The Cleveland Cavaliers have managed to extend one of their young, talented cornerstones, ensuring that he will stay in Cleveland until at least the 2022-2023 season.

The Cavaliers agreed to a four-year, $31 million contract extension with small forward Cedi Osman on Thursday. His new deal will raise his salary considerably and keep him in Cleveland as the team looks to rebuild over the next few years.

The fourth year of the contract, which would be for the 2023-24 season, is non-guaranteed. This gives Cleveland the flexibility to move away from the contract extension after only three years if they are unhappy with Osman’s play.

Osman, a 24-year-old Turkey native, has quickly become a fan favorite in Cleveland since making his stateside debut in the 2017-18 season. While he only played sparingly during his rookie year, he became a starter in 2018-19, averaging 13.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.

The small forward, who played in the 2019 NBA Rising Stars Challenge, is expected to be one of Cleveland’s focal points for its ongoing rebuild alongside point guard Collin Sexton. The Cavaliers are looking to find young, talented players like these two to help lift them back to contention after LeBron James’ departure.

Now, they have at least one of their pieces locked up for the foreseeable future.
