The Detroit Pistons are reportedly pursuing Monty Williams to become their new head coach. According to a report by The Athletic, the Pistons hope to lure Williams with a contract that would make him one of the highest-paid head coaches in the NBA.

The Pistons are willing to give Williams a five-year deal with an average salary of $10 million per season. The 51-year-old coach is currently considering the offer, but it remains to be seen whether that will be enough to convince him to come to Detroit.

Williams spent the previous four seasons with the Phoenix Suns, leading the franchise to four playoff trips and NBA Finals appearance. He has been the coach with the most wins in the league since 2021, but the Suns decided to fire him following a disappointing Conference Semifinals exit this postseason.

It is believed that Williams initially wanted to take a year off before taking a new job. However, Detroit believes they can get him to change his mind with a lucrative salary and opportunity to coach a talented team that includes former No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham.

The Pistons are looking for a new head coach since Dwayne Casey moved to the front office role at the end of the 2022-23 regular season. If they are rejected by Williams, Detroit is expected to pursue Milwaukee Bucks’ associate head coach Charles Lee and Overtime Elite coach Kevin Ollie.

Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey announced on Sunday that he will be stepping down from his position. Instead, he will be moving to a front-office role with the team.

Casey’s move comes after the Pistons were defeated 103-81 by the Chicago Bulls during their final game of the season. With a 17-65 record and a 15th-place finish in the Eastern Conference standings, the team’s season drew to a premature close.

“Tom is giving me an opportunity to move into the front office,” Casey announced, referring to Pistons owner Tom Gores. “I’m excited to go to the next phase of my life. Time to spend more time with my family. This team is on the right track. They probably need to hear a new voice. This is my decision.”

Over his five seasons coaching the Pistons, Casey has only managed to lead the team to the playoffs in the 2018-19 season, where they were swept in the first round.

The Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham is scheduled to have season-ending surgery on his left shin, sources confirmed on Monday. Cunningham was the number one overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Sidelined since November 9, Cunningham has consulted with multiple doctors over the past few weeks. Together with the Pistons and his representatives at Excel Sports, the player elected to undergo surgery. While it will result in him being sidelined for the remainder of the season, the procedure is expected to have him fully recovered for the start of the 2023-24 season.

After taking a month to rest his shin and see if any improvements would arise, it became clear to Cunningham that the season-ending surgery would provide him the optimal recovery.

This season, the 21-year-old has averaged 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6 assists in 12 games. This is an improvement on the 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.6 assists that he averaged during his rookie season when he was third in the Rookie of the Year vote.

Currently, the Pistons are bottom of the Eastern Conference standings after losing three consecutive games.

Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham will be unavailable for selection for at least four games after experiencing shin soreness, the team revealed on Saturday. As a result of this setback, he was omitted from the team that faced the Boston Celtics in what was a 117-108 loss at the Little Caesars Arena.

Cunningham was also not selected for the Pistons’ previous game against the New York Knicks on Friday. His most recent appearance was against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, when he posted a season-low four points on 1-for-11 shooting. This was the first occasion this season on which Cunningham was unable to post a score in double figures.

To date, the 21-year-old guard is averaging 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists this season. While a respectable tally, the pressure is on for Cunningham to prove his worth after he was selected as the number one overall pick of the 2021 NBA draft.

For Detroit, Cunningham’s absence comes at a particularly inopportune time with the team sitting at the foot of the Eastern Conference standings. The Pistons next face the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, when they will hope to bring an end to a three-game losing streak.

The Detroit Pistons forward Bojan Bogdanovic has agreed to a two-year extension worth $39.1 million, his agents at Wasserman confirmed on Sunday. The player will now be eligible to remain with the Pistons until the end of the 2024-25 season.

The Croatian player has already proven himself as a key player for the Pistons, averaging 23 points on 51.7% field goal percentage in the first six games of the season.

Bogdanovic arrived in Detroit as part of a preseason trade with the Utah Jazz. Prior to his arrival, Bogdanovic was in the final year of his contract with the Jazz, worth $19.5 million in its final year. While playing for the Jazz, the Pistons recognized the 33-year-old player’s excellent floor-spacing presence, deciding to make a move for the forward as a result.

At the time of Bogdanovic’s move to Detroit, the Pistons’ general manager Troy Weaver had the intention of signing the Croatian to the extension that was finalized on Sunday.

Over the past three seasons, Bogdanovic has played a prominent part in Utah’s NBA Western Conference playoffs. Prior to playing for the Jazz, the forward represented Indiana, Washington, and Brooklyn; averaging 15.1 points in his 609 career games.

Being one of the worst teams in the 2020-21 season has paid off for the Detroit Pistons as the franchise now possesses the first overall selection in the 2021 NBA Draft. This was the result of the league’s annual draft lottery held on Tuesday night.

The Pistons finished the regular season with a 20-52 record, which was the worst in the Eastern Conference and second-worst in the league, which tied them for the best odds for the No. 1 pick. The Houston Rockets, who finished 2020-21 with the worst record at 17-55 got the second overall selection.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, who were tied for fourth-best odds to get the top spot, will choose third followed by the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic.

The Magic will have two selections in the lottery, landing the No. 8 pick via Chicago Bulls. The same goes for the Golden State Warriors, who will have the Minnesota Timberwolves’ pick at No. 7 and their own at No. 14.

This will be the first time that the Pistons get to select first since 1970 when they took Hall of Famer Bob Lainer. Detroit was in the top five last time in 2003, when they took Serbia’s Darko Milicic with the second overall pick.

The No. 1 pick will help the Pistons fast-track their rebuilding process that started the last offseason. They will presumably take Oklahoma State’s guard Cade Cunningham, who was projected as the top selection for the better part of the year.

Cunningham averaged 20.1 points in his freshman season at Oklahoma while adding 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as well.

“Obviously we get to add another wing player to the restoration process,” said Pistons general manager Troy Weaver after the lottery. “We’re excited to be in this position. But it means that we’ve got a lot of work to do, and we’re going to be diligent about it. But it always helps to be able to add the No. 1 pick.”

Being one of the worst teams in the 2020-21 season has paid off for the Detroit Pistons as the franchise now possesses the first overall selection in the 2021 NBA Draft. This was the result of the league’s annual draft lottery held on Tuesday night.
