhail Kukushkin and the loss of ninth-seeded Karen Khachanov against Vasek Pospisi.
