Former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn will reportedly join Mike McCarthy’s staff with the Dallas Cowboys as a defensive coordinator. Quinn will replace Mike Nolan, who left the position early in 2021.

Quinn was unemployed since October when the Falcons fired him and general manager Thomas Dimitroff after a 0-5 start to the season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Quinn agreed to a three-year deal that should keep him with the franchise through 2023. Dallas previously also locked down offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to a similar contract.

The Cowboys hope that Dan Quinn, who famously served as DC and play-caller for the Seattle Seahawks’ Legion of Boom, can bring a new life to the team’s anemic defense. Dallas had a disastrous season on that side of the ball, allowing 473 points (most in franchise history) while also having the second-worst run defense in the league in 2020.

Quinn spent the majority of his career working as a defensive coach, serving in multiple roles with the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, NY Jets, and Seahawks. He was hired as the Falcons’ head coach in 2015.

During his time in Atlanta, Quinn led the Falcons to two playoffs and a Super Bowl LI appearance. He has a 43-42 head coaching record.

After starting the season with five straight losses, the Atlanta Falcons have made a decision to fire their head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

In just three years, Quinn went from taking the Falcons to the Super Bowl to being known as the coach who lets his team constantly blow huge leads. That all started in Super Bowl LI when the Falcons were leading the New England Patriots 28-3 in the second half and ended up losing the game.

It seems that Quinn and the Falcons were never able to fully recover from that devastating loss. The Falcons have been starting slowly in all of their last three seasons, but a surge in the second half of the 2019 season helped Quinn to save his job temporarily.

However, the writing was on the wall after Quinn and the Falcons once against blew big leads in the second and third week of the 2020 season to the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears. And after starting 0-5, there was no salvaging Quinn’s job.

The Falcons have yet to announce who will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season, which Atlanta already views as a lost one.

Gone with Quinn is Dimitroff as well, with Falcons President Rich McKay expected to oversee football operations until a new GM is hired.
