The post Derrick Rose to Become a Free Agent After Knicks Didn’t Pick Up His $15.6 Million Option appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, the Knicks are still interested in bringing Rose back on a smaller contract.
Rose didn’t play much this past season, falling out of Knicks’ rotation at the start of the season. He only appeared in 27 games and averaged 5.6 points on 12.5 minutes per game.
Despite this, Rose is expected to receive interest from teams around the league, especially if he is willing to play on a minimum contract. In recent years, the 35-year-old showed that he could be a valuable role player, capable of running the second unit and providing burst from the bench.
One destination that is being mentioned is the Chicago Bulls, where Rose started his career. With Lonzo Ball being ruled out for the entire 2023-24 season, the Bulls could use a veteran like Rose to provide them depth in the guard position.
Rose was drafted by the Bulls as the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He spent seven years in Chicago, winning an NBA MVP award in 2011 and earning three All-Star nods.

]]>According to NBA Insider Chris Haynes, the Phoenix Suns are interested in adding Rose to their roster if he ends up securing a contract buyout with the Knicks. Rose is in the second year of a three-year, $43.5 million contract he signed in 2021, but the final year of the deal is a club option.
Haynes reports that the Suns are interested in Rose as they want to add another ball handler ahead of what they expect will be a deep playoff run. Phoenix is considered to be among the main contenders to win an NBA title this season after acquiring superstar Kevin Duran in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets earlier this month.
Derrick Rose played a limited role with the Knicks to start the season, averaging 5.8 points in 12.9 minutes per game before falling out of the rotation completely. He hasn’t been on the floor since the win over the Houston Rockets in late December.
The Knicks attempted to trade Rose ahead of the NBA trade deadline but failed to find a deal that would suit both sides. The organization reportedly didn’t want to send Rose to any team out of respect for everything that he did for the franchise.

]]>In a recent piece published on The Athletic, Shams Charania reported that Rose has emerged as a trade target for the NY Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers in recent weeks. Charania points out that neither the Pistons nor Rose showed urgency to part ways but that this won’t stop the player’s suitors from trying.
The Knicks interest in Rose isn’t surprising, considering they are coached by Tom Thibodeau, who previously worked with the 32-year-old veteran in Chicago and Minnesota. Reportedly, Thibodeau would like to get Rose on his team once again and is pushing strongly for the trade.
The Clippers, on the other hand, are always on the market for a point guard. Picking Derrick Rose ahead of other candidates would make sense since he’s on an expiring contract and might not cost them too much. Also, he would immediately make them an even more dangerous team and strengthen their status as a challenger for the top of the Western Conference.
Rose has had a solid start of the 2020-21 season, averaging 14.8 points and 4.6 assists per game.

]]>Lakers already tried to get Rose around the February deadline, but they couldn’t work out a deal with the Pistons. Various scenarios were mentioned at the time, including one that would see Lakers deal Alex Caruso and a draft pick to Detroit, but the deal never moved past exploratory talks.
This time around, however, the two sides are “much more likely” to make a deal. One NBA general manager told Deveney that circumstances changed, and it’s in both teams’ interest to try and get on the same page.
Pistons are in the full rebuild and would like to give their young guys a chance and see where they stand. Having Derrick Rose on board surely helps from a veteran leadership standpoint, but he could bring back some assets that the team could use during rebuilding. Rose himself would probably be interested in the move, as he is at the point of his career when he would like to play on a contending team rather than miss out on playoffs for the next two or three years.
Lakers, on the other hand, know that they face a big challenge if they want to repeat. Their bench was already thin during this championship run and could be even thinner with Rajon Rondo and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope opting out of their deal. By getting Rose, they could fill in the void while having a legitimate starting option in case of injuries.
After several years of injury struggles and inconsistency, Rose has bounced back to rediscover his touch. He played 50 games with the Pistons in 2019/20, averaging 18.1 points and 5.6 assists.
