]]>The 25-year-old was able to retain her number one ranking by picking up five titles this season, including the coveted Wimbledon women’s singles title. This means that the Australian has managed to end the season as the number one women’s singles player for the third season running.
With the WTA Finals being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Barty won the 2019 edition of the tournament, raking in $6.4 million in prize money, the largest check in tennis history.
The main reason behind Barty’s decision to end her season prematurely seems to be the current quarantine requirements in Australia, Reportedly, the player is wanting to avoid spending a second two-week period in quarantine in a two-month period upon return to her home country.

]]>According to Barty, she made the decision due to coronavirus pandemic concerns and the fact that she wouldn’t have the proper preparation ahead of the tournament. The 24-year-old Australian, who dropped out of the 2020 US Open for similar reasons, also confirmed that she wouldn’t play tennis in Europe at all in 2020.
“It has been a difficult decision to make, but unfortunately, I will not be competing in Europe this year,” Barty wrote on Instagram. “Last year’s French Open was the most special tournament of my career, so this is not a decision I have made lightly.”
Barty won the 2019 French Open in a remarkable fashion, dropping just two sets en route to finals as the eighth seed. In the final match, she lost just four games and defeated Marketu Vondrousovu to claim her first Grand Slam title.
The win at Roland Garros stands as Ashleigh Barty’s biggest career success, while she also reached semi-finals at the Australian Open this year. At Wimbledon and US Open, Barty never advanced past the fourth round.

]]>“My team and I have decided that we won’t be travelling to the US for the Western and Southern Open and the US Open this year,” Barty explained.
“I love both events so it was a difficult decision but there are still significant risks involved due to COVID-19 and I don’t feel comfortable putting my team and I in that position. I wish the USTA all the best for the tournaments and look forward to being back in the US next year.”
She also confirmed that she will be contemplating over her participation in the French Open and the other WTA European tournaments within the next few weeks.
If Barty decides to participate in this year’s French Open, she will be given the chance to defend the title she won last year. The Australian won the 2019 Roland Garros title after defeating the likes of Madison Keyes and Andrea Petkovic en route to the final.

]]>One of those stories will definitely be about Australian Ashleigh Barty’s miraculous comeback to the sport. The 23-year-old surprised everyone in 2014 when she decided to take a break from tennis to play professional cricket. She eventually returned to tennis after 17 months in early 2016 and has since won four tour titles, including the Miami Open in March, as well as the US Open women’s doubles title last year. And now she’s the first Australian to win the singles title in Roland Garros since Margaret Court’s victory in 1973.
This is also the first time that the Australian won a Grand Slam singles title, which makes her comeback even more miraculous. After the match she said that the French Open was a special place for Australian players and that she is incredibly proud of what she has been able to achieve, adding that she almost played the perfect match.
