Star defensive tackle Chris Jones is still holding out for a new contract even though the Kansas City Chiefs are less than a week from playing their first game of the 2023 NFL season. This prompted Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce to make a public plea to Jones.

During a recent appearance on the New Heights podcast, Kelce asked Jones to rejoin the team and said the Chiefs badly need him.

“Chris, can you please come back? You’re really scaring me,” Kelce said. “I don’t get it. You must know something that I don’t know because I just don’t get it. I really want to get another Super Bowl ring with you, brother. This is me bargaining with you to just come back and play football for the Chiefs. Please, we need you. We need you bad.”

It remains to be seen whether Jones gets moved by Kelce’s message, although Chiefs’ fans shouldn’t hold their breath. The 29-year-old Pro Bowler made it clear that he wants a new contract and hinted that he is willing to miss a big chunk of the regular season if that doesn’t happen.

Jones matched his career-high with 15.5 sacks in 2022 while receiving a First-team All-Pro nod. He has one year left on his current deal, which comes with a $20 million annual salary.

The Chiefs are opening the 2023 NFL season with a Thursday Night Football game against the Detroit Lions on September 7.

Kansas City Chiefs and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones reportedly agreed to a long-term deal. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Tuesday that Jones inked a four-year contract that could be worth up to $85 million.

Chiefs previously placed a franchise tag on Jones, and it seemed in recent weeks that the two sides are far apart from making an agreement. However, negotiations gained momentum in recent days and resulted in a new deal for the 26-year-old player.

While Chiefs haven’t made the official announcement, Jones confirmed the news on his social media.

According to Schefter, the base value of Chris Jones’ new deal is $80 million and includes $37 million up front and $60 million guaranteed for injury. Also, Jones can bag in an extra $5 million if he meets certain incentives.

Jones emerged as one of the best DTs in the league in recent years, earning Second-team All-Pro honors in 2018 and being selected to Pro Bowl last season. He racked up 136 tackles, 33.0 sacks, 20 pass deflections, two interceptions, and one touchdown since making his NFL debut in 2016.

By signing Jones to this massive extension, Chiefs are now the only NFL team that handed $60 million in guarantees to three of their players. The franchise signed defensive end Frank Clark to an extension with $62.3 million guaranteed last year, while also handing star quarterback Patrick Mahomes a 10-year extension with $140 million guaranteed in early July.

Kansas City Chiefs and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones could go their separate ways after the 2020 NFL season. The two sides have been negotiating a long-term deal for the majority of the offseason but, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer, haven’t been making any significant progress.

Jones’ rookie deal expired back in March, but the Chiefs decided to use a franchise tag in order to keep him for 2020. The organization also wants to make him part of their long-term future, but those attempts haven’t been fruitful.

Jones and Chiefs still have until July 15th to make a deal and avoid the franchise tag coming into the effect. If that doesn’t happen, the 25-year-old would then play on a $16.1 million deal in 2020 and would be set for free agency next year.

Multiple reports indicate that the main issue in the talks is Chris Jones’ high demands. He reportedly wants more than $21 million in annual salary, which would place him among the highest-paid defensive players in the league. For cash-strapped Chiefs, this isn’t a number they are even remotely comfortable with.

The Chiefs, who were among the teams with least cap space available this offseason, already have a defensive player with a $21+ million salary in defensive end Frank Clark. They also have to work out a long-term deal for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, with his contract set to be the biggest in league history. Most of their money will be tied in these deals and having Jones for the money he asks simply doesn’t look possible.

The only solution would be for Jones to come down a bit, but that doesn’t look likely at the moment, so expect Chiefs to be on the market for a new DT pretty soon.

Jones has one Pro Bowl appearance and one Second-Team All-Pro selection since entering the league in 2016. His NFL career stats include 136 tackles, 33.0 sacks, 20 pass deflections, two interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

Kansas City Chiefs are making sure that Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones remains on their team for the 2020 NFL season. According to NFL Insider Ian Rapaport, Chiefs will use the franchise tag on Jones while they try to negotiate a new deal with the 25-year-old.

Jones, who played the previous four years on a rookie contract, was set to become a free agent in March. As Chiefs couldn’t lock him on an extension so far, the team decided not to take any risks and ensure he’s around even if the negotiations aren’t fruitful.

Under the franchise tag, Jones would earn around $16 million, which is far less than he could get on an open market. He has two productive seasons behind him, in which he racked up 24.5 tackles, 76 tackles and nine passes deflections. This could easily guarantee him a contract worth north of $100 million.

Chris Jones himself isn’t too happy about the franchise tag, thinking he showed enough to get paid right away. “It’s a little hard,” he said during his recent appearance on Fox Sports. “It’s like, ‘What else y’all want me to do? I’ve got to go ahead and get 30 sacks — 35 sacks — to show y’all I can?”

If the two sides realize they are too far away during the negotiating process, Chiefs might end up trading the player and try to get some value for him rather than letting him walk. Jones is aware of this scenario and isn’t opposed to it if that means he’ll get paid.

“But the beautiful thing about the franchise tag [is] that it can go one of two ways,” he added. “The team can either long-term you to have you for the future, or they can trade you. Either way, I’ll get paid benefits.”
