]]>Currently, the Celtics center is in the final year of a four-year, $109 million contract. By approaching Horford with this extension, Boston is preventing a repeat of what happened in 2019, when Horford left the team for a more lucrative free agency offer.
In what is now his second tenure with the Celtics, Horford has revived his career. He contested 437 shots in the NBA playoffs in 2022; the most in the league. He is also one of five players to contest 400 shots or more since tracking began over a decade ago.
A five-time All-Star, Horford is averaging 10.9 points and 6.3 rebounds in 31 minutes a game this season. His importance in the Celtics’ attacking lineup has been amplified following the injury of starting center Robert Williams III. Currently, Horford has the third-highest shooting percentage among centers, with 55.5% from the floor and 48.8% on three-pointers.
The number three overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Horford spent nine seasons at the Atlanta Hawks before joining Boston in 2016 on free agency. He then joined Philadelphia in 2019 before spending a season at Oklahoma City and then rejoining the Celtics in 2021.

]]>The 33-year-old forward/center spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Atlanta Hawks, where he established himself as one of the most consistent and productive big men in the league. The former 3rd overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft made four All-Star teams during his tenure in Atlanta.
Horford then moved to Boston to play with the Celtics for the 2016-17 season, where he became an integral part of three straight playoff teams. Like a fine wine, Horford got better with age while in Boston, putting up his best overall season last year with a 13.6 point, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game line in only 29 minutes per game. He shot 53.5% from the field.
Now, the University of Florida alum will have the opportunity to pair up with young sensation Joel Embiid down low in the Sixers’ frontcourt, a tantalizing proposition for a team that will have big dreams to contend for the Eastern Conference crown.
The Sixers are expected to make the signing official later this week.

]]>Things got even worse when Boston sports writer Steve Bulpett reported that Horford is leaning towards signing a long-term contract with another team during the free agency period this summer.
The 6’10” big man has spent the past three seasons playing for the Celtics after spending nearly a decade with the Atlanta Hawks. Horford is a decorated player, having been named to five All-Star teams with a career 14.1 PPG, 8.2 RPG statline.
He was a key part of the Celtics teams that qualified for the playoffs in each of the past three seasons.
Now, Boston and GM Danny Ainge will do its best to keep Horford around on a new contract. However, it seems as if the 33-year-old’s mind might already be made up that he’d like to go elsewhere.
Horford will be free to sign with any team he likes when free agency officially begins on Monday, June 30.
