Manchester United’s search for a new manager has reportedly led them to former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde. According to multiple reports, the club’s brass had talks with Valverde on Tuesday to see whether he would be willing to take the position on an interim basis.

The Premier League side has cast a wide net in efforts to identify the best replacement for the fired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. So far, most of the process is focused on finding someone to take the club through the rest of the season before embarking on a search for a permanent solution in the summer.

Several other names have also been linked with the interim manager job at Man Utd besides Valverde. The club already contacted former RB Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick, but the German is believed to be content with his role as Head of Sports Development with Lokomotiv Moscow. Ex-Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre is also in contention.

It is believed that Manchester United would like to make Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino their long-term manager. However, the issue is that Pochettino only recently agreed to a new deal with PSG and that the Ligue 1 club isn’t keen on letting him go mid-season. United hopes their stance might soften in the summer, and they are willing to wait to get their man.

Man Utd parted ways with Solskjaer over the weekend after an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Watford. The club legend and current assistant Michael Carrick is serving as a caretaker at the moment.

Barcelona finally made the move that everyone in the soccer world was expecting for some time. The club confirmed on Monday that they have fired their manager Ernesto Valverde, naming former Real Betis’ boss Quique Setien as his replacement.

Despite Barca sitting at the top of La Liga and advancing to the Champions League knockout stage, Valverde was on the hot seat for some time now. The team struggled in some key games lately, failing to win against lesser opponents like Espanyol, which allowed their biggest rivals Real Madrid to return in the race for La Liga title. Barcelona also suffered a defeat in Super Cup against Atletico Madrid despite having a lead, which presumably sealed Valverde’s fate.

According to reports from European media outlets, Barca’s first choice for Valverde’s successor was club legend Xavi, who is currently the manager of Al Sadd SC. But after Xavi rejected the opportunity to take over the club mid-season, the front office turned to Setien, who was a candidate for the position on some earlier occasions.

Setien spent the majority of his career coaching in native Spain, where he led teams like Racing Santander, Lugo, and Las Palmas. His biggest success came with Real Betis, leading the team to a sixth-place finish in 2017/18 La Liga season.

Ernesto Valverde leaves Barcelona after two and a half seasons with the club. During that time, he won four trophies, including two La Liga titles. Valverde previously coached Olympiacos, Valencia, and Athletic Bilbao, among other clubs.
