The Carolina Hurricanes are looking to convince Dougie Hamilton to sign a contract extension with the team prior to the start of the new NHL season.

Currently, the 27-year-old player is in the final year of his six-year contract with the Hurricanes and is en route to becoming an unrestricted free agent should he allow the contract to lapse.

General manager Don Waddell remains confidant in his team’s ability to convince Hamilton to resign with the franchise. He explained that the two parties are coming close to discussing Hamilton’s future with the squad and that negotiations may open up once Hamilton returns from his trip to Toronto.

Hamilton performed admirably for the Hurricanes last season, 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists) in 47 regular-season games. This was before Hamilton fractured his left fibula on January 16 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Should Hamilton resign with the Hurricanes, the North Carolina-based team will have a strong defensive lineup going into the new season, including the likes of Jaccob Slavin, Brett Pesce, Brady Skjei, Jake Gardiner and Haydn Fleury, all of whom committed themselves to represent the Hurricanes during the upcoming season.

Carolina Hurricanes are already laying the groundwork to extend their talented winger Andrei Svechnikov. According to Hurricanes’ general manager Don Waddell, the two side had engaged in negotiations and are optimistic about reaching an agreement sooner than later.

Waddell explained that they’re considering several different options that would allow them to keep Svechnikov with the organization. One of the possible scenarios is working out a short-term deal to help the team deal with the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic before striking a long-term deal later on.

Svechnikov had a stellar campaign in 2019/20, finishing the shortened regular season with 24 goals and 37 assists for a total of 61 points. Considering this and the fact that he only has one year left on his entry-level deal, it isn’t a surprise that Carolina wants to get him under contract as soon as possible.

Sources close to the Hurricanes organization reported that the team already offered a long-term deal to Andrei Svechnikov that would be for eight years and would come with a $7.5 million average annual salary. While Waddell didn’t talk numbers, he reiterated that he believes Svechinkov will be signed “at some point to some kind of extension.”

“We obviously want Andrei here,” he concluded.

The NHL restarted the season on August 1, and joined baseball (July 23) and basketball (July 30), as all major American sports have now returned, albeit very differently than what fans are used to. For more than 12 hours, from noon Eastern Time until after 1 AM, hockey enthusiasts were able to watch five different games, after a more than four months wait.

Jacob Slavin, the Hurricanes’ defenseman, made history by scoring the first NHL game in the month of August. The Hurricanes beat the New York Rangers 3-2 to start off the new format of the NHL tournament. All Eastern Conference games are being played in Toronto while all Western Conference games are being played in the hub city of Edmonton.

The historic day featured 2 big upsets, with the No. 12 seed Chicago Blackhawks beating the No. 5 seed, hometown Edmonton Oilers 6-4. Chicago was led by rookie forward Dominik Kubalik who put up 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists) to lead the victory in Game 1.

Later, the No. 12 seed Montreal Canadians upset the No. 5 seed Pittsburgh Peguins 3-2 in an overtime thriller. In addition, the New York Islanders beat the Florida Panthers 2-1 to round out the day of Eastern Conference competition, while the Calgary Flames beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 in the Western Conference.

Carolina Hurricanes are facing major issues ahead of their Stanley Cup Qualifiers against New York Rangers. Their All-Star defenseman Dougie Hamilton missed the practice on Thursday and is “unfit to play at this moment” according to Carolina’s head coach Rod Brind’Amour.

Hamilton dealt with a broken foot since January but appeared ready for action when Hurricanes entered the training camp ahead of NHL 2019/20 season resume. The 27-year-old player was a full participant in trainings for the most part of the camp, but started feeling “visible discomfort” during practice on Wednesday.

“He’s a talented player and very unique on the offensive side of things,” said Brind’Amour during a video call with reporters. “He was certainly missed when he was out for a large portion of the year and he’s a huge part of the offense of our team, so obviously we’re hoping that this isn’t something that’s long term.”

Carolina’s defensive line will be in big trouble if Hamilton can’t play in the best-of-five series against Rangers, as the team is already missing starter Brett Pesce due to a seson-ending surgery. Brind’Amour’s most probable alternatives on the position will be veterans Sami Vatanen and Brady Skjei, who joined Hurricanes ahead of February trade deadline.

Dougie Hamilton had a prolific first part of the season, contributing with 14 goals and 26 assists in just 47 games and earning his first All-Star appereance. Hamilton’s run came to an end in January when he suffered a broken foot and was initially ruled out for the season. However, the break due to coronavirus pandemic enabled him to recover enough to rejoin the team.

Hamilton previously also played with Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames. He has 299 points (93 goals and 206 assists) in 552 career games.

Carolina Hurricanes used the NHL trade deadline craze to address their defense after Brett Pesce went down with an injury. The team announced on Monday that they have acquired defensemen Brady Skjei from New York Rangers and Sami Vatanen from New Jersey Devils.

In order to get Skjei, Canes had to send a first-round draft pick in 2020 to New York. Devils, on the other hand, received conditional fourth-rounder in this year’s draft alongside defenseman Fredrik Claesson and forward Janne Kuokkanen.

Skjei comes to Carolina with a reputation of a versatile defenseman who is still young and has room to progress. He played 60 games this season, scoring eight goals and contributing with 15 assists.

“Brady is a big defenseman who checks all the boxes,” said Canes’ general manager Don Waddell. “He’s an excellent skater, he’s competitive, he can move the puck, and he can defend. He’s under contract through the 2023-24 season, so this is another acquisition that helps us immediately and in the long-term.”

Vatanen, on the other hand, is a veteran who brings much-needed playoff experience to Hurricanes. He’s been having a productive season so far, managing to account for 23 points in 47 games.

“Sami is player that fits our system well,” Waddell added. “His skating, vision, and puck-moving skills will help us out in all facets of the game. We expect him to return to the lineup in early March.”

Buffalo Sabres, who have been wheeling and dealing the entire offseason, have made another important addition to their roster by acquiring forward Jeff Skinner in a trade with Carolina Hurricanes. To get Skinner, who is former Calder Trophy winner as best NHL rookie during the 2010–11 season, Sabres sent prospect forward Cliff Pu, and three draft picks to Hurricanes.

“What’s exciting about this trade here for our group is it’s not just all about futures,” – said Sabres’ general manager Jason Botterill after the deal was made. “Here’s a player that comes in right away and helps our team right away. And I think that’s going to get our National Hockey League players excited.”

This trade could be considered a win-win situation for both teams. After finishing last three times in the previous five season, Sabres are looking to get back to winning ways and 50 to 60 points a season player like Jeff Skinner will undoubtedly help with that. On the other hand, Hurricanes are rebuilding and are looking to make their roster younger. Skinner didn’t fit into those plans, especially since he can become a free agent after the 2018-19 season.

“I think we felt culturally that we needed to make some changes,” – said Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell. “This was the right time for us to move on and provide Jeff with a fresh start in Buffalo.”

Although Hurricanes were shopping Jeff Skinner the entire offseason, with a full no-trade clause in his contract, the 26-year-old had the final say when it comes to his next destination. Skinner approved Buffalo because he liked the way in which this team is headed.

“I think my focus is winning and having a good season, and right now coming into camp and being as prepared as possible to sort of start on the right foot,” – said Skinner. “That’s the top thing. I think you look at the young core, the management, the ownership, and all these things that I touched on, those things are sort of at the top of your list.”

After making his debut during the 2010-11 season, Jeff Skinner went on to play 579 games in NHL and scored 204 goals alongside providing 175 assists.
