Veteran point guard Ricky Rubio no longer intends to play in the NBA. Rubio agreed to a contract buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this week while also announcing his retirement from the league.

The Cavaliers paid tribute to Rubio via multiple social media posts while thanking the Spaniard for his contributions to the franchise.

Rubio has been away from the Cavs since August when he took a break from basketball in order to focus on his mental health. Back in December, The Athletic reported that Rubio’s return to the team is unlikely and that Cleveland is working with the player towards a solution that would free up a roster spot for the team and give them financial flexibility.

Rubio still had two years left on the three-year, $18 million contract he signed in 2022. He played 33 games in 2022–23, which came after ACL injury recovery, and averaged 5.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski previously reported that Rubio still hasn’t made up his mind on his future. There is a chance that he will return to basketball at some point, but if that happens, he will play in his home country.

Rubio was drafted fifth overall in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves but didn’t come into the league until the 2011-12 season. He spent the first six years of his NBA career with the Wolves before embarking on stints with the Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, Minnesota again, and finally the Cavs.

During his 12 seasons in the NBA, Rubio averaged 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.8 steals.

Veteran center Tristan Thompson is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers after agreeing to a one-year deal with the franchise. Thompson spent the first nine years of his NBA career with the Cavs, who selected him fourth overall in the 2011 NBA Draft.

Thompson hasn’t played at all during the 2022-23 regular season before joining the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of their playoff run. The 32-year-old appeared in six games, averaging 1.8 points and 1.7 rebounds.

Thompson’s first stint with the Cavs was mostly successful. He was the starting center for the Cleveland team that won the NBA title in 2016 and played an important role in the Cavaliers’ four consecutive NBA Finals trips between 2015 and 2018.

The Cavs likely reunited with Thompson to add some veteran leadership and experience to their locker room. Thompson will also provide depth at the frontcourt and might prove to be a useful player for a team that has playoff aspirations.

After leaving the Cavs at the end of the 2019–20 NBA season, Thompson also played with the Boston Celtics, the Indiana Pacers, the Sacramento Kings, and the Chicago Bulls. He has averaged 9.0 points and 8.4 rebounds in the regular season throughout his career. In 94 playoff games, Thompson put up 7.1 points and 7.8 boards per game.

The New York Knicks finished the job against the Cleveland Cavaliers with a 106-95 win on Wednesday to advance to the Eastern Conference semi-finals. This is the first time that the Knicks got out of the first round of the NBA playoffs since 2013.

Many believed that the Cavs would find a way to prolong the series, facing a 1-3 deficit in the series and playing in front of the home crowd. However, the Knicks were the more aggressive team from the get-go, building a 10-point lead at the half.

Cleveland attempted a comeback on several occasions in the third and fourth quarters, but each time the Knicks found ways to make stops at the right moment or responded offensively to keep the lead intact.

Jalen Brunson delivered another great performance, scoring 23 points and adding four rebounds and four assists. RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley added 21 points and 19 points, respectively.

Donovan Mitchell had 28 points, seven boards, and five assists for the Cavaliers, but struggled from beyond the arc, going 3 of 12. Darius Garland followed with 21 points and four assists.

The New York Knicks will now face the Miami Heat in the semi-finals, possibly doing so without one of their main players. The Knicks’ star forward Julius Randle rolled his ankle late in the first half and didn’t return to the game after. The full extent of his injury remains unknown.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Dean Wade has been sidelined for up to a month after injuring his left shoulder during the Cavs’ 107-96 win over the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

Wade spent 10 minutes on the court before spraining his shoulder. He had to exit the game immediately as a result of his injury. Following the game, the 26-year-old player underwent a series of imaging tests which confirmed that he had suffered an AC joint sprain.

Before going off injured against Orlando, Wade had racked up an average of 6.4 points and 4.1 rebounds in 24.1 minutes per game. With the Cavs already struggling with a series of injury issues, Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has called on Wade to start nine games this season.

Joining Wade on the sidelines as the Cavs face the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday is All-Star center Jarrett Allen, who missed Sunday’s 92-81 loss against the New York Knicks. This is the fifth straight game that the center has missed out on due to a back injury.

Currently, Cleveland sits in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 15-9 record despite the ongoing injury crisis.

Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland went through his first full-contact practice session on Tuesday since suffering a serious left eye injury. According to the team, there is a possibility that Garland could make his return to action in the Cavs’ upcoming game against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old player was accidentally poked in the eye by the Toronto Raptors’ Gary Trent Jr. during the season opener, resulting in excessive swelling and a cut to his eyelid. As a result, Garland was sidelined by injury for five games.

Following his injury, Garland has been spotted on Cleveland’s bench wearing dark sunglasses. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff maintains that there is little chance of Garland appearing in Cleveland’s upcoming game against the Celtics as he continues to be listed as questionable.

“He went through everything. It’s how he’s feeling tomorrow and what the swelling looks like,” Bickerstaff elaborated. “But he was good today. He’s done enough to go ahead and play if he’s gonna play.”

In addition to engaging in full-contact practice with his teammates, Garland stayed on the court afterward to participate in additional drills with the Cavs’ assistant coaches.

The Brooklyn Nets and the Minnesota Timberwolves are the first two teams to secure their spot in the 2022 NBA Playoffs through the Play-In tournament. The Nets beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-115 to take the No. 7 seed in Eastern Conference, while Timberwolves got a 104-109 win over the LA Clippers to grab the seventh seed in Western Conference.

The Nets will now take on the Boston Celtics in the First round of playoffs while the Timberwolves face the Memphis Grizzlies.

Brooklyn’s win over the Cavs was highlighted by the performance of their All-Star duo, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. Irving stole the show with 34 points, 12 assists, and three rebounds, while Durant added 25 points, 11 assists, and five boards.

Cleveland’s best player on the night was guard Darius Garland, who matched Irving’s 34, while rookie Evan Mobley contributed with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Second-year player Anthony Edwards will take the most credit for Minnesota’s win with 30 points and five rebounds. Veteran guard D’Angelo Russell had 29 points, while the team’s biggest star Karl-Anthony Towns scored 11 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Paul George had to do it all for the Clippers, scoring 34 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and dishing five assists.

The Cavs and the Clippers’ playoffs’ hopes are still alive despite the losses. The Cavaliers will play the winner of the Charlotte Hornets vs. Atlanta Hawks matchup for the eighth seed, while the LA team will face either San Antonio Spurs or New Orleans Pelicans to get the No. 8 in the West.

Indiana Pacers have traded shooting guard Caris LeVert to the Cleveland Cavaliers. In exchange for LeVert, the Pacers received point guard Ricky Rubio, a lottery-protected first-round pick in 2022, and two second-rounders.

Indiana confirmed the news on their social media on Monday via post in which they’ve wished LeVert “all the best in Cleveland.”

The Pacers have been looking to reshuffle their roster for a while, so trading LeVert isn’t shocking. Indiana receives healthy draft compensation while also getting some money off their books next season with Rubio’s expiring contract. The team is expected to remain active ahead of the NBA trade deadline and has already shown willingness to entertain offers for All-Star Domantas Sabonis and talented big Myles Turner.

The Cavs, on the other hand, add another talented player to their young core. Caris LeVert played well when taking the floor for the Pacers this season and is currently averaging 18.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game in 2021-22. Cleveland expects LeVert to give them a scoring boost moving forward and help them continue their postseason push. The franchise also has long-term plans for the 27-year-old and reportedly plans to sign him to an extension in the offseason.

The Cleveland Cavaliers has been performing above all expectations this season and is currently fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 33-21 record. The Cavaliers are also just one game behind the top-seeded Miami Heat.

After losing point guard Ricky Rubio to a season-ending ACL injury, the Cleveland Cavaliers moved quickly to add some experience to their backcourt. On Monday, the team announced that they had acquired veteran guard Rajon Rondo in a three-team trade that also involved the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks.

The Knicks will receive guard Denzel Valentine from the Cavs and cash considerations and draft rights to Wang Zhelin and Brad Newley from the Lakers as part of the trade. On the other hand, the LA team will get the draft rights to Louis Labeyrie.

Rondo returned to the Lakers in the offseason after splitting 2020-21 between the Atlanta Hawks and the LA Clippers. However, the 35-year-old saw limited action in Los Angeles, playing in just 18 games and 3.1 points and 3.7 assists per contest.

The Cavaliers were highly motivated to do this deal, especially since the loss of Rubio left them without a veteran presence on the bench. Cleveland has exceeded expectations in 2021-22 and is currently fifth in Eastern Conference with a 21-16 record. Rondo is expected to play a significant role for the team moving forward, and the Cavs believe he will help them continue to push for the playoffs.

On the other hand, the Lakers did the deal as Rondo dropped out of rotation, and it was unlikely he would crack it again anytime soon. His departure opens up a roster spot for the team, which they will most likely use to sign forward Stanley Johnson.

Finally, the Knicks probably wanted to see whether they could get something out of Valentine, who averaged 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds with Cleveland this season. If not, they can move away from him at no cost considering he is on the partially-guaranteed deal.

The Cleveland Cavaliers confirmed late last week that the team would be without starting guard Collin Sexton for the rest of the 2021-22 NBA season. Sexton is out after undergoing surgery to repair damage in his left knee.

According to the Cavs’ announcement, Sexton suffered a torn meniscus in early November during a game against the New York Knicks. He had a procedure last Wednesday at Atlanta’s Emory University Sports Medicine Center.

Sexton played 11 games for the Cavs this season while averaging 16.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. The 22-year-old is set to become a restricted free agent next summer after the two sides failed to reach an extension agreement.

Losing Sexton is a tough blow for Cleveland, considering they are having their best start of the season since 2018–19. The Cavs, who are currently sixth in Eastern Conference, were at one point 9-5 before dropping the last three games.

The Cavaliers’ skid might not be over as Sexton is just one of several players the team will be missing in the future. Their rookie sensation Evan Mobley is expected to be out for at least one month due to a right elbow sprain, while forward Cedi Osman is currently sidelined due to lower back spasms.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton will be one of the players from the 2018 draft class to hit the restricted free agency next summer. Sexton and the Cavs were open to getting an extension done ahead of Monday’s deadline but couldn’t come to an agreement in part due to player’s high demands early on, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

Fedor reports that Sexton and his camp hoped the 2018 eighth overall pick would command a deal in the range of around $100 million. However, the Cavs never approached that number, and the two sides failed to get close later in the negotiations.

Still, there is reportedly no bad blood at the moment between Cleveland and Sexton. The 22-year-old would still like to remain with the organization despite the failed extension talks, while the Cavs also view him as a part of their future. There is optimism among involved parties that a deal can be reached at the end of the 2021-22 season.

“We’ve put a lot into Collin, working with him. We believe in him,” the Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said of Sexton recently. “Would love to have him here as part of what we’re doing.”

Collin Sexton was arguably the Cavs’ best player last season, averaging career-highs across the board. He led the team with 24.3 points per game while also adding 3.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.0 steals on average. Still, he has been described as having “tunnel vision” at moments while failing to make an extra effort on defense.

If he hits the restricted free agency without an agreement with the Cavs, Sexton should have no problem getting a big offer elsewhere if he continues to improve as he did since entering the NBA. But the most likely scenario is that he remains in Cleveland and continues to be a key component of their young core for years to come.
