Dominic Thiem won’t get a chance for redemption after losing two straight French Open finals in the previous year. Thiem, who won the US Open last month, was eliminated in the quarter-finals of this year’s tournament by Diego Schwartzman in an epic five-set match.

Schwartzman, the world’s No. 12 player, took the lead in the first set via 7-6 (7-1) tiebreaker and had a chance to double the lead in the second set having 5-4 and 15-30. However, Thiem rallied to win the three following games and tie the match before taking the third set in another 6-7 (6-8) tiebreaker.

The fourth set was another nail-biter, with Schwartzman emerging victorious after the third tiebreaker in the match. At that point, Thiem was already exhausted, allowing the Argentinian to book his ticket to semi-finals with a dominant 6-2 outing in the fifth set.

“We are friends,” said Schwartzman after the match. “I have a lot of respect for him, and that’s why this match is very, very important for me. Not just to play a good match, winning after five hours in Philippe Chatrier, the first time. I’ve played few times five sets here, and I never win. I think at the end, this night, I deserve to win. Come on.”

The semi-finals appearance, which will see him face Rafael Nadal in this year’s tournament, will be Diego Schwartzman’s best outing on French Open. His previous best result was quarterfinals in 2018.

Dominic Thiem, on the other hand, ends his road on Roland Garros before the semi-finals for the first time since 2015.

“I was over the limit today,” said Thiem. “I still could play at quite a high level for more than five hours. But, I mean, [Schwartzman] was keeping it up until the end. He was probably a little bit fresher than me in the fifth set.”

The favorites are getting the job done early on the 2020 French Open. The defending champion Rafael Nadal, reigning US Open champ Dominic Thiem, and No. 1 ranked tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic all easily made it to the second round of the tournament.

Nadal faced Egor Gerasimov on Monday and celebrated a cruising 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win. The 34-year-old Spaniard never seemed bothered by Gerasimov, and kept his cool in the deciding moments, converting all of his five break points.

Nadal, who previously missed US Open due to concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic, will now face Mackenzie McDonald in the second round as he aims for his 13th title at Roland Garros.

Dominic Thiem had a lot more demanding challenges compared to Nadal’s, as the Austrian faced 2014’s US Open winner Marin Cilic. Still, Thiem responded with a dominant performance and secured a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, victory despite 7 out of his 13 break points.

Thiem has set the stage for a second-round match against Jack Sock, aiming to return to his third-straight French Open finals.

Novak Djokovic was the last to play his first-round match, being pitted against No.80 ranked Mikael Ymer. Fresh of winning Italian Open, Djokovic quickly dispatched Ymer, allowing him only five games en route to 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 win.

Djokovic’s next opponent is Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis.

The 2019 US Open is only entering its second round, but we are already witnessing some shockers. Fourth seed Dominic Thiem and eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas both suffered defeats in their opening matches and have surprisingly been eliminated from the tournament.

Thiem, who reached quarterfinals last year, faced unseeded Italian Thomas Fabbiano on Wednesday and entered the match as an overwhelming favorite. Still, Fabbiano, who is ranked 92nd in the world, caught the 25-year-old Austrian by surprise and fairly easy grabbed a win with 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in sets.

Although Fabbiano put up an impressive performance, Thiem’s downfall was largely contributed by his shaky backhand and 48 unforced errors.

“I got very, very tired and exhausted after two sets. I’m far away from 100 percent. Like this, it’s very tough to win,” – Thiem admitted after the match. “I went on court because in tennis, especially in long two-week tournaments, anything can happen.”

The eighth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas also lasted only four sets, before being eliminated by No.43 ranked Andrey Rublev.

Tsitsipas lost the first set, but it looked like he might take control of the match after winning a nerve-wracking tiebreaker in the second set. Things, however, went south for the 21-year-old Greek in the next two sets as he clashed with chair umpire Damien Dumusois on several occasions and began struggling with cramps.

With Tsitsipas losing his nerves and step towards the end of the match, Rublev seized the opportunity and got a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (7), 7-5 win to advance into the next round.

Other surprising exits in the first round of 2019 US Open include the elimination of Wimbledon semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut, who fell down against unseeded Mikhail Kukushkin and the loss of ninth-seeded Karen Khachanov against Vasek Pospisi.
