Cleveland Indians ace Shane Bieber will return to the mound before the 2021 MLB season wraps up after all. Bieber is expected to start in Friday’s clash against the Chicago White Sox, which would be his first MLB appearance in more than three months.

Bieber, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, hasn’t played in the majors since early June when he was shut down due to a strained shoulder. But according to Indians manager DeMarlo Hale, the 26-year-old slinger has made enough progress to resume his role in the rotation.

“He felt pretty good, so we’re comfortable with starting him Friday,” Hale said on Wednesday via ESPN. “We’ll definitely put a pitch count on him. We haven’t established that yet, but it won’t be too big of a jump from a rehab game in the minors.”

Bieber started his comeback with Cleveland’s Double-A affiliate the Akron RubberDucks, making a start for the team over the weekend and having 57 pitches in just over three innings. He followed that up with a bullpen session with the Indians earlier this week.

The Cleveland Indians will be happy to see Bieber, who was 7-4 early in 2021, back on the mound. In his absence, the team struggled and fell out of the playoff picture. They currently own a 74-76 record that is enough for the second spot in AL Central.

The Cleveland Indians continue to have bad luck with the catcher position in 2021. After being without Gold Glove Award winner Roberto Perez for the better part of the season, the Indians have now lost veteran Wilson Ramos for the rest of this year’s campaign.

According to reports, Ramos suffered a torn ACL and MCL sprain during Cleveland’s 7-5 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. The 34-year-old catcher will have to undergo surgery in the coming weeks to have the damage repaired and is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines.

While the Indians still haven’t made an official announcement about the matter, they did share a tweet from the team’s beat writer Mandy Bell that describes the extent of Ramos’ injury.

Wilson Ramos started the season with the Detroit Tigers, playing 35 games with the franchise and managing a .200 batting average with six home runs and 13 RBIs. After being released by the Tigers in late June, Ramos inked a minor league contract with the Indians.

Since arriving in Cleveland, Ramos made nine appearances and batted .226. He also had two homers and seven RBIs.

With Roberto Perez still going through rehab after undergoing a finger surgery, the Indians will probably rely on Austin Hedges to handle the catching duties for the rest of the season. Hedges, who is playing his first full season in Cleveland, managed a .185 batting average, seven home runs, and 24 RBIs in 68 games in 2021.

The Cleveland Indians and Cody Allen announced on Wednesday that the former star reliever and franchise legend is hanging up the cleats after an eight-year career.

Allen was selected in the 23rd round of the 2011 Draft by the Indians, with whom he made his big league debut in 2012. Allen quickly became a fixture in the team’s bullpen as a reliable right-handed arm.

He took over as the team’s regular closer in 2014 and excelled, posting a 2.07 ERA and 24 saves in his debut campaign in the role. He continued as the team’s closer through 2018, posting a sub-3 ERA in each season with Cleveland with the exception of his final one.

He finished his tenure in Cleveland as the franchise’s all-time saves leader with 149, and also set marks for the most relief appearances (456) and strikeouts (564) in the team’s history.

Allen’s final Major League season was in 2019 with the Angels, where he struggled with walks and injuries, posting a 6.26 ERA in 25 appearances.

His decision to retire comes after a 2020 season in which he did not appear in the Majors, being released by the Rangers and Cubs at different points during the pandemic-shortened season.

Allen’s career was an incredible success for such a low draft pick, and he will be remembered fondly by Cleveland fans as a key part of their mid-2010s run of playoff appearances.

After billionaire Steven Cohen bought the New York Mets late last year, the team was poised to make a big splash this year.

And that’s just what they did, putting together a six-player trade with the Cleveland Indians to acquire superstar and franchise icon Francisco Lindor.

In the trade, the Mets will be getting the superstar shortstop and pitcher Carlos Carrasco while the Indians will get two young shortstops, Andres Gimenez and Amed Rosario, outfielder Isaiah Greene, and pitcher Josh Wolf.

At face value, it appears that the Mets have easily won this trade. They get one of the best shortstops in the game and a solid pitcher for six fairly unproven players. They upgraded their roster significantly and didn’t lose any of their best prospects either. It’s hard to see anything negative about this trade from New York’s point of view.

Not only did the Cleveland Indians lose in this trade, but so did the entire fanbase. Lindor was one of the city’s most celebrated athletes for years. Pitcher Carrasco was also a very popular player who dedicated himself to making a positive impact in the community off the field as well.

Lidor should also be happy with the trade. He no longer has to worry about trade rumors and can focus on baseball again, playing for a team that finally has the money to make big moves and perhaps contend for a World Series in the near future.

The San Diego Padres announced that pitcher Mike Clevinger will need to undergo Tommy John Surgery.

This means that Clevinger is going to miss the entire 2021 MLB season. With the injury in mind, the Padres reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with Clevinger worth $11.5 million.

Finding starting pitchers is going to be a major priority for the Padres this offseason. Their current starting rotation includes Dinelson Lamet, Zach Davies, and Chris Paddack.

If they aren’t able to find a pitcher they like on the market this offseason, they also have a solid stable of young prospects that they can turn to, including MacKenzie Gore and Ryan Weathers.

The Padres acquired Clevinger in a trade with the Cleveland Indians at this year’s trade deadline. Clevinger was diagnosed with a right posterior elbow impingement on September 23.

The last game he played was on October 6, in the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was taken out of the game in the second inning.

Over the last three seasons, Clevinger has posted a 2.91 ERA with a strike out per walk ratio of more than 3.5 to 1.

Long-time Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona, who has missed the majority of the MLB regular season due to health problems, has re-entered the team’s quarantine bubble in advance of the upcoming MLB Playoffs and will be a part of the team in October.

Francona, who is still slated to miss the rest of the regular season, has still not made a final decision when it comes to managing in the playoffs, but his presence in the team’s bubble will at least open the door to that possibility. Even if he doesn’t return to manage on the field in October, his presence still could be useful for a team that will look to advance deep into the postseason.

“It gives (Francona) an opportunity to be around the team, even if it’s not in the dugout,” Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti explained before the team’s Wednesday night game against the White Sox.

The 61-year-old manager has missed 42 games this season due to gastrointestinal issues and a surgery as well as a blood-clotting condition.

Francona, a two-time World Series champion and a two-time AL Manager of the Year, has managed in 9 different MLB postseasons in his 19-year managerial career and could provide a real boost for his team whether it’s on or off the field.

The 2020 MLB postseason picture got a bit clearer on Thursday night, as Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago Cubs all managed to secure the playoff spot.

Braves got their spot by clinching the NL East title for the third straight year, beating Miami Marlins 11-1 to get there. Atlanta was fueled by Bryse Wilson, who pitched five scoreless innings, while Marcell Ozuna added two home runs.

Cleveland, on the other hand, secured a 5-3 win over Chicago White Sox that pushed them to a 31-24 record and a wild-card berth in American League. Indians’ win was highlighted by third baseman Jose Ramirez’s three-run homer in the 10th inning.

“Once I hit it, I knew it was a home run because I got it right on the barrel,” said Ramirez after the game. “There was a lot less champagne than usual, but it was still a good celebration.”

Finally, Chicago Cubs suffered a 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh Pirates but still managed to book their ticket to the postseason. Cubs squeezed in thanks to the Washington Nationals’ sweep of Philadelphia Phillies.

Indians joined Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, NY Yankees, and Minnesota Twins as the playoff teams from American League. Braves and Cubs, on the other hand, will represent the National League alongside Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.

Cleveland Indians’ starting pitcher Shane Bieber helped his team to a 2-0 win over Minnesota Twins on Thursday night while also managing to tie the 66-year-old MLB record.

Bieber shut down 13 Minnesota’s batters on Thursday, giving him 27 strikeouts in two games he started in 2020. With this, the 25-year-old player tied the MLB record for most strikeouts in the first two starts of the season, previously held by Brooklyn Dodgers’ Karl Spooner who did this feat in 1954.

Bieber also became the first American League pitcher to have consecutive starts with 13 strikeouts and zero runs allowed.

“I’ve never been that much of a punch-out pitcher, especially coming up through the minors,” said  Bieber after the game. “The book on me was pitch to contact, this and that. I’ve made some adjustments the past couple years and started to see some swings and misses.”

Shane Bieber had his MLB debut with Indians in 2018, playing 20 games and posting 4.55 ERA and 118 strikeouts in his first season in the majors. Bieber followed that up with an All-Star campaign in 2019, when he had 3.28 ERA, 259 strikeouts and 15-8 record.

Cleveland Indians’ outfielder Franmil Reyes won’t join the rest of the team for the upcoming training camp. Indians made the decision as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

According to the team, Reyes attended a party over the weekend but failed to adhere to a social distancing ruler while also not wearing a mask. The Indians now require the 25-year-old OF to provide a negative test on COVID-19 before allowing him to train with the team again.

Indians’ manager Terry Francona explained that Reyes isn’t being punished, but that the organization decided to be extra careful.

“He’s not in the penalty box,” said Francona. “It’s just the way we have to operate right now. So, hopefully we’ll see him soon.”

Indians are scheduled to open the 2020 MLB season on July 24th, when they welcome Kansas City Royals at Progressive Field.

Franmil Reyes joined Cleveland midway through the 2019 season from San Diego Padres. He finished the year by playing 51 games with Indians, posting a .237 batting average, with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs.

Since making his MLB debut in 2018, Reyes bats .260 and has a total of 53 homers.

The Cleveland Indians look set to make their final push for the playoffs without starting second baseman Jason Kipnis, who will miss the rest of the season with a fracture in his right hamate bone.

The veteran second baseman suffered the injury in Cleveland’s Sunday win over the Minnesota Twins after a swing against reliever Sergio Romo. Incredibly, he managed to stay in the game after the injury and even managed to rap a double off of Romo in the very same at-bat.

This leaves the Indians without another starting infielder, as they are already without two-time All-Star Jose Ramirez for the rest of the season due to the very same injury that Kipnis suffered.

The Illinois native, who has been a fixture in the Indians’ lineup for the better part of the last decade, was having a decent season up until his injury, batting .245 with 17 home runs and playing good defense at second base.

He is expected to be replaced in the lineup by a combination of Mike Freeman, Yu Chang, and Andrew Velazquez, who was called up to replace him on Cleveland’s roster.

This will be Kipnis’s last season in Cleveland, more than likely, as the team is expected to turn down its option for the veteran second baseman’s services next season.
