Dallas Cowboys’ Pro Bowler Amari Cooper inked a five-year, $100 million extension with the organization back in March, becoming one of football’s best-paid wide receivers. However, it turns out that Cooper could have got even more money if he was willing to leave Dallas.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Cooper said he re-signed with Cowboys because he loves the culture and atmosphere around the franchise.

“I just like everything about being a Dallas Cowboy,” said Cooper. “I love the culture we’ve created here, and just the atmosphere both in the building and outside of the building in terms of being in the city of Dallas and the surrounding areas.”

According to Cooper, he even rejected more lucrative offers in favor of staying in Dallas.

“I guess that would be the same reasons why I was willing to take less money to stay here,” he added. “That coupled with the fact I had the privilege of playing on a different team, I understand every culture isn’t the same, every city isn’t the same, and every team isn’t the same. Me being able to see that while being on another team and having the opportunity to be on a team I really love, I wouldn’t trade that for a little bit more money.”

Several teams made a move for Amari Cooper when he hit the free agency in early March. The most persistent was Washington, who made him a “substantial offer” and reportedly were even prepared to make him the highest-paid wideout in the history of the league.

Still, it is safe to say that Cooper made a good move to stay in Dallas. Besides having the opportunity to play for a stable and better-organized franchise, he also has an experienced quarterback to throw him the ball and more capable supporting cast.

Cooper is coming off a prolific season in 2019, catching 79 receptions for career-high 1,189 yards and eight touchdowns. This earned him a Pro Bowl appearance, his career fourth and second consecutive.

Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper is in the middle of another productive season with Dallas Cowboys which saw him reaffirming his status as one of NFL’s best at his position. Despite this, there is a lot of speculation about his future with the organization as he is currently in the final year of his deal.

Cowboys and Cooper have been negotiating a contract extension in the past several months, but the two sides failed to come close to an agreement until now. However, the 25-year-old doesn’t seem concerned about the situation and is convinced he will remain in Dallas for years to come.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Cooper told reporters on Monday when asked about his future. “Of course. Like I just said, I love it here. I want to be here. I just love this situation, my teammates. I just feel it’s the place for me.”

Reportedly, Amari Cooper has been asking to become one of the most paid WRs in football, something Dallas Cowboys were reluctant to give him in the past. Cowboys already committed big money to defensive end Demarcus Lawrence and running back Ezekiel Elliott earlier this season, and will probably have to give a massive extension to quarterback Dak Prescott soon. This makes it problematic for the team to pay Cooper as much as he is asking without sacrificing their depth in a big way.

On Cooper’s side, he has done everything to show he deserves a large contract. After a Pro Bowl season in 2018, he is on top of his game this year as well, having 64 receptions for 971 yards and seven touchdowns.

According to reports around the league, if he really wants to stay in Dallas, Cooper would have to give the team a discount. It now remains to be seen whether the player will choose to stay where he feels comfortable for less money, or go for the big bucks on the open market.

Dallas Cowboys recently confirmed that they “kicked off” contract negotiations with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper, who both have one year left on their respective rookie deals. And while negotiations with Prescott seem to advance well, it seems like Dallas’ talks with Cooper are not so fruitful.

Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill Jr. reports that contract negotiations between Cowboys and Cooper are proving to be surprisingly difficult and are “at a stalemate, stuck in neutral and going nowhere” according to sources close to the club. Hill previously stated that the 24-year-old Pro Bowler made “shockingly high” demands to kick off the talks.

Amari Cooper is currently entering the fifth year of his rookie extension that will pay him $13.9 million in 2019. While we still don’t know the number Cooper is asking from Cowboys, we know that it is definitely higher than $16 million; the amount Dallas is willing to offer. For comparison, Cleveland Browns’ Odell Beckham Jr. makes $18 million while Oakland Raiders’ Antonio Brown nets $17 million annually.

It is clear to see why Cowboys are hesitant to put Amari Cooper in Beckham’s and Brown’s company. While Cooper showed flashes of amazing talent during his four years in the league, he also struggled with consistency and is not considered one of the best WRs in the game.

Copper joined Dallas back in October from the Raiders and ended up playing nine regular season games in 2018 with the Cowboys. He ended the year with 53 receptions for 725 yards and six touchdowns while also adding 13 receptions for 171 yards and one touchdown in the playoffs.

Dallas Cowboys are on a spending spree this summer. After handing out a new contract to defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence in March, Cowboys said that they intend to do the same with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper. The time for that has obviously come since team’s executive vice president Stephen Jones told reporters on Wednesday that contract talks with Prescott and Cooper are “off and running.”

While Cowboys are not hiding their will to pay Prescott and Cooper big money, the team’s goal according to Jones is to convince the duo to take a bit less than the max in order to keep a competitive team.

“As I told DeMarcus Lawrence, and I’ll tell all three of these guys: I’d love for you to max out and give you exactly what you want, because y’all have worked hard and you deserve to have a big contract. But if we want to put together the type of team we want to have with the Cowboys …” – Jones told reporters on Wednesday.

“That’s not their job.” – he added. “It’s not their job to manage the cap; I understand that. But it is my job and [owner Jerry Jones’] job, so they will understand why we’re negotiating hard to make the very best deal we can. Because the money, if we can talk them into not maxing out — doing well, but not maxed — then that allows us to have other good football players around them.”

Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper both have deals that run out after 2019, and are believed to be looking top money for their position. For Prescott, that would be in the range of $30 million per year, which would make him among the top five highest paid QBs in the league. Cooper, on the other hands, is believed to be demanding $16 million to $18 million.
