The reunion between the Dallas Cowboys and their former star running back Ezekiel Elliott seems to be on the cards this offseason. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Cowboys and Elliott have been recently engaged in talks about a deal for the 2024 NFL season.

Fowler points out that nothing has been finalized but that both sides are open to the possibility.

The move would be beneficial for both sides. The Cowboys are currently lacking a lead running back after letting last year’s starter Tony Pollard walk in free agency. Elliott, on the other hand, is looking to land a job that would give him an opportunity to play meaningful snaps while Dallas is also the place where he played his best football.

Elliott was drafted by the Cowboys as the fourth overall pick in 2016 and spent the first seven years of his pro career with the franchise. During that time, he made the Pro Bowl three times while leading the league in rushing twice. However, a combination of bloated contract and declining productivity prompted the Cowboys to release him after the 2022 campaign.

After spending months on the open market last offseason, Elliott reached a one-year deal with the New England Patriots. In a backup role with the Pats, Elliott rushed for 642 yards and three touchdowns while also adding 51 receptions for 313 receiving yards and two scores.

The Dallas Cowboys might enter the training camp without one of their best players being present. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cowboys’ All-Pro guard Zack Martin is unhappy with his current contract and might not report to training camp.

Martin believes that he is “woefully underpaid relative to the market” and is considering a holdout because the Cowboys showed no interest in improving his contract.

Martin is considered one of the best, if not the best, guards in the NFL today. He has made the First Team All-Pro six times, including two past seasons, and has eight Pro Bowls on his resume. The 32-year-old player has also been quite durable, missing only six games in the last four years.

Despite his accomplishments, Martin is nowhere near the top paid guards in the league. He is set to earn around $13.3 million in 2023, which comes well below the earnings of the NFL’s highest-paid guards like Atlanta Falcons’ Chris Lindstrom ($20.5 million per year) and Indianapolis Colts’ Quenton Nelson  ($20 million per year).

Martin currently has two years left on the seven-year, $93.41 million contract he signed back in 2018.

The Dallas Cowboys’ hesitance to rework Martin’s contract might have to do something with their efforts to lock several other important players on long-term deals this offseason. The franchise is reportedly looking to give extensions to Pro Bowler wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and Pro Bowler cornerback Trevon Diggs before the season starts.

After their Super Bowl trip last season, the Philadelphia Eagles are entering the 2023 campaign as a team to beat in the NFC. But Pro Bowl defensive end Demarcus Lawrence doesn’t believe the Eagles are that much better than his Dallas Cowboys.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Lawrence said that the Cowboys are much closer to the Eagles than most other people think.

“I don’t feel like it’s a huge gap at all,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence feels that the Cowboys team that finished 2022 with a 12-5 record will be even better this season and give the Eagles a run for their money in NFC East.

“I feel like through this time right now, when we headed to training camp, that we made those adjustments, we learned those different things that we need to learn about our teammates so we can fully function the way we should out there on the field,” he added.

Despite the Eagles getting to an 8-0 start last season, the Cowboys did a good job in keeping up. They split the head-to-head series, and the NFC East title ended up coming down to a wire.

However, the Eagles performed much better in the postseason, where they made a dominant run through the NFC and suffered a narrow 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys, on the other hand, ended their playoff run in the divisional round, where they fell to the San Francisco 49ers.

Veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks finally got his wish of leaving the Houston Texans. Cooks is heading to the Dallas Cowboys, who are sending a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 sixth-rounder to Houston in exchange.

The Cowboys attempted to trade for Cooks last season, but the two teams couldn’t find a path to a deal. They recently resumed talks and managed to get on the same page after the Texans accepted to pay $6 million of the player’s $18 million salary in 2013.

Cooks told the Texans that he wanted out last season as he didn’t want to be a part of a rebuild. He finished the campaign with 57 catches for 699 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

“Beyond blessed and can’t wait to go be special for the star! Very thankful for the Jones family for this opportunity for my family and I,” Cooks told ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime after the deal was made official.

The Cowboys have been on the market for a dependable wide receiver for a while now, lacking options behind star wideout CeeDee Lamb. The team traded away Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns last season while Michael Gallup went down with a torn ACL. Cooks, who has 630 career catches, should solve this problem.

There were reports that Dallas is also targeting Odell Beckham Jr in free agency, with team owner Jerry Jones publicly expressing his interest in the Pro Bowler. However, sources close to the team say that the Cowboys won’t pursue Beckham now that they got Cooks.

The Dallas Cowboys will keep running back Tony Pollard, their leading rusher in 2022, with the franchise for at least one more year. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Cowboys decided to place a franchise tag on Pollard, guaranteeing him a salary of $10.09 million for 2023.

Pollard had a career year this past season despite making only four starts for the Cowboys. He finished the campaign with 1,007 rushing yards and nine touchdowns while also adding 39 catches for 371 receiving yards and three TDs. The 25-year-old player got his first Pro Bowl nod as a result.

While the franchise tag secures Pollard doesn’t hit free agency this offseason, the Cowboys reportedly still want to lock him on a long-term deal. The two sides have been actively negotiating and are expected to continue talks in the upcoming weeks.

Pollard entered the league in 2019 as a fourth-round pick out of Memphis. In his four seasons as a pro, he has 2,616 rushing yards and 17 TDs on the ground. The 25-year-old player is currently nursing a high ankle sprain and fractured fibula, which he suffered in NFC divisional playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers, but is expected to return in time for training camp.

Having committed significant money to Pollard for this upcoming season, Dallas now needs to make a decision about franchise star Ezekiel Elliott. Considering Elliott’s declining ability, his $16.72 million cap hit doesn’t make sense for the Cowboys, and they will likely either cut the three-time Pro Bowler or try to get him to agree on a significant pay cut.

The Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard suffered a fracture to the fibula in his left leg during his team’s 12-19 playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the Cowboys confirmed.

Pollard suffered the injury with 1:24 left in the first half when he rolled up after making a catch. Upon being helped to the sideline, the Cowboys’ medical staff decided to escort Pollard back to the locker room where he was to undergo an X-ray. As a result, he was ruled out of the rest of the game.

“That hurt,” teammate Dak Prescott said of Pollard’s injury. “Just a guy that brings so much to our offense, brings so much to our team. His energy. His energy on the sideline, in the huddle, the way he gets guys going.”

While Ezekiel Elliot and rookie Malik Davis filled in for the Pro Bowl player, the Cowboys were unable to claw their way back, thereby losing the game and bringing their season to an end.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, Pollard has come off of the best season of his career, scoring 12 touchdowns and making 1,007 yards on 193 carries in 16 regular-season games.

The Dallas Cowboys signed a veteran wide receiver on Monday, but it wasn’t the signing everyone expected. Instead of Odell Beckham Jr., the Cowboys went and added four-time Pro Bowler T.Y. Hilton.

Reportedly, Hilton inked a deal until the end of the season that will see him earn $600,000 in guaranteed money. He can earn up to $1.8 million if the Cowboys make a deep playoff run and he hits some other incentives.

The Cowboys have been looking to add depth to their wideout corps for a while, with Beckham being their first choice. The franchise even hosted the star free agent for a visit but let him walk away without a deal due to concerns over his health. Beckham, who suffered a torn ACL in Super Bowl LVI, reportedly still isn’t back to 100 percent and Dallas believed he couldn’t make a contribution this season.

Hilton isn’t electric as Beckham, but he has safe hands and should be a reliable target for Dak Prescott. With CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup shouldering most of the offense, the 33-year-old player won’t be asked to do too much and can pick his spots.

“As a veteran he knows ball. He’s really, really smart,” said Cowboys’ offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. “To have a guy like that, he’ll be able to handle the transition really, really well and provide some depth. We’ll see where all the roles transpire.”

T.Y. Hilton spent his entire professional career with the Indianapolis Colts, where he made 631 catches for 9,691 receiving yards and 53 touchdowns over the course of 10 years. Hilton struggled with injuries in 2021, playing just 10 games and managing only 23 receptions for 331 yards and three TDs. The Colts ended up deciding not to extend his contract at the end of the campaign.

The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants have both expressed an interest in obtaining the signature of free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. This news adds extra intrigue as the two teams gear up to face each other on Thursday evening.

Beckham has been unattached since leaving the Los Angeles Rams at the conclusion of the 2021 season. Instead, he has been using his off time to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament that he suffered in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory. Beckham notably scored the first touchdown of the game before going off injured in the second quarter.

Cowboys quarterback Dax Prescott has been open about his team’s interest in Beckham, commenting: “He knows how much I want him here, and a lot of these guys in this locker room I’ve seen have reached out on their own in different ways to making sure that he understands that this is a team that he can help.”

According to reports, Beckham is expected to wait until after Thanksgiving to decide on his future. Other teams who are in the mix to sign the player include the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the San Francisco 49ers.

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot remains a doubt for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears after suffering a hyperextended right knee. Elliot did not participate in training on Wednesday and Thursday and was absent from the team’s walkthrough on Friday in favor of resistance training and rehab.

According to coach Mike McCarthy, Elliot could have a slim chance of playing on the weekend if he manages to remain on track with his recovery process. “I mean he’s doing a lot better than we anticipated. But if he practices tomorrow, then he’d have a chance of playing.”

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones added that although Elliot would most likely not play in Sunday’s game, he could possibly return considering the team’s bye next week. “I’m not so sure we’d have done it this way had we not had the bye,” Jones stated, adding that, “we’ll see how he is responding as the week goes along, but if we don’t use him, this is just too great of a time to get him in top shape.”

Should Elliot not play, Tony Pollard is likely to take over his running back duties with Malik Davis and Qadree Ollison receiving callups from the practice squad as reserves.

Despite having one of the best overall defenses in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys have struggled to contain the run so far this season. In an attempt to address this issue, the franchise worked out a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders that will see them land veteran defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins.

According to an announcement made by the Cowboys on Tuesday, the team gave up a 2023 sixth-round pick to acquire Hankins. As part of the trade, the Raiders are also sending a seventh-rounder in 2024 to Dallas.

Hankins has played sparingly this season, spending less than 50 percent of the snaps in each of his five appearances. He has 10 tackles, one QB hit, and one pass deflection in 2022.

While Hankins isn’t expected to make a significant difference for the Cowboys, he will add size to their defensive front and should make it more efficient against the opposing running backs. Dallas has allowed 4.4 yards per carry this season, which is enough for 20th in the league in run defense.

Johnathan Hankins started his pro career as a second-round pick with the New York Giants in 2013. He spent four years with the Giants and had a one-season stint with the Indianapolis Colts before landing with the Raiders. Hankins has 337 tackles and 14.5 sacks on his NFL resume.
