Before stepping on the field against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night, the Cincinnati Reds’ legend Joey Votto hasn’t played in 10 months. But if you didn’t know this information, you would have no idea.

Votto played a significant role in Reds’ 5-4 victory over the Rockies, homering in the bottom fifth and hitting a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.

Votto underwent season-ending surgery in August to repair a torn left rotator cuff. At the time, the 39-year-old player was expected to be back by Opening Day, but several setbacks prolonged his return. Also, the Reds didn’t want to take any chances, especially after a great start to the campaign.

The Reds are currently 38-35 and sit at the top of the NL Central with half a game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers. They have been especially good lately, extending their winning streak to nine games after the Rockies’ game.

This great run is giving Cincinnati hope that they can make some real noise in 2023. They have only been to the playoffs once in the past decade and haven’t reached the NL Championship Series since 1995.

“Long time coming,” Votto said after the game. “Ever since I’ve watched them put it on each other, I was thinking about how badly I want that on me because it’s tied to a winning moment, and that’s exactly — exactly — what this team’s about. This is a different energy than I’ve experienced in years, maybe in my entire career, the way these guys think about themselves and how hard they play. I wanted to be a part of this. We are all a part of this.”

The Cincinnati Reds gave a vote of confidence to manager David Bell on Wednesday by rewarding him with a two-year extension. The contract will keep Bell with the franchise through the 2023 MLB season.

The deal was announced by Reds general manager Nick Krall, who told the media that Bell has “done a great job with the team we have right now.”

“We got to the playoffs last year, and we’ve had a great run this year, and we still have a chance,” said Krall after the 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. “He knows how to run a clubhouse, and he knows how to run a dugout.”

Bell himself also confirmed the news to reporters and said that he also expects his coaching staff to return with him next season.

The Reds currently sit third in NL Central with a 78-74 record. They are 13.5 games behind the leading Milwaukee Brewers and four games behind the second-place St. Louis Cardinals.

David Bell took over the Cincinnati Reds in 2019, returning to the organization after six years. He previously served as manager for the Reds’ Double-A affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats, between 2008 and 2011, and as manager for their Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats, between 2011 and 2012.

In his first season in Cincinnati, Bell led the Reds to a 75-87 record, the franchise’s best since 2014. He followed that up with a playoff appearance in shortened 2020 MLB season that saw the Reds make the postseason for the first time since 2013. They ended up being swept by the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card Game.

We’re barely ten games into the MLB season, and we already can’t wait to get to the playoffs. After so much anticipation and an exciting Spring Training, we finally got our first look at our new and improved teams, and now it’s time to reassess things a tad. Here’s our definitive top-five ranking of the MLB teams.

5. Cincinnati Reds

Give the Reds credit for coming out of the gate strong and winning five out of six home games. Currently sitting atop the NL Central Division with a 6-3 record, they’ve earned their spot on this list. But it’ll take work for them to maintain it.

4. Minnesota Twins

Although they’ve been shaky, the fact of the matter is that the Twins have an excellent team this year. One highlight so far for them this season has been the 40-year-old Nelson Cruz, who’s hit four homers and gotten a hit in every game so far.

3. New York Yankees

The Yankees have also had a slow start, but the sheer talent on their roster is more than enough for them to crack the top three of this list. If Aaron Judge and company are the players we think they are, they’ll rise to the top of the American League soon enough.

2. San Diego Padres

We were already excited about the Padres before the season started. Then Joe Musgrove threw the first no-hitter in franchise history, and we couldn’t help but feel giddy about their potential this season.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

Far and away the most talented roster in the league, the Dodgers seem well-equipped to defend their title this season. They’re off to an incredible start as well, leading the league with an 8-2 record.

Right-hander Trevor Bauer is definitely hitting the free agency this offseason. According to Bauer’s agent Rachel Luba, her client rejected the qualifying offer from Cincinnati Reds that would pay him $18.9 million next season.

Bauer is now available to talk with interested MLB teams, but Luba added that the 29-year-old player doesn’t rule out a return to Cincinnati. Still, in order for this to happen, the Reds will have to offer him a long-term contract.

Bauer is expected to attract significant interest on the open market, especially considering a stellar campaign he had in 2020. He finished the season with a 5-4 record, posting 1.73 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 11 games he started.

Chicago White Sox are reportedly the biggest favorites to land Trevor Bauer at the moment. The White Sox have a talented team but need a reliable hand in the rotation to put them over the top. Bauer can be that.

Other intriguing options include New York Mets, San Diego Padres, and Los Angeles Angels.

Bauer spent the last two seasons with Reds, while previously suiting up for Arizona Diamondbacks and Cleveland Indians. He has an All-Star appearance from 2018.

After the Cincinnati Reds traded away meteoric outfielder Yasiel Puig to the Cleveland Indians just before last month’s MLB Trade Deadline, many were unsure if the team had another player of Puig’s caliber to replace his production in the outfield.

It turns out that rookie outfielder Aristides Aquino has been more than up to the task.

The 25-year-old newcomer blasted a solo home run off of Washington Nationals reliever Tanner Rainey on Monday night, the eighth home run that he has hit in his first 12 games since being called up. That is the most home runs ever hit by a rookie in the first twelve games since his call-up.

Aquino, a native of the Dominican Republic, has been unstoppable since making his season debut on August 1st against the Atlanta Braves. After hitting his first career home run in Atlanta on the 3rd of this month, he has gradually gotten hotter, blasting another home run in a short two-game series against the Angels, and then exploding for five home runs in the Reds’ weekend series against the Cubs.

His solo shot on Monday night in the Reds’ series opener at Nationals Park traveled 425 feet to right-center field, showing off the impressive power that has become the rookie’s hallmark since making his debut at the beginning of the month.

Aquino will look to continue his historic hot streak on Tuesday against the Nats.

The Cincinnati Reds became the first Major League Baseball team to change managers in 2018, parting ways with manager Bryan Price following a 3-15 start to the season, which left the Reds in the last place in the National League’s Central Division.

The Reds hired the 55-year-old Price in 2014 with hopes that he would be able to lead them over the playoff hurdle that has plagued baseball’s oldest franchise for nearly a quarter-century. Cincinnati has not won a playoff series since beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995’s NL Division Series, and after three playoff appearances under Dusty Baker proved fruitless, the Reds decided Price was the man to restore the franchise’s former glory.

Instead, the rise of the Chicago Cubs and the continued strength of the St. Louis Cardinals ensured the Reds never played a postseason game under Price. The team’s best season under his leadership was his first season, where the Reds won 76 games. Following his dismissal, Price released a statement thanking the Reds and general manager Walt Jocketty for the chance to manage the club.

Reds Next Move

Cincinnati will turn to Jim Riggleman as its manager for the remainder of the season. Riggleman, 65, was the team’s bench coach under Price and brings a wealth of major league managerial experience to the job. The Reds will be the fifth team Riggleman has led in his career, as he previously served as the manager of the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals.
