Atlanta United’s squad for the 2023 season won’t include the best players in the franchise’s history. According to The Athletic, the MLS side decided to part ways with the forward Josef Martinez after this season.

Reportedly, Martinez recently met with United’s technical director Carlos Bocanegra, who informed the 29-year-old player that his time with the club has come to an end. However, it is unclear how will the split between the two sides look like.

Martinez has a DP contract that runs through 2023 and guarantees him a $3.75 million base salary. Atlanta will either have to work out a mutual termination agreement with the player or trade him. The latter might be quite complicated, considering the Venezuelan has a no-trade clause.

Atlanta United signed Josef Martinez on a loan deal ahead of their inaugural MLS season in 2017, and the move proved to be an exceptional piece of business. Martinez scored five goals in his first three games in MLS, prompting Atlanta to lock him into a DP deal right away.

Martinez would go on to score 88 goals in his first three seasons with the club while being named MLS MVP in 2018. He also helped Atlanta win MLS Cup in the same year and Campeones Cup the following season.

Martínez’s prolific run came to a halt in the first game of the 2020 season when he suffered a torn ACL that ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign. After returning from injury, he never managed to rediscover his old form, and this is probably why Atlanta wants to move on from him at this point.

The Atlanta United have lost patience with head coach Gabriel Heinze, recently deciding to fire the Argentinian just 17 games into his tenure. The decision was made after a 0-1 loss to New England over the weekend, which extended Atlanta’s winless streak to eight games.

Assistant Rob Valentino, who has been with the organization since 2018, will take over as interim head coach until the team finds a permanent solution for the position.

According to an official statement made by Atlanta United President Darren Eales, poor results on the field were not the only reason why the team parted ways with Heinze. A number of “issues relating to the day-to-day leadership” have also led to the decision.

“This was certainly not a decision we wanted to make at this point in our season, but it was the right one for the club,” said Eales. “Gabi is a talented coach and is undeniably passionate about his craft and the sport of soccer. We are grateful to him for his service; and wish him all the best in the future.”

Multiple reports indicate that Gabriel Heinze’s downfall started a lot earlier. He had a hard time convincing players to buy into his playing style from the get-go, and many of them were unhappy with his training methods and tactical demands. His clash with star striker Josef Martinez, whom he froze out from the first team, also didn’t help.

Heinze was hired by Atlanta back in December, arriving at the club after a successful tenure with Velez Sarsfield. During his seven months at the helm, he compiled a 4-5-8 record in all competitions, including a 2-4-7 record in MLS, which has United sitting 10th in the East.

Mexican forward Erick “Cubo” Torres will return to Atlanta United for the 2021 MLS season after signing a new contract with the club. Atlanta confirmed the news on Wednesday via social media.

According to the announcement, Torres’ new deal will see him taking on more responsibilities this year. Besides playing on game days, the 28-year-old player will also have a role with the club’s academy, where he is expected to assist the coaching staff and help younger players.

In 2021, Torres will occupy a supplemental roster spot and won’t count against Atlanta’s salary budget.

“Cubo has been a positive influence on our organization, and we’re pleased he has chosen to re-sign with the club,” said Atlanta vice president Carlos Bocanegra. “While he provides competition to our group of forwards, he’s a veteran presence who understands the league and has shown a willingness to mentor our younger players.”

Erick “Cubo” Torres joined Atlanta United as a free agent back in July, serving as a fill-in for injured Josef Martinez. He ended up playing 13 games, providing one goal and one assist.

Torres spent most of his career playing in native Mexico, where he suited up for Guadalajara, UNAM, and Tijuana. He also has experience in the MLS, having played for Chivas USA and the Houston Dynamo in the past.

Following the departure of Ronald Koeman to FC Barcelona, former Atlanta United manager Frank de Boer has been named as the new coach for the Netherlands’ national soccer team.

While the two-year contract will lapse just before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, De Boer’s agreement could be extended depending on how well his Dutch side performs at the UEFA European Championship next summer.

With De Boer scheduled to be officially unveiled as the new Dutch coach at the end of this week or early next week, he is later expected to announce his squad selection for the international friendly against Mexico and the UEFA Nations League matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy.

it is believed that De Boer was one of three shortlisted candidates for the managerial role—the others being Frank Rijkaard and Peter Bosz. While Rijkaard stated that he does not wish to return to football, Bosz has decided to respect his contract with Bayer Leverkusen.

This role will mark De Boer’s return to action after he left Atlanta United by way of a mutual agreement two months ago. He performed admirably during his first season at the club in 2019, earning them a spot in the Eastern Conference playoff. His second season did not go as smoothly, however, with Atlanta coming last in their MLS is Back tournament group.

Wednesday proved to be an eventful day in North American soccer, with 10 MLS teams facing off in the latest round of action.

Among those were Western Conference title contenders Minnesota United FC, who played against the 9th placed FC Dallas. Despite going a man down in the 82nd minute due to Romain Metarine’s red card, Minnesota held on for a 3-2 victory. These three points helped them soar above Sporting Kansas City into the Western Conference top spot.

Shifting focus to the Eastern Conference and former leaders Toronto FC defeated rivals Montreal Impact 2-1. This result allowed Toronto to narrow the deficit between them and conference leaders Columbus Crew to just two points.

In what was the shock of the evening, Real Salt Lake defeated close rival LAFC by an unexpected scoreline of 3-0. While LAFC dominated possession and managed to take one shot more than the victors, it was Salt Lake who were able to take advantage of their many opportunities on goal.

Moving back to the east coast and MLS newcomers Inter Miami managed to secure their second victory of the season—a 2-1 win over eight-placed Atlanta United. This sees Inter Miami finally move out from the foot of the table.

Finally, we stop off at DSG Park, where Colorado Rapids were held to a 1-1 draw by the visiting Houston Dynamo. Colorado remain in 10th place in the Western Conference, while Houston are in sixth.

Atlanta United added some fire power after a disappointing MLS is Back Tournament campaign. The club announced on Friday that they have signed former Mexico international Erick “Cubo” Torres to a one-year deal.

Torres is expected to fill in for star striker Josef Martinez, who will now officially be out for the season after being placed on the season-ending injured list. Martinez tore his ACL in the season opener against Nashville in March.

Atlanta acquired Torres from the free-agent market, as the 27-year-old player recently ended his stint with Liga MX side Club Tijuana.

“‘Cubo’ is a natural goal-scoring forward who will bolster our frontline, and we’re pleased to add a player of his quality to the team,” – said club’s VP and technical director Carlos Bocanegra. “He has consistently shown his finishing abilities in MLS, Liga MX, and on the international stage, and we expect him to immediately contribute to the second half of our season.”

This will be the third stint in the United States for Cubo Torres, as he previously played with now-defunct Chivas USA and Houston Dynamo. During that period, Torres played 93 games in MLS and scored 36 goals.

Torres also made seven appearances for Mexico’s international side since 2017, scoring one goal in the process.

Atlanta United won the MLS Cup in only their second season since the club was opened with a 2-0 victory over Portland Timbers on Saturday.

This year’s MLS Most Valuable Player of the Year Josef Martinez opened the scoresheet in the 39th minute while teammate Franco Escobar scored the second goal after the break. Surprisingly, Atlanta played their first game in March 2017, and this competition was only their second.

Saturday was also a special night for manager Gerardo Martino as it was his final game before heading to Mexico to become the national team’s head coach.

“We won it, it feels good,” Martino said. “If I had to choose a way to leave somewhere, this is the best way.”

Portland were guests in front of 73,000 fans at the Mercedes Benz Stadium and held their nerves for the better part of the game. While Atlanta made several attempts to snatch an early goal, the Timbers tightened their defense, thwarting every attack made against them.

Slowly but certainly, Martinez scored his 35th goal of the season and the game’s winner to the celebration of the jam-packed arena. Portland had a chance to equalize moments before halftime but striker Jeremy Ebobisse made a weak shot that was easily saved by United’ keeper.

Atlanta’s win was the first major trophy win for the city’s sports teams since the Braves won the World Series in 1995.

Atlanta United announced on Tuesday that their head coach, Gerardo Martino, will leave the club after the 2018 season, after deciding not to renew his contract. This comes after Martino was linked with several other jobs, including managing Mexico and Argentina’s national teams.

“We are very grateful to Tata for his commitment to Atlanta United and for all he has done to help build our club during our first two years in the league,” – said Atlanta United president Darren Eales. “True to his reputation, he has been an incredible leader and has set us up for great success moving forward.”

ESPN reported last week that Gerardo Martino already made a verbal agreement with Mexican Football Federation to take over the country’s national team. The 55-year-old, however, refused to speak about his future, insisting that he wants to finish the job with Atlanta United this season. Atlanta United have one more game left to play in 2018 MLS season, currently sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference.

“This was not an easy decision to make, I have enjoyed my time with Atlanta United very much and am proud of what we have accomplished together in such a short time,” – said Martino in a statement. “The decision was not made for financial reasons, negotiations with the front office were transparent and fair. It was simply the right move for me and my family at this time. The opportunity to build a team from the start does not come along often, and I am grateful to the club and to the fans for putting their trust in me to establish a solid foundation here in Atlanta. What is most important now is that the focus remains on our goals for this season.”
