The Buffalo Sabres are focused on locking their young stars Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power to new long-term contracts. This was confirmed by Sabres’ general manager Kevyn Adams in a chat with reporters on Wednesday.

According to Adams, he met with agents of Dahlin and Power earlier this month and intends to sign both players to an extension sooner than later. Dahlin is set to enter the final year of his three-year, $18 million deal, while Power has one year left of his entry-level contract.

“We’ve made it clear to them we see them as really important people and pieces of our franchise moving forward, and they’ve made it clear to us they want to be here, so we’ll keep working on it,” Adams said. “But I’m excited about those guys.”

Rasmus Dahlin was the Sabres’ first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and is already proven himself worthy of the selection. Dahlin received two All-Star nods in the past two years and has 233 points in 355 NHL games.

Owen Power, on the other hand, is coming off an impressive first full season with Buffalo. He had four goals and 31 assists in 79 games while being a finalist for the NHL’s Rookie of the Year award.

The Buffalo Sabres’ young locker room will have the veteran leadership of captain Kyle Okposo next season as well. The franchise announced on Thursday that Okposo signed a one-year contract to play in Buffalo in 2023-24.

Okposo was set to hit the free market after playing out his original seven-year, $42 million contract expired. His new deal comes with a salary of $2.5 million, according to the Sabres.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Okposo said that his plan always was to forgo free agency and return to Buffalo.

“There is definitely some unfinished business, for sure,” Okposo said. “I’ve been through a lot here. … I just think we’re scratching the surface. I think that it’s pretty evident by what’s happened in the playoffs this year that we’re not very far from reaching the top of the mountain.

Okposo was one of the few veterans on the Sabres’ team that surprisingly finished the 2022-23 season with a 42-33-7 record despite fielding the youngest roster in the league. The 35-year-old played in 75 games, contributing with 11 goals and 17 assists for a total of 28 points.

Kyle Okposo made his debut in NHL with the New York Islanders and played nine seasons with the team before landing in Buffalo as a free agent.  Okposo, who was an All-Star in 2017, played 984 career NHL games and has 592 points.

The Buffalo Sabres signed goalie Devon Levi to a three-year entry-level contract on Friday. This move comes less than a week after Levi completed his junior season at Northeastern.

Levi’s arrival at the Sabres comes after the player won the Mike Richter Award as college hockey’s top goalie last season. This season, he once again finds himself as a finalist after producing a .923 save percentage; the highest at the college level nationwide. The 21-year-old also leads Hockey East with 4 wins, six shutouts, a 1.81 goals-against average, and a .947 save percentage.

With Levi in the mix, the Sabres will have a rotation of three goaltenders to choose from, including Eric Comrie and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, both of whom have a contract with the team through the end of next season.

Despite missing his freshman year due to injury, Levi finished his college career with a 38-22-6 record along with a 1.9 goals-against average and 16 shutouts.

After helping Canada to win the silver medal at the 2021 world junior championship, Levi was named the world junior championship tournament’s top goaltender.

The Buffalo Sabres have locked their talented defenseman Mattias Samuelsson on a new contract. According to the team’s official announcement, Samuelsson inked a seven-year deal that will keep him in Buffalo through the 2029-30 NHL season.

Samuelsson will get an average annual salary of $4,285 million and a total of $30 million over the course of the deal. He is entering the final year of his entry-level contract, which pays him $925K annually.

“I think it was easy because, I’ve said it before, I want to be a part of this for a long time,” Samuelsson said after signing the deal. “That feeling was always there from my side. When they expressed that they were interested in the long-term too, it wasn’t too long before something came together.”

By handing Samuelsson a new deal, the Sabres continued efforts to tie their young core to long terms contracts. The franchise previously also worked out a new deal with promising center Tage Thompson, who agreed to a seven-year, $50 million contract last month.

Mattias Samuelsson made his NHL debut with the Sabres during the 2020-21 NHL season, playing 12 games and getting two assists in his rookie campaign. Samuelsson didn’t play much in 2021-22 either, being limited to 42 games by injuries, but the Sabres obviously liked what they saw.

“If you think of a star player on the other team, he’s the antidote,” Sabres’ head coach Don Granato described Samuelsson. “He is an athletic beast.”

The Las Vegas Knights confirmed the signing of centre Jack Eichel on Thursday morning. In exchange for Eichel’s signature, Peyton Krebs, Alex Tuch, a future first-round draft pick, and a future second-rounder were traded to the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres are not liable for any further salary payouts, the team confirmed.

According to multiple sources, the Golden Knights managed to beat out the Calgary Flames in the race for Eichel. The Flames were also deep into talks with the Sabres over a potential trade.

Eichel began his NHL career with the Sabres, selected as the number two pick overall in the 2015 NHL Draft. While in the fourth year of an eight-year contract, Eichel’s relationship with the franchise deteriorated due to a disagreement over the best way to treat a herniated disk in his neck.

While the Sabres wanted Eichel to undergo fusion surgery, the player prefered the route of an artificial disk replacement. According to the NHL collective bargaining agreement, the team has the final say on how an injury is treated.

Vegas, on the other hand, was willing to permit Eichel to undergo his preferred surgery, which has never in history been performed on an active NHL player.

Star center Jack Eichel is inching closer to leaving the Buffalo Sabres, according to a recent report from Darren Dreger of TNS. Dreger reports that trade talks centered on Eichel have intensified recently and that he and the Sabres are optimistic about parting ways sooner than later.

Eichel requested to be traded away from Buffalo in the summer after clashing with the Sabres about how his neck injury should be treated. The organization wants Eichel to undergo more traditional fusion surgery, while the player and his representatives are pushing for artificial disk replacement surgery that was never done on an NHL player before.

The questions surrounding Eichel’s injury, potential surgery, and recovery initially kept other NHL teams at a distance and deterred them from engaging in serious trade talks with the Sabres. This was understandable considering that the 24-year-old would arrive with a $10 million cap hit in each of the next five seasons.

However, things changed in recent weeks after “ongoing discussions and additional access to Eichel’s medical file” helped teams with trade interest to “clearly see his situation,” according to Dreger.

The list of teams with interest in Eichel reportedly includes the Anaheim Ducks, the Calgary Flames, the Los Angeles Kings, and the New York Rangers.

Taylor Hall attended his first training camp practice with the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, marking the first occasion that he has taken to the ice in a Sabres jersey. The forward signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the team on October 11th.

Hall traveled to Buffalo on Christmas Day so that he would be able to get in a few early skating sessions before training camp officially began. In light of his new arrival, the Buffalo Sabres should greatly benefit from starting their training camp earlier than the majority of their competitors. The Sabres were one of seven teams that did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Qualifiers last season—and those that did will begin their training on Monday.

While becoming acclimated to his new team is a priority for Hall, the absence of captain Jack Eichel from Friday’s practice due to an upper-body injury has proven to be quite the setback. As a result, Hall was left to skate at left-wing while Victor Olofsson took the right and Casey Mittelstadt and Riley Sheahan switched at the center spot.

Despite the apparent setbacks, Hall’s performance has already made a strong impression on his teammates. Sabres coach Ralph Krueger explained: “His skill, his ability, his pace, you can feel it already and it gives our whole group confidence when you see somebody like Taylor. You know, he’s matured in a really nice way. He’s going to be a very important leader for us on and off the ice.”

Buffalo Sabres will get to keep another of their promising players from hitting the open market. After previously avoiding arbitration hearing with center Sam Reinhart and goalie Linus Ullmark, Sabres have now managed to do the same with All-Rookie forward Victor Olofsson.

The team confirmed on Thursday that they have locked Olofsson to a new two-year deal that comes with an average annual value of $3.05 million.

Olofsson warranted a new deal with an impressive outing in the 2019/20 NHL season in which he was selected in the NHL All-Rookie team and came up seventh in Rookie of the Year voting.

The 25-year-old player finished the campaign with 20 goals and 22 assists for a total of 42 points. This was the third-best total among all Sabres players even though he was limited to 54 games due to a lower-body injury.

This earned him praise from his teammates, with Sabres captain Jack Eichel saying Olofsson is “bound to have success”.

“I think his work ethic and his dedication to hockey is probably the thing that jumps out the most,” said Eichel.

The new deal is a big success for Victor Olofsson and a confirmation of his hard work. He had a long road to NHL, being selected by Buffalo Sabres in 2014 but having to wait until last year for his debut with the organization.

Still, once Olofsson got the chance, he used the most of it, and now both he and Sabres seem to be heading to a bright future together.

Former Arizona Coyotes and New Jersey Devils forward Taylor Hall has signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres worth $8 million, the NHL confirmed on Sunday.

Hall, who will turn 29 on November 14, scored 52 points (16 goals, 36 assists) in the combined 65 games he played for the Arizona Coyotes and New Jersey Devils last season, including six points in the postseason games.

“We are very fortunate here in Buffalo to have one of the elite centers in the game and we feel like we’re adding one of the elite wingers in the game,” Buffalo general manager Kevyn Adams exclaimed.

“We’re excited about the potential of that. (Coach) Ralph [Krueger] will put together the roster, the lines, and all that, to put us in a position to have the best success, but clearly, we identified that as a possibility, and I do think Taylor obviously understands the player that Jack is.”

Hall won the Hart Trophy in 2018, after being voted the NHL MVP for that season. This was after he attained a career-high points tally of 93 (39 goals, 54 assists) to lift the New Jersey Devils their first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance since 2012.

This weekend saw the Toronto Maple Leafs engage in several trade deals as they prepare for the commencement of the new NHL season.

Firstly, the Toronto Maple Leafs secured the services of Zach Bogosian, who won the 2020 Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay Lightning. Recently being made an unrestricted free agent, the 30-year-old defenseman signed a one-year contract with the Leafs worth $1 million.

Having played for both the Lightning and the Buffalo Sabers last season, Bogosian scored seven points (one goal, six assists) in 27 games. This included four points in 20 post-season games as he helped the Lightning in their quest for Stanley Cup victory.

The other major trade that caused some media buzz was the Leafs’ decision to part ways with forward Andreas Johnsson, who was traded to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday. In exchange, the Leafs received restricted free agent Joey Anderson.

“Andreas is a hardworking, competitive forward who can slot up and down the lineup,” New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald declared. “The overall versatility of his game will be a great complement to our centremen, with his skating, quickness, and scoring touch.”
