The Dallas Cowboys have enjoyed an impressive 4-1 run without their starting quarterback Dak Prescott. But that doesn’t mean that they will be too patient about his return to the field.

Speaking with 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones said that Prescott would most likely be under center for Week 7 game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

“Well, let’s just say this: He’s determined to [play],” Jones said. “I think he’s, from my perspective, from what I can know and see, I think he’s going to get there. We feel like that physically, he’s at a position that the risk/reward justifies him being out there in terms of any reoccurrence of the injury.”

Prescott hurt his thumb in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and had to undergo surgery. It was expected that he will miss six to eight weeks due to the procedure, but the 29-year-old player managed to speed up his rehab process to the point that the Cowboys feel comfortable playing him earlier than expected.

Backup Cooper Rush stepped in for Prescott in Week 2 and went on to win four straight games as a starter. This prompted many to believe there will be QB controversy in Dallas once Prescott is fit enough to play. However, that doesn’t seem to be likely now since Rush struggled in last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and showed that he has significant limitations as a starter.

The Dallas Cowboys will not rush their starting quarterback Dak Prescott back to the field. According to Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy, Prescott started throwing the ball again but is unlikely to play in the Week 6 clash against NFC East rivals Philadelphia Eagles.

When asked about Prescott, who has been out with a thumb fracture since Week 1, McCarthy said that the 29-year-old player is progressing and will participate in Wednesday’s practice by throwing the ball to the receivers on the side. However, he also reiterated that Prescott is still considered to be in the “medical, rehab phase,” and that the team is planning for backup Cooper Rush to start in the Eagles game.

Prescott injured the thumb on his throwing hand in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was forced to undergo surgery. He was initially set to miss six to eight weeks, but recent reports indicated that the Pro Bowl signal-caller has been recovering faster than expected.

The Cowboys don’t have many reasons to hurry Prescott back on the field, especially since they are undefeated this season in the games he didn’t play. With Rush as their starting quarterback, the Cowboys are 4-0, and you can’t blame them for wanting to ride the hot hand.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott injured his right thumb during his team’s season-opening 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night. He is expected to undergo surgery on his injured thumb which is expected to rule him out of action for between six to eight weeks.

During the fourth quarter of the game, Prescott’s thumb hit the hand of Buccaneers’ outside linebacker Shaq Barrett while throwing a pass. Expected to be fitted with a pin and plate in order to stabilize the area, Prescott is scheduled to meet with the Cowboys’ hand specialist on Monday.

Initially believed to have jammed his finger, Prescott underwent an X-ray following the game, which revealed a fracture. “I was told it was much cleaner than it could have been,” Prescott said while wearing a splint on his right hand.

Coach Mike McCarthy said that Prescott’s injury was serious, indicating that it would also prove challenging in terms of team selection. Cooper Rush is expected to be the Cowboys’ starting quarterback next week as they face the Cincinnati Bengals.

Prescott, who is 2-5 in season openers, has completed 14-of-29 passes for 134 yards in his career.

The Dallas Cowboys continue to be cautious with their quarterback Dak Prescott as he works to regain fitness following ankle surgery. For this reason, Prescott will most likely sit out the entire preseason and will have his first game action after the injury in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed this while chatting with reporters on Wednesday.

“There’s a good chance he probably won’t play. Yes, that’s fair,” said McCarthy when asked whether Prescott will see any preseason action.

Prescott suffered a severe ankle injury early in the 2020 NFL season and had to miss the remainder of the campaign as a result. He recovered in time to participate in the training camp but suffered a setback after straining his shoulder during one practice. This forced the 28-year-old player to miss the majority of the team drills, and according to the Cowboys, he’s still working his way back to his usual throwing load.

“We’ll just continue the throwing regimen and keep building up the volume,” McCarthy explained Prescott’s situation.

Before the ankle injury, Prescott was on track to have a career season in 2020. In the five games he played, Prescott completed a career-high 68.0 percent of his throws while racking up 1,856 passing yards and nine touchdowns. He also added three TDs.

Despite the injury, the Cowboys decided to lock Prescott with the franchise for the foreseeable future. Earlier in the offseason, the two sides agreed to a four-year extension that is worth $160 million and comes with $126 million guaranteed.

Dallas Cowboys failed to sign their quarterback Dak Prescott to a long-term this offseason. But that doesn’t mean they will stop trying.

Cowboys’ executive vice president Stephen Jones recently told the team’s website that he believes that Prescott has a future in Dallas and that the two sides will “ultimately get a deal done.”

“So we’re fired up about it and still have nothing but 100 percent belief in Dak and his future with the Cowboys, and that we can ultimately get a deal done,” said Jones. “He’s special. As Jerry [Jones] and I have said, we are 110 percent behind him, and ultimately feel like we’ll get this done.”

Prescott and Dallas spent the offseason negotiating and even met on the deadline day (July 15th) for franchise-tagged players to sign extensions. However, according to Jones, the two sides just couldn’t make that final step.

“We didn’t quite get it done,” he added. “I wouldn’t put blame on either side. It’s just one of those things when you’re talking about a deal as big as this is ¬– for our team, not just for Dak but our entire team, the ramifications that it has – we certainly want to get it done right.”

Reportedly, the main issue was that Dak Prescott asked for a four-year deal that would reset the QB market. Dallas, on the other hand, wanted a five-year deal and offered lower guarantees compared to what the 27-year-old player’s camp deemed acceptable.

Prescott signed his franchise tag back in June and will play in 2020 on a $31.4 million salary. He is set to become a free agent in 2021 unless Cowboys tag him again, or two sides agree on an extension.

Dallas Cowboys will now officially have quarterback Dak Prescott under center for the 2020 NFL season. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Prescott will sign his franchise tender with Cowboys by Monday and will contractually commit himself to play with the organization this season.

Prescott’s rookie deal expired in March, but the Cowboys placed a $31.4 million exclusive franchise tag on the 26-year-old quarterback to ensure that he can’t sign with another team. The two sides have been working on a long-term deal for a while now, but continue to be quite apart in terms of the contract.

By signing his tender, Prescott secures himself a salary for this year while sending a message that he doesn’t intend to use a hold-out as a way to force a contract extension he wants. He and Cowboys still have until July 15th to get a deal done, which would in return void the tag.

ESPN’s Ed Werder followed up on Schefter’s report by saying that Prescott’s decision to sign his tender isn’t an indication that he might be closing to a deal with Cowboys.

Recent reports indicated that Cowboys’ latest contract offer to Dak Prescott included a yearly salary between $34 million and $35 million and would make him among the highest-paid NFL quarterbacks. Prescott, on the other hand, is asking a deal that is closer to $40 million annually. The two sides are reportedly also off in terms of contract length.

Prescott is coming off a career season in which he had 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns. However, despite his high production, he failed to lead the Cowboys to playoffs as they finished second in the NFC East with 8-8 record.

Earlier this month, Dallas Cowboys decided to use the franchise tag on their quarterback Dak Prescott and make sure that he doesn’t hit the free agency. And while the tag ensures that Prescott remains on the Cowboys’ roster for 2020, it seems like both sides are keen on securing a long-term commitment.

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Cowboys and Prescott resumed the contract negotiations once again in the past couple of days. This is the first time that they have had a discussion following the 26-year-old signal caller’s decision to reject Dallas’ reported offer of $33 million a year just ahead of the start of free agency.

Reportedly, the money isn’t such a big issue in the negotiations as the length of the contract. Cowboys are pushing for a five-year deal, while Prescott’s camp is trying to get the deal down to four years.

Thanks to the fact that they used an exclusive franchise tag, Dallas Cowboys now have until July 15th to work out a deal with Dak Prescott, while the player is unable to talk with other teams. In case that there is no agreement until then, contract talks can’t be resumed until the next offseason, while Prescott will spend 2020 playing on a $26.8 million salary.

Prescott had a career year in 2019, throwing for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns. However, these good performances didn’t translate to wins, so the Cowboys managed to retain significant leverage in these negotiations. It remains to be seen whether that leverage will be enough for the player to accept their terms now, or whether Prescott will make another bet on himself in 2020.

Dallas Cowboys didn’t manage to agree on a long-term deal with quarterback Dak Prescott so far, but no other team will get a chance to it either. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cowboys decided to use an exclusive tag on Prescott on Monday.

By placing an exclusive tag on Prescott, who was set to become a free agent this offseason, Cowboys give themselves time to July 15th to get the player to sign an extension. In case that the two sides don’t agree to a long-term contract, the 26-year-old signal-caller will spend 2020 playing on a tag. The most important thing for Dallas is that Prescott won’t be able to negotiate with other teams thanks to it.

According to reports from the past week, Dak Prescott and Dallas Cowboys are still not close to getting on the same terms. Cowboys sent Prescott a new offer at some point in recent weeks, with the number being north of $33 million a year and placing him in the top five most paid QBs in the league. The player, however, is believed to be demanding an offer closer to $40 million and wants to reset the market.

The decision to tag Prescott also affects some other Cowboys’ plans. Considering that the new CBA only allows one tag per team, Dallas is now forced to let Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper test the free agency. The organization is expected to be aggressive in their pursuit, but it remains to be seen whether they’ll manage to outbid some other WR-needy teams.

Quarterback Dak Prescott isn’t giving the Dallas Cowboys a discount in negotiations over his contract extensions. And Prescott is looking to be the highest-paid player in NFL history.

According to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, Prescott recently rejected the $30 million per year offer from the Cowboys and instead wants $40 million annually. The biggest per-year-average of all time is currently at $35 million, which is the amount that Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson receives according to his new deal.

Since $40 million per year is an unrealistic number for a player of Prescott’s caliber, it’s possible that his agent countered with this offer so they could meet in the middle. But if the 26-year-old doesn’t get his extension this year, the number could turn into a reality in 2019.

Yahoo Sports senior NFL writer Charles Robinson reports that if the two sides can’t come to an agreement, Dak Prescott will bet on himself and play out the final year of his rookie deal. If Prescott ends up taking a step forward and also leads the Cowboys to Super Bowl appearance in 2019, his agent will then make the $40 million a minimum.

Prescott was hugely successful during his time with Dallas Cowboys, leading the team to two playoff appearances in three years. Still, he isn’t considered to be in the upper echelon of NFL QBs, as Cowboys’ good form was attributed to his productive supporting cast.
