Right-hander Lucas Giolito will join the Boston Red Sox on a two-year deal, sources confirmed to ESPN. The veteran’s $38.5 million contract could be pushed up to $40.5 million through innings-based performance bonuses.

The deal will see Giolito earn $18 million in his first season with the Red Sox and a $19 million salary in 2025. The contract also includes a $1 million buyout should he choose to opt out. There is also a $14 million club option for 2026 on condition that he throws under 140 innings in 2025, along with a $19 million mutual option if he throws over 140 innings that year, with a $1.5 million buyout.

At 29 years of age, Giolito enjoyed an illustrious albeit disruptive season in 2023, hitting a career-high 184⅓ innings. He started the year batting for the Chicago White Sox before spending stints with the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians. Over the past three seasons, Golito emerged as one of the best starters in baseball, posting ERAs of 3.41, 3.48, and 3.53.

The Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta continues to thrive in his role as a relief pitcher. Pivetta delivered a stellar performance in Monday’s 7-0 win against the Oakland Athletics and managed to write his name in the history books in the process.

Pivetta made 87 pitches across six innings, not allowing a single hit and striking out 13 batters, the most by a reliever in Red Sox’s history. Also, 13 strikeouts without a single hit was the most by a relief pitcher in MLB history since the mound was set at its current distance in 1893.

“I just go out there, and I execute what I need to execute,” Pivetta said after the game. “Just get ahead of guys, compete in the zone, use my stuff in the zone and then expand the zone after that.”

Red Sox re-signed Pivetta to a one-year deal in January and made him part of their rotation to start the season. However, after struggling in eight starts, during which he had a 6.30 ERA, the 30-year-old player was moved to the bullpen.

Spending some time in the bullpen benefited the Red Sox and allowed Pivetta to regain his groove. However, don’t expect the veteran to remain there for much longer.

“We were joking on the bench … maybe he feels now that he should become a starter. It’s the other way around: the better he pitches, this is a structure we need,” Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora told the reporters after the A’s game. “No, no. But like I said, at one point, probably, he needs to start.”

The Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story is set to miss the majority of the rest of the season, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom confirmed on Tuesday.

Story underwent an internal bracing procedure on his right ulnar collateral ligament. While still an involved procedure, Story’s operation still demands less recovery time than Tommy John surgery, which often involves a year of recovery.

Despite the seriousness of Story’s procedure, Bloom does not rule out the possibility of Story returning at some point late on in the season. “I certainly would not rule out a return sometime during 2023,” Bloom confirmed.

As divulged by Bloom, Story began to experience pain in his right elbow just before Christmas while practicing in an effort to remain in shape for the season. While the exact timeline for Story’s rehabilitation is difficult to predict given the nature of this procedure, a previously suggested timeline of four to six months has been labeled as “optimistic”.

Enrique Hernandez has been listed as a potential replacement for Story, while left-hander Chris Sale is also available.

Rafael Devers is set to sign an 11-Year, $331 million contract extension with the Boston Red Sox, sources confirmed on Wednesday. This contract is due to be the longest and largest guarantee ever given in the history of the Red Sox.

Devers’ extension is set to start in 2023 and will be through the 2033 season. Following the signing of this deal, the third baseman’s previous one-year, $17.5 million contract signed earlier in the week will be superseded.

The third baseman began his career with the Red Sox in 2017 when at 20 years old he impressed Boston’s scouts with his left-hand swing. He has since become a crucial member of Boston’s rotation, hitting .295/.358/.521 in 2022 with 27 home runs, 88 RBIs, and a career-best OPS+ of 141.

Other highlights over Devers’ career include leading the MLB in 2019 with 359 total bases at just 22 years of age. He also proved consistent over 2021, hitting 38 home runs.

Devers’ arrival in Boston is a welcome sight for the Red Sox, who bid farewell to an array of players including longtime shortstop Xander Bogaerts and star right fielder Mookie Betts.

Third baseman Justin Turner has agreed to a $22 million, two-year deal with the Boston Red Sox, sources close to the matters confirmed on Sunday. This comes after the player spent the past nine seasons at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

During his time in Los Angeles, Turner developed a reputation as one of the National League’s most productive hitters. While past his prime, the 38-year-old player proved that he is still a strong performer, as he batted .278/.350/.438 with 13 home runs and 81 RBIs in 128 games last season.

Since arriving at the Dodgers, Turner re-signed with the team on two separate occasions. The first came in 2016 when he closed a four-year, $64 million deal as a free agent. Before the 2021 season, Turner inked a two-year, $32 million contract with a club option for 2023.

Instead of paying an additional $16 million to cover Turner’s salary this season, the Dodgers instead chose to fork out $2 million to buy out his contract.

Turner will join a team that is desperately looking to improve its fortunes after finding itself at the foot of the American League East division last year.

The Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale will sit out the remainder of the 2022 MLB season after undergoing wrist surgery on Monday. According to Red Sox, Sale fractured his wrist after being involved in a bike accident last week.

According to The Athletic, the accident happened when Sale took his bike and went to get lunch in a food joint near his home. At one point, the 33-year-old player hit something while going down the hill and fell off his bike. He finished banged up and with a broken wrist.

The injuries have been a recurring story for Sale in recent years. He was limited to just two starts this season after undergoing surgery on his pinky. This was preceded by a Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2020 and the better part of 2021.

“We need to dispatch some people to go find whoever has the Chris Sale voodoo doll and recover it,” said Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom. “… It’s really unfortunate. We’re relieved this wasn’t worse. Obviously, it was a pretty rough spill, and very glad this wasn’t worse. It’s been such a run of bad luck for him and obviously for us.”

Chris Sale, who also played for the Chicago White Sox earlier in his career, has been a seven-time All-Star and two-time AL strikeout leader. Sale started Game 1 in the 2018 World Series for the Red Sox and helped the team win its ninth franchise championship.

Jackie Bradley Jr. didn’t manage to last for a full season in his second spell with the Boston Red Sox. The veteran outfielder was released by the Red Sox on Thursday and is now a free agent.

The Red Sox announced the news via social media with a tribute vid dedicated to Bradley.

Bradley spent his first eight seasons in the majors with the Red Sox, earning one All-Star honor and one Golden Glove award during that span. He was also one of the key players in the franchise’s road to a World Series win in 2018, having been named the ALCS MVP.

After the 2020 MLB season wrapped up, Bradley decided to opt out of his contract and hit the free agency. With the Red Sox unwilling to spend much to keep him, he elected to join the Milwaukee Brewers on a two-year, $24 million deal.

Bradley’s first year in Milwaukee turned out to be a disappointing affair as he hit career-worst .163 with six homers and 29 RBIs. The Brewers were quick to ship him back to Boston as part of an offseason trade that landed them outfielder Hunter Renfroe.

While many believed Bradley would rediscover his form in familiar surroundings, that wasn’t the case.

In 92 games he played before being released, the 32-year-old had a .210 batting average with three homers and 29 RBIs.

The seven-time All-Star lefty Chris Sale is so eager to return to the field from the injured list that he isn’t even picky about his role. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Sale said that he would “for sure” be willing to be a reliever if the team sees it fit.

Sale is yet to play a game in 2022 as he deals with a right rib stress fracture he suffered in February. He started the season on the 60-day injured list and is slowly making his way back. The veteran already had one live session this week and is in line for another one. After that, he is expected to throw in the minors before returning to MLB action next month.

However, the Red Sox have been reportedly discussing a scenario in which they use Sale out of the bullpen. This would fast-track his return to the majors, and it appears that the 33-year-old wouldn’t mind this development.

“Nothing really matters other than getting back out there,” Sale, who has 241 career starts in MLB, said. “Hand me the ball, I’ll throw it until you take it. That’s where I’m at.”

Chris Sale didn’t play at all in 2020, undergoing a Tommy John surgery. He also missed the most of 2021 before making a successful return and starting nine games. Sale wrapped up the regular-season campaign with a 5–1 record while posting 3.16 ERA and 52 strikeouts.

The Boston Red Sox beat the Houston Astros in a dominant fashion on Monday night to turn around the AL Championship Series. The 12-3 win that gave Boston a 2-1 lead in the series also included some history as they became the first team to hit three grand slams in a single postseason series in MLB history.

After a scoreless first inning, Christian Vazquez singled to the right at the bottom of the second to give the Red Sox 1-0 lead. Christian Arroyo then grounded into the fielder’s choice on the second to make it 2-0.

This set up a 430 feet homer for Kyle Schwarber, which allowed Arroyo, J.D. Martinez, and Alex Verdugo to score and lift Boston to 6-0.

The Red Sox continued to fill out the scoreboard at the bottom of the third. They increased their lead to 9-0 after Vazquez singled and Arroyo hit another homer.

The Astros cut into the lead with a 413 feet home run by Kyle Tucker at the top of the fourth, but this only prompted Boston to respond with more homers of their own. Martinez had a 395-foot home run at the bottom of the sixth, and Devers added 372 homer at the bottom of the eighth.

“These are the moments that you are never going to forget as a player,” Schwarber said after the game. “This is what we live for. We live to be in the postseason. When you get that first taste, that first experience, you want to keep coming. You want more. It’s an addicting feeling, and especially where it’s just rocking the whole time, and it’s rowdy.”

The Boston Red Sox keep on treating their fans with more excitement than they hoped for. Despite being projected to struggle in 2021, the Red Sox not only made it to the postseason but have now also beaten the New York Yankees in the AL wild-card game to advance to AL Divisional Series.

It wasn’t a secret that the Yankees hoped to match up with the Red Sox in the wild-card game, believing that would set them on an easier path for a deep playoff run. However, Boston came out swinging and easily sent the Yanks packing thanks to great performances by ace Nathan Eovaldi, shortstop Xander Bogaerts, and outfielder Kyle Schwarber.

Eovaldi picked up the win for the night by striking out eight and posting a 1.69 ERA while also allowing just two hits in the first five innings.

Bogaerts hit a 427 feet home run in the first inning to give the Red Sox a 2-0. Then Schwarber added a 435 homer in the third inning to increase the lead to 3-0.

It was all Boston until the sixth inning when Anthony Rizzo homered to make it 1-3 for the Yankees. Still, the New York team failed to build from there and fell down 1-6 by the seventh inning. Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run in the ninth to make it 2-6.

The Red Sox will now face last year’s AL champions, the Tampa Bay Rays, in ALDS, which starts on Thursday.

“Now, we go to the next one, and we’ve just got to be ready to face a great baseball team,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora after the game against the Yankees. “Coming into the season, everybody talked about them being the best team in the big leagues, and we have a huge challenge. But we’re ready for it.”
