]]>Okafor joined Chiefs as a free agent in 2019, signing a three-year, $18 million contract with the franchise. Under these new terms, however, the 29-year-old player will become a free agent in 2021.
The restructure also sees Okafor’s max salary for 2020 clocking at $4.96 million, including $860K in per-game roster bonuses and $2 million in incentives.
This represents the third successful contract rework that Chiefs managed to pull off this offseason. The team first converted $5 million of DE Frank Clark’s base salary into a signing bonus while later managing to convince wideout Sammy Watkins to take a pay cut.
Alex Okafor comes off a troubling season with Kansas City in which he was limited to just 10 games, finishing the year with 22 tackles and 5.0 sacks. Okafor previously played with Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints. He has 176 career tackles and 27.0 career sacks since entering the league as a fourth-round pick in 2013.
