]]>The contract runs through the 2024-25 season and gives Davis an early termination option after the fourth year.
Davis’ agent Rich Paul confirmed the agreement in a chat with ESPN, adding that his client is expected to ink the contract in the following days.
Davis, who joined the Lakers last offseason in a blockbuster trade from the New Orleans Pelicans, reportedly didn’t even consider going elsewhere despite being an unrestricted free agent this summer. The only unknown revolved around the type of contract he will sign.
In recent weeks, the 27-year-old considered various scenarios that included both short-term and long-term commitments to the Lakers. In the end, he decided to play it safe and take the max offer.
In his first season with the Lakers, Davis helped the franchise win its first NBA Title since 2010 while playing some of his best basketball. During the regular season, Davis averaged 26.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game while earning First-Team All-NBA and All-Star nods and finishing runner-up in NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Davis’ production went up in the postseason, scoring 27.7 points per game while adding 9.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
Locking Davis long-term comes just days after the Lakers also signed superstar LeBron James to a new contract. With the two on board, the franchise reassured basketball fans that they’ll remain in the title conversation for years to come.

]]>Davis was in Chicago on Tuesday for the Lakers’ game against the Bulls, and used the opportunity to spend some time with the basketball teams of his alma mater Perspectives Charter School. During the Q&A segment, one athlete decided to ask the 26-year-old All-Star whether he would consider playing for the Bulls if he had a chance for that.
“Honestly, it’s nothing like playing at home,” Davis responded. “I don’t know. … I mean, I am a free agent next year, but we’ll see. It’s a possibility.”
While Anthony Davis most likely just wanted to please the home crowd, the fact is that the Chicago Bulls have a talented young team that is on the rise. If Lakers don’t fulfill Davis’ NBA title hopes soon and Bulls keep on getting better, nothing guarantees that he won’t get homesick in the future.
Davis also added that he considers Chicago to be the Mecca of basketball given all the success the city had in the past and the talent that it produced.
“I mean, it is. We’ve got the best basketball players ever,” he explained. “You look at the history with all the guys we’ve got that made the league and even the guys that didn’t make the league. They say New York, but it’s not even close.”
Davis is currently having a great start of the season with the Lakers, averaging 28.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3.0 blocks per game.

]]>However, James’ decision to give Davis No.23 didn’t sit well with Nike, who is the NBA’s jersey manufacturer. According to the company, they already made a substantial number of Lakers’ No.23 jerseys with James’ name on it and pulling them back would cause them “tens of millions” in losses. This forced the Lakers to postpone the switch for the next season and Davis to take No. 3.
Anthony Davis announced the decision to wear No.3 with his new team on Instagram over the weekend, saying that it was the number he wore in elementary.
Davis followed this up with a photo with his elementary basketball team that shows him wearing the number.
Davis joined the Lakers in a blockbuster trade which sent Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and three first-round draft picks to New Orleans Pelicans. This was the result of the 26-year-old All-Star’s trade request he filed back in February.

]]>After Pelicans landed the No.1 overall pick in 2019 NBA Draft, the team’s newly-hired executive vice president David Griffin hoped Anthony Davis would be willing to consider staying in New Orleans. Still, during a recent meeting with the All-Star center and his agent Rich Paul, Griffin was told that Davis won’t change his stance and still wants to be traded.
While there are several teams interested in acquiring Davis, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Los Angeles Lakers are believed to be in the best position to get the player. All three teams are able to offer attractive packages that involve high-value draft picks and young players, which is something Pelicans would aim for their team in the aftermath of Davis’ exit.
The thing that complicates Pelicans’ position in these trade talks is that Davis, who was one-year left on his contract, said that he would only consider re-signing with the Knicks, Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers. This effectively puts other teams at a big risk of forfeiting valuable assets without knowing whether Davis will only be a one-year rental.

Griffin isn’t the only one who thinks Davis might have a change of hearts as Pelicans’ owner Gayle Benson also expressed optimism about the situation involving their best player.
“We certainly don’t want somebody here whose heart isn’t in it, but hopefully Anthony will have a change of heart, and if he does, we’ll welcome him back with open arms,” – said Benson. “We’d like for him to stay if everybody agrees to it.”
Anthony Davis, who is eligible to become a free agent in the summer of 2020 informed New Orleans Pelicans on January 28 that he won’t sign an extension with the team and that he wants to be traded. Although Los Angeles Lakers made a strong push for Davis, Pelicans decided to keep the player until the summer hoping to get some better offers.
Davis averaged 25.9 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 2.4 games in the regular season as the Pelicans finished on the 13th spot in the Western Conference.
