The Cleveland Browns will be starting fresh at the quarterback position after four up-and-down seasons with Baker Mayfield. The franchise just confirmed the acquisition of Pro Bowl signal-caller Deshaun Watson, who is coming to Cleveland in a trade with the Houston Texans.

In order to get Watson, the Browns gave up significant draft assets. They will send the Texans their first-round picks in 2022 (No. 13), 2023, and 2024 alongside third-round selection in 2023 and fourth-rounder in 2024.

As part of the trade, Watson will also receive a new contract. The deal is for five years and $230 million, all of which is guaranteed. This is the largest guaranteed contract ever given to an NFL player and makes him the second-highest-paid QB in the league in terms of average annual salary. The Browns gave the 26-year-old player a new deal despite the fact that he had a four-year, $177.5 million extension, signed with the Texans in 2020, starting this season.

Deshaun Watson asked to be traded last offseason, becoming disgruntled in Houston after the franchise didn’t consider his inputs during their search for a new general manager and head coach. The Clemson product spent the 2021 season with the Texans regardless, since interested teams were cautious about trading for Watson due to his off-the-field issues and steep asking price. However, the weak QB class in this year’s draft and lack of veteran options caused some of his suitors to change their minds.

Thanks to a no-trade clause in his contract, Watson had a big say in his next destination. He eventually shortlisted his options to the New Orleans Saints, the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers, and the Browns, meeting with each team in person. The Saints and the Falcons were considered the favorites towards the end of the process, but Cleveland’s contract offer proved to be enough to shift the odds in their favor.

The Browns made several other QB-related moves in the past couple of days, trading backup Case Keenum and bringing in veteran Jacoby Brissett. They are also expected to trade last year’s starter and former No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield in the coming weeks.

The Houston Texans are unlikely to field their disgruntled quarterback Deshaun Watson anytime soon if ever again. But this doesn’t mean that the organization is willing to take any offer just to send him out of town.

According to Houston Chronicle‘s John McClain, the Texans want to accommodate Watson’s trade request but are also willing to play the waiting game. He also adds that the player won’t be moved until new general manager Nick Caserio receives “the offer he wants.”

The Houston Texans signed Deshaun Watson to a massive four-year, $177.5 million contract extension a year ago, and it seemed the franchise is finally settled on the quarterback position for years to come. However, a disappointing 2020 NFL campaign and organizational changes put a strain on the relationship between the two sides.

Reportedly, Watson was unhappy for not being included in the search for a new general manager and felt like he is not valued by the organization. Shortly after the start of the offseason, the 25-year-old player submitted an official trade request.

The Texans initially tried to mend the relationship, but after a while, the franchise started listening to the trade calls. Still, neither team was ready to offer a combination of multiple first-round draft picks and star players that Houston wants.

In his four seasons in the league, Deshaun Watson earned three Pro Bowl nods and led the Houston Texans to a 28-25 record as a starter. He currently has the NFL-record 67.8 percent passing completion while throwing for 14,539 yards and 104 touchdowns.

The Houston Texans remain confident that they can convince star quarterback Deshaun Watson to reconsider the trade request he made a few weeks ago. But in case they are forced to let the Pro Bowler go, the Texans want a ransom-type package in return.

Houston Chronicle NFL reporter John McClain recently shared a type of a deal that Texans would consider for Watson. According to him, the organization seeks at least two first-round picks, two second-rounders, and two young defensive players that can start right away.

The Texans’ steep price isn’t surprising at all, and the final package could become even more lucrative if they manage to kick-start a bidding war between the teams. Watson is one of the top five quarterbacks in the league and is only entering his fifth NFL season. He also just had a career-season, throwing for a career-high 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns while also rushing for 444 yards and three scores.

There is no doubt that he can play at a high level for at least a decade longer, so teams won’t be too cautious about surrendering assets to get him.

The issue for the Texans is that Watson has a no-trade clause, which greatly limits their market. The team that could give Houston all they want and probably more is the New York Jets, but it’s unclear whether the player will have an interest in swapping one dysfunctional situation for another one.

Other suitors include the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, and Carolina Panthers.

Houston Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson is reportedly unhappy with the franchise and would like to be traded. According to sources close to the organization, Watson’s preferred destination at this point would be the Miami Dolphins.

The biggest reason why Watson would like out of Houston was the Texans’ decision to ignore his input in the search for a new general manager and head coach.

Watson was promised that he’d get a say in the process, but the team went on to hire New England Patriots executive Nick Caserio as a GM without consulting with the player. The team also failed to interview Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, despite the fact that he was Watson’s preferred choice.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport now reports that Watson decided to give the Texans a silent treatment and is not returning their calls.

Deshaun Watson inked a four-year, $177.5 million extension with the Texans back in September and got a no-trade clause as part of the deal. This ultimately gives him a final say on his next team if he ends up pushing for a trade.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported earlier this week that Watson has Miami at the top of his list and might be interested in moving to Florida if the Dolphins include rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the deal.

Despite all of this, it would be hard to see the Texans parting way with Watson. He is a generational talent, and any package that they receive from the Dolphins or any other team would probably not be enough to compensate for the things he brings to the team.

The best way for the Texans to move forward would be to repair their relationship with Watson and commit to giving him more input in the head coaching search.

Houston Texans are doing everything they can to lock their franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson for the foreseeable future. According to ESPN, the Texans already picked up Watson’s fifth-year option while trying to get a long-term deal done as well.

Watson, who was a first-round pick in 2017, is eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason. If he ends up signing one, the expectations are that he will reset the QB market. Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson currently holds the record for the highest annual average with $35 million a year while LA Rams’ Jared Goff has the most guaranteed money with $110 million.

Texans reportedly already engaged in “preliminary” discussions with Watson’s camp and are expected to continue talks in the future. The 24-year-old signal-caller earned $3.8 million in 2019 while he is expected to get $4.4 million in 2020.

If they managed to sign Watson to an extension this year, it would be Houston’s second big deal done this offseason. They previously inked offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil on a record-breaking three-year, $66 million contract extension.

During his three years in NFL, DeShaun Watson earned two Pro Bowl selections while leading the Texans to two playoff appearances. Watson finished 2019 by completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,852 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also added 413 rushing yards and seven rushing TDs.
