The San Francisco 49ers must feel much better about their chances against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship game. The 49ers’ star wideout Deebo Samuel has been cleared to practice and is expected to play on Sunday.

Samuel’s status for the Lions game was up in the air earlier in the week due to a shoulder injury suffered in the Divisional Round win over the Green Bay Packers. The 28-year-old ended up missing the practice on Wednesday and was a limited participant on Thursday.

However, according to San Francisco’s head coach, Kyle Shanahan, a medical team has now cleared Samuel, and he is ready to go.

“It’s huge,” Shanahan said. “A little scary at the beginning of the week, but the fact he was able to go full-go today and no restrictions on him is definitely a good thing for us.”

Having Deebo Samuel on the pitch will be huge for the 49ers. Samuel has been a difference-maker for the team throughout the regular season, even if his numbers haven’t been eye-catching. He had 60 catches for 892 yards and seven touchdowns while also adding 225 yards and five TDs on the ground.

Samuel managed to make only two catches for 24 yards last week against the Packers before having to exit the contest.

The San Francisco 49ers finally caved and paid their best offensive player from 2021. According to reports, the 49ers signed star wide receiver Deebo Samuel to a three-year, $73.5 million extension over the weekend.

The 49ers confirmed the deal on Monday, but the franchise failed to disclose the financial terms of the agreement.

With an average annual salary of $24.5 million, Samuel has now become one of the highest-paid receivers in the game. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the deal also comes with $58.1 million in guarantees. The number is in the same range that his fellow 2019 NFL Draft classmate DK Metcalf received from the Seattle Seahawks last week.

Samuel receiving a new deal is an end of a lengthy offseason saga that almost caused the South Carolina prospect to leave the franchise. After receiving the First-team All-Pro honors and breaking the NFL records for the most rushing touchdowns by a receiver in 2021, the 26-year-old player entered the offseason looking for a new contract that would reflect his value to the team. The 49ers were hesitant to break the bank right away, causing the player to submit a trade request in April.

While San Francisco answered a few calls from interested teams, the front office made it clear that they wanted to keep Samuel long-term. The 49ers used to following months to bridge the gap with their star player and eventually managed to hammer out a deal.

Since entering the league, Samuel made 167 catches for 2,598 yards and 10 TDs. He also has 550 rushing yards and 11 rushing scores.

The wideout market in the NFL exploded this summer after several high-profile wide receivers, including Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill, inked the record-breaking deals. But that might not be the end of it, as a number of young star WRs are also reportedly looking to get paid.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, WRs Deebo Samuel (San Francisco 49ers), A.J. Brown (Tennessee Titans), and Terry McLaurin (Washington Commanders) all want new contracts and they are willing to miss off-season programs in order to make ir happen. All three players were selected in the second or third round of the 2019 NFL Draft and have one year left on their respective deals.

DK Metcalf, another star receiver from the 2019 class, is also looking for an extension from the Seattle Seahawks, but it is believed he won’t hold out.

Samuel had a breakthrough season in 2021, emerging as one of the unique offensive weapons in the league. He had 77 catches for 1,405 yards and six receiving touchdowns. On top of that, the 26-year-old player also rushed for 364 yards and eight TDs, with the latter being an NFL record for a wideout. The South Carolina product earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors last season.

On the other hand, Brown made an immediate impact for the Titans and has been their No. 1 wideout since his rookie year. Upon entering the league, he had consecutive 1,000+ yards seasons before injuries limited him to 13 games and 869 receiving yards in 2021. The 24-year-old player was a Pro Bowler in 2020.

Terry McLaurin, selected in the third round out of Ohio, has been one of the rare bright spots for the struggling Commanders’ team in recent years. He had 1,053 receiving yards and five TDs in 2021.

After breaking his foot during a workout in June, San Francisco 49ers’ wideout Deebo Samuel was optimistic that he’d get back to action in time for the start of 2020 NFL season. However, according to 49ers’ general manager John Lynch, this won’t be the case.

Speaking with KNBR on Tuesday, Lynch admitted that Samuel “may well miss some games” this season.

“Deebo was really working,” said Lynch. “That’s the wonderful thing about this kid. He has a desire to be great. A freak deal. A blow. Might we be whiteout him at beginning of the season? Yes. Fair to say he may well miss some games early in the year.”

In Samuel’s absence, 49ers’ will have to rely on their 2020 first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk to do the heavy lifting early. Head coach Kyle Shannahan’s other options on the position include Dante Pettis, Jalen Hurd, and Trent Taylor. Hurd and Taylor both missed 2019 with injuries, but are expected to be in full form this year.

Deebo Samuel had a successful rookie campaign in 2019, playing 15 games with 11 starts in the regular season. He had 57 receptions for 802 yards and three touchdowns en route to PFF All-Rookie Team selection.

Samuel was also a big contributor for San Francisco in the postseason, setting the Super Bowl record for most rushing yards by a wide receiver with his 53 yards run in Super Bowl LIV.
