After finishing under .500 for the fourth straight season, the Colorado Rockies decided to shake things up when it comes to the coaching staff. Surprisingly, however, the changes won’twon’t affect manager Bud Black.

The Rockies confirmed on Thursday that they will keep Black in the dugout for the 2023 MBL campaign despite the 68-94 finish this season. However, hitting coach Dave Magadan and third base and infield coach Stu Cole were not so lucky.

Magadan, who was with the Rockies since 2019, will leave the franchise after the two parties “mutually agreed to part ways.” ” On the other hand, Stu Cole, who has been a coach within the organization since 2013, was reassigned to minor league staff.

Bud Black joined the Rockies in 2017, and his stint in Colorado got off to a great start. In his first season, he got the Rockies back to playoffs for the first time since 2009 while reaching the NLDS the following year. But this turned out to be the highlight of Black’sBlack’s spell with the franchise.

The Rockies have struggled since then, failing to win more than 74 games in either of the following four seasons. It appears that early success was enough to secure Black another chance despite this, but 2023 might be his last one.

Even though the San Francisco Giants are currently at 18-19 for the season, they haven’t been having the greatest year. But, they looked pretty darn good against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.

The Giants exploded offensively, hanging 23 runs on the hapless Rockies in a 23-5 victory.

When a team scores 23 runs, it’s safe to assume that just about the entire roster had a good day at the plate. However, there were a few players who had ridiculous days, particularly Alex Dickerson. Dickerson went 5-for-6 at the plate hitting three home runs, tallying six RBI, and five runs.

Shortstop Brandon Crawford also had himself a day, going 3-for-6 with six RBI and a three-run dinger. Second baseman Donovan Solano was similarly effective, batting 4-for-6 with six RBI and two runs.

With this type of team performance, it’s obvious that the Giants were on their way to setting some type of MLB record on Tuesday. San Francisco became the first team since RBI became an official statistic 100 years ago to have three players that finished a game with 6 RBI apiece.

Is this offensive eruption a sign that the Giants are turning things around in hopes of making a late-season playoff run? Maybe. The team has now won three games straight.

The Colorado Rockies are still hanging around in the NL playoff race just past the halfway point of the 2020 season, which led them to make a move on Sunday for Orioles relief pitcher Mychal Givens.

Colorado, which heads into the new week with a 17-17 record and right on the edge of playoff qualification, wanted to upgrade its bullpen, which holds the third-worst ERA in the entire league at 5.81.

The Rockies are getting a version of Givens that looks much like the one that became one of the best setup men in the Major Leagues during his first few seasons. After having trouble as the team’s closer last season, Givens has excelled back in his old role this year with a 1.38 ERA and a 38% strikeout rate.

Colorado, which is missing important players like Scott Oberg and Wade Davis in its ‘pen this season, will add an important veteran arm to go along with a cast of plenty of inexperienced pitchers in its bullpen as the team looks to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Baltimore, in turn, has acquired Rockies prospects Tyler Nevin and Terrin Vavra as well as a player to be named later in exchange for their former star reliever.

While the MLB’s Opening Weekend might have been a strange occasion without any fans in the stands, there were still some moments that reminded everyone why baseball is such a special sport.

One of them was when Rockies relief pitcher Daniel Bard, who hadn’t appeared in a Major League game since the 2013 season, managed to pick up his first win since May 29, 2012.

Bard entered the Rockies’ clash with the Texas Rangers in the fifth inning on Saturday, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out one batter.

After his team finished the game with a 3-2 victory, Bard was officially credited with a win for the first time in over eight years.

It was a long road for Bard, who found himself out of the league and without a job after struggling with control during 2012 and 2013 with the Red Sox. A victim of the “yips,” a psychological problem which can render pitchers incapable of hitting the strike zone due to a type of mental block, he spent years toiling in the Minor Leagues and with private coaches to help him get back to the Big Leagues.

His persistence was rewarded this spring after inking a deal with the Rockies, and he ended up making the team’s Opening Day roster in a development that would have been considered a miracle just a short time ago.

After his appearance and win on Saturday, Bard proved that persistence pays off.

Colorado Rockies are set to return this year without their two-time All-Star outfielder Ian Desmond. In an announcement posted on social media on Tuesday, Desmond revealed that he decided to sit out the 2020 MLB season.

According to Desmond, the concerns he has over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic caused him to make this decision.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has made this baseball season one that is a risk I am not comfortable taking,” Desmond wrote on Instagram. “But that doesn’t mean I’m leaving baseball behind for the year. I’ll be right here, at my old Little League, and I’m working with everyone involved to make sure we get Sarasota Youth Baseball back on track. It’s what I can do, in the scheme of so much.”

Desmond also explained that he wants to spend time with his family as they are expecting a new member.

“With a pregnant wife and four young children who have lots of questions about what’s going on in the world, home is where I need to be right now,” he added.

Ian Desmond joined the Rockies ahead of 2017 season, signing a five-year, $70 million contract with the organization. In the past three seasons, Desmond had a .261 batting average with 49 home runs and 193 RBIs.

Earlier in his career, Desmond also played with Washington Nationals and Texas Rangers. He has three Silver Slugger awards and was an All-Star in 2012 and 2016.

Colorado Rockies have been rather quiet on the free-agent market this offseason but still managed to make a big move over the weekend. According to reports, Rockies have agreed to a deal with their shortstop Trevor Story that will keep the 27-year-old All-Star with the organization for two more years. With this deal, the two sides managed to avoid the arbitration.

Story, who played 145 games with Colorado in 2019, hitting .294 with 35 home runs and 85 RBIs, inked a deal that will pay him $27.5 million. He will receive a $2 million signing bonus and is set to earn $8 million in 2020. His annual salary jumps to $17.5 million in 2021, after which he will become a free agent. Reportedly, the two sides haven’t discussed a long-term deal at any point.

Rockies are hoping that Story will help them bounce back from a disappointing campaign last season when they posted a 71-91 record and missed the playoffs. Their chances of doing so will, however, largely depend on the situation with star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Reportedly, Arenado is unhappy in Colorado and wants out, while the team would also consider trading him if the right offer comes along.

Trevor Story spent his entire career with the Rockies, where he made his MLB debut in 2016. Since then, he made two All-Star appearances and earned two Silver Slugger Awards. Story, who is the fastest shortstop in MLB history to reach 100 home runs, has a career .276 batting average with 123 homers and 347 RBIs.
