The Los Angeles Rams’ star defensive tackle Aaron Donald announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday. Donald, who won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors three times, retires after 10 years in the league.

Donald shared the news on his social media, posting a statement and a short video recapping his time in the NFL.

“For 10 years, I have been fortunate to play the game of football at the highest level. I’m thankful for the people I’ve met along the way, the relationships I’ve built and the things I’ve accomplished with my teammates and individually,” Donald said in the statement while adding that he is “excited about the off the field possibilities.”

The news about Donald’s retirement doesn’t come as a surprise, even though he is only 32. He already contemplated retirement after helping the Rams win Super Bowl LVI. At the time, he was talked out of retirement with an improved contract that saw him become the first non-quarterback to earn more than $30 million annually.

This time, however, it appears that Donald has firmly made up his mind and is saying goodbye to football for good despite coming off a productive 2023 season that saw him make 53 tackles, 8.0 sacks, and three pass deflections en route to his 10th consecutive Pro Bowl appearance.

Aaron Donald entered the league as the Rams’ 14th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. In the following decade, he established himself as one of the greatest defensive players of all time. He made the First-team All-Pro eight times, which is second-most by a player in his first 10 seasons in the history of the NFL.

Donald retires with 111.0 sacks in 154 games as a pro, which puts him at the top of the Rams’ all-time list. Over the course of his career, he also made 543 tackles, 260 QB hits, and 24 forced fumbles.

The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald just got a big pay rise from the Los Angeles Rams. According to multiple reports, the Rams reworked Donald’s deal to make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the history of the league.

Donald entered the offseason having three years left on the six-year, $135 million extension he signed back in 2018. While he was the league’s highest-paid defensive player at the time, his deal became less favorable over time. This prompted the 31-year-old player to start mulling retirement if the Rams didn’t offer him a new deal.

The LA team couldn’t allow losing their best player, so they decided to bump Donald’s salary and bring the total value of the remaining three years to a reported $95 million. As a result, the eight-time Pro Bowler will now earn a combined $65 million in 2022 and 2023 while having an option to retire afterward or return to play for $30 million in 2024.

The Rams confirmed the agreement but didn’t disclose the financial terms.

“He’s earned it,” said Rams’ head coach

Sean McVay during a chat with SiriusXM on Monday.” And he truly is one of one in my opinion. Means so much to me, to our organization. I think the respect that he’s garnered around this league from guys that have done it at such a high level. What he’s accomplished through his eight years is unparalleled.”

Since entering the league as a first-round selection in 2014, Aaron Donald has established himself as one of the best defensive players in the league’s history. He earned a Pro Bowl nod in each season and has seven First-team All-Pro honors on top of that. The Pitt product has 441 career tackles and 98.0 career sacks.

After defeating the Los Angeles Rams 32-18, the Green Bay Packers are headed to the NFC Conference Championship game for the second straight year.

Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur makes history by being the first coach to take his team to the conference championship game in each of his first two seasons with the team.

But not a lot of coaches have had someone like quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is the clear favorite to win the MVP award this year. Rodgers continued to shine in the playoffs, picking apart the vaunted Rams defense to the tune of 296 passing yards and two touchdown passes.

The Green Bay offensive line performed brilliantly as well, not allowing the Rams to sack Rodgers even once. However, the fact that Los Angeles standout defender Aaron Donald was playing injured definitely factored into the Rams’ lack of pass rush.

Los Angeles quarterback Jared Goff, who was playing through a serious thumb injury, battled valiantly and kept the Rams in the game for as long as he could.

But the Packers’ offensive attack was too much to overcome in the end. Complimenting Rodgers all day was a fantastic rushing attack that tallied 188 yards on the ground.

Green Bay will be hosting the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week to battle it out for the right to represent the NFC in this year’s Super Bowl.

Thanks to the Los Angeles Rams’ impeccable defense, no one can really count them out of the running for a title. Even though they stumbled into the playoffs without the greatest record, they were still able to oust the higher-ranked Seattle Seahawks and prove that they belonged.

Rams running back Cam Akers especially shined in the 30-20 victory, rushing for 131 yards to go with a touchdown as well. But as we just mentioned, the main punch that the Rams brought was on defense.

Due to LA’s stifling defensive line, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson wasn’t looking like his usual self. All-Pro tackle Aaron Donald had two sacks, Leonard Floyd chipped in with another two, and the whole team had five in total. Even when they weren’t getting sacks, they put intense pressure on Wilson and didn’t let him get comfortable.

But one of the biggest highlights of the Rams’ defense on Saturday’s game took place when Darious Williams intercepted a pass by Wilson and then ran 42 yards for a touchdown. This ended up being the spark that the Rams never looked back from.

Rams quarterback Jared Goff solidified the victory by finding Robert Woods in the endzone with nearly five minutes left in regulation.
