Buffalo Bills’ veteran quarterback Derek Anderson is retiring from professional football. Although Anderson signed one-year extension with the Bills in December, he now informed the team that he is ending his career after 14 seasons in the NFL.

Anderson thought about retiring in 2018, but ended up signing with the Bills as a backup and mentor to their rookie QB Josh Allen. After Allen went down with an injury in the middle of the season, the 35-year-old stepped in and played two games as a starter, completing 60 percent of his passes for 456 yards.

The news about Anderson’s retirement was confirmed by Buffalo’s general manager Brandon Beane.

“We appreciate what he did. He came into a tough spot. He was thrown into action quicker than we anticipated. He did a good job,” – said Beane in a statement. “Obviously what he brought to Josh, I think Josh will be able to take those things with him throughout his career. I regretted that it took me that long to get it done. But when we did, I was thankful for Derek’s time here. He was really a great resource for Josh and Matt Barkley and [offensive coordinator Brian] Daboll.”

Derek Anderson, who was a sixth round pick in 2005, spent the majority of his career with Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers, while also having stints with Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals before coming to Buffalo. Anderson threw for 10,878 yards and 60 touchdowns in his career and has a one Pro Bowl appearance to his name.
