]]>Despite allowing him to engage with the Giants, the Padres insisted earlier in the month that it was their will to keep him and general manager A.J. Preller in San Diego. This comes despite the team finishing 82-80 last season with a third-place finish in the National League West.
Melvin coached the Padres for two seasons, reaching the 2022 NL Championship Series before slipping this past season. Last season’s performance was disappointing given the Padres’ $258 million payroll; the third-highest in the league.

]]>While the A’s were eliminated in the playoffs and the Red Sox won the World Series, Melvin was the favorite to win. He opened the 2017/18 season with the lowest payroll among all MLB managers. His squad wasn’t the strongest but was able to spearhead them to the playoffs and win nearly 100 games.
At the event held on Tuesday, Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker won the manager of the Year Awards in the National League, beating Milwaukee’s Craig Counsell and Colorado’s Bud Black. As it has become a norm, the honors in recent years have gone to the most surprising managers. The A’s may not have won any trophies in the season but they caught the league unawares with their great performance.
Snitker’s win was also unexpected. He was named the Braves’ interim manager at the beginning of the season but managed the team with long-term goals. The 63-year-old led Atlanta to 90 wins and won the NL East title.
The Cy Young Award and the MVP honors will be announced later in the year.
