The Los Angeles Kings made a surprising move on Wednesday, trading away their legendary goaltender Jonathan Quick. The Kings will send Quick and a pair of picks to the Columbus Blue Jackets while receiving goalie Joonas Korpisalo and defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov in exchange.

The picks Blue Jackets are getting are a third-round selection in 2024 and a conditional first-round selection in 2023. The conditional pick conveys if the Kings make the playoffs and turns into two second-rounders if they don’t.

Quick spent his entire NHL career with the Kings and served as their starting goalkeeper for the past 15 seasons. During that run, he helped the franchise win its only two Stanley Cups in 2011-12 and 2013-14 while making the All-Star game three times, among other individual accolades. He has a career .911 save percentage with a 2.46 goal-against average and 57 shutouts.

While Quick made a case to be considered the greatest goalie in the Kings’ history, the 37-year-old player struggled mightily this season. In 31 games he played in 2022-23, he posted an 11-13-4 record while having a .876 SV and 3.50 GAA. With the LA team still having a shot at winning the Pacific Division, general manager Rob Blake decided to make a difficult decision and improve on the position with what will most likely go down as an unpopular move.

Columbus’ general manager Jarmo Kekalainen issued a statement after the deal was announced, hinting that his organization primarily had draft assets in mind.

“Jonathan Quick is a two-time Stanley Cup winner who has been an outstanding goaltender in our league for a long time, and this deal provides us with draft capital that will be valuable as we move forward as an organization,” Kekalainen said.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Patrik Laine picked up an ankle sprain and will therefore miss between three to four weeks of action, the team announced on Monday.

Laine injured his ankle during the Blue Jackets’ 3-4 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday when he collided with teammate Cole Sillinger during the third period. While both players stated that they were fine following the collision, Laine was spotted limping following his team’s win.

This will be the 24-year-old forward’s seconded extended absence this season. He incurred an elbow injury during the Blue Jackets’ opening game, leading to a six game absence. As a result, Laine has only appeared in eight games this season, scoring two goals and four points.

Laine was also plagued by injury setbacks last season, missing out on games as a result of two separate injuries.

Currently bottom of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference with a record of 4-9, the Blue Jackets will be hoping to overcome their injury woes in an attempt to turn their season around. Joining Laine on the sidelines is Zach Werenski, who is out for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder issue, and Adam Boqvist, Nick Blankenburg, Jakub Voracek, and Sean Kuraly.

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski is likely to be unavailable for the remainder of the regular season after suffering a separated shoulder and torn labrum.

Werenski suffered what was labeled an “upper-body injury” during the first period of his team’s 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. While the Blue Jackets were able to snap a five-game losing streak, this was also potentially Werenski’s final regular game of the season.

Prior to his injury, the star defenseman proved to be a dependable component of the Blue Jackets’ lineup, contributing three goals and eight points in 13 appearances. This sees him continuing his fine form from last season when he scored 48 points across 68 games.

Given his current performance stats, Werenski was expected to finish this regular season with a career-high 50 points had it not been for his injury setback. He is still tied for second on the Blue Jackets’ standings in terms of points and his 23 minutes, 25 seconds are the most on the team.

The Columbus Blue Jackets just snatched the top available free agent in the NHL. According to multiple reports, the Jackets agreed to a deal with Johnny Gaudreau, who inked a seven-year deal with the organization.

Gaudreau’s deal, which ties him to Columbus through the 2028-29 NHL season, is reportedly worth $9.75 million annually. He is coming off a career year in 2021-22 that saw him score 40 goals and add 75 assists for a career-high 115 points with the Calgary Flames.

Gaudreau spent his entire career with the Flames, and the franchise reportedly made a strong push to keep him in Canada. Their last offer was significantly more lucrative than the Columbus deal and would reportedly earn him $10.5 million annually on an eight-year- deal. But the 28-year-old player wanted to return to the United States and decided to leave money on the table in favor of the Blue Jackets deal.

Johnny Gaudreau played his first full NHL season in 2014-15 and immediately made a big impact on the Flames by providing 64 points and becoming the Calder Memorial Trophy finalist and an All-Star. In the following seven seasons, Gaudreau made five more All-Star Game appearances while also earning one NHL First All-Star Team nod. He has scored 210 goals and added 399 assists for a total of 609 points in the Flames’ uniform.

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced that unvaccinated forward Zac Rinaldo will not play for the team at the start of the new NHL season. While he remains under contract with the team, Rinaldo’s decision to remain unvaccinated against COVID-19 has resulted in him not being selected for the team. To date, Rinaldo is the only player on the Blue Jackets roster to not receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

Rinaldo, who was not invited to the team’s training camp last month, was initially expected to be sent to the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. After Rinaldo cleared waivers on Friday, the Blue Jackets announced that this plan would no longer happen.

While the NHL does not have a vaccine mandate in place, the Blue Jackets decided that their actions with regard to Rinaldo were in the best interest of the team. “Our position has been very clear that our organization is committed to doing everything we can to ensure the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff, and fans,” general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said.

NHL teams have the ability to suspend unvaccinated players without pay, however, the Blue Jackets will only suspend Rinaldo without docking his pay.

Columbus Blue Jackets assistant coach Sylvain Lefebvre has been dropped from his position in the team after refusing to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as per the team’s policy, Blue Jackets General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced.

“Per NHL protocol, he is unable to do the job we hired him for,” Kekalainen explained in a statement to the press. This follows the arrival of a memo from the NHL last month that stated that any person whose job requires them to be within 12 feet of club hockey operations personnel, including players, are to be fully vaccinated.

Steve McCarthy, who is currently the HAHL Cleveland Monsters associate coach, will be promoted to the Blue Jackets staff to serve as Lefebvre’s replacement.

Head coach Brad Larsen has expressed confidence in McCarthy’s ability to step up to the plate in his new role, explaining: “Steve has done a great job working with our young defensemen in Cleveland the past five years and is ready for this opportunity. He is a really bright, young coach with a great work ethic and I’m excited about what he will bring to our staff.”

Lefebvre is the second NHL assistant coach to leave his role as the result of COVID-19 vaccination policies. San Jose Sharks associate coach Rocky Thompson left the team due to a medical exemption that prevents him from receiving a vaccination.

The Columbus Blue Jackets will have to power through the next few weeks without arguably their best player on defense.

The team announced over the weekend that All-Star defenseman Zach Werenski is dealing with a lower-body injury and has been placed on the injured reserve list. The Blue Jackets expect the 23-year-old star to be out between one to two weeks.

Werenski was initially hurt last week in Columbus’ 4-3 win over the Dallas Stars. He exited the game in the fourth quarter after a hit from the Stars’ Alexander Radulov and didn’t return to the ice after that.

Zach Werenski has been one of the Blue Jackets’ most prominent stars in recent years, recording 41 plus points in consecutive seasons. He was especially productive during the 2019-20 NHL campaign, leading all defensemen in scoring with 20 goals. This was also Columbus’ single-season franchise record for a defenseman.

Werenski had a slower start of 2020-21 than expected and is currently on one goal and three assists in 12 games.

In Werenski’s absence, Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella is expected to rely on veteran Dean Kukan, who will be paired with Seth Jone as the first defense. Kukan has played 13 games this season, recording four points.

Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed restricted free agent Vladislav Gavrikov and now have an important piece in their defensive rotation under contract for the next three seasons.

The team confirmed the news on social media, revealing that Gavrikov will earn $2.8 million annually.

Gavrikov is coming off a solid rookie season in NHL in which he skated in 69 games while contributing with five goals and 13 assists. More importantly, he showed maturity on the ice and proved that he can be a reliable option behind All-Star Seth Jones and emerging star Zach Werenski.

“Vladislav Gavrikov was everything we hoped he would be during his rookie season last year, establishing himself as a top-four defenseman in the National Hockey League,” said Columbus general manager Jarmo Kekalainen announcing the deal. “He is still a young player that we expect will get better every year.”

Before coming to NHL, Gavrikov spent five years playing in Europe’s most prominent hockey competition KHL. He played 222 games with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl and SKA Saint Petersburg in KHL while recording 49 points (16 goals and 33 assists).

The 24-year-old player is also Russia’s international and was part of the country’s gold medal-winning squad at 2018’s Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Forward Max Domi completed a $10.6 million move to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, after being traded by the Montreal Canadiens the previous day. His new contract, valid for two years, has an average annual value of $5.6 million.

While Domi passed up the opportunity to become a restricted free agent on October 9, will be able to become and unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2021-22 season.

The 25-year-old forward impressed during the 2019-20 season, scoring 44 points (17 goals, 27 assists) in 71 games for the Canadiens.

Domi made the following comments after completing his trade, “I never like to compare teams or organizations, but Columbus is right there and it’s a team that’s ready to win a Stanley Cup. Playing in that rink (Nationwide Arena) is something that is very difficult. It’s a challenge. It’s very loud. The fans are unbelievable. … Everyone from the organization has reached out to me. It’s been first class. I got a call from [coach John Tortorella] and [general manager Jarmo Kekalainen] right away, so it’s pretty amazing to hear, and I’m just really excited about this next chapter and next challenge. We’ve got a special group and I’m just really looking forward to being a part of it.”

In return for Domi, the Canadiens received forward Josh Anderson as well as a third-round pick (No. 78) in the 2020 NHL Draft.
