New Orleans Saints’ star quarterback Drew Brees recently underwent a thumb surgery, which is expected to sideline him at least six to eight weeks. And while the Saints’ seem to be in good hands with backup Teddy Bridgewater, Brees already seems to be eager to get back on the field.

Speaking with WWL Radio on Wednesday, Brees said that he believes he “can beat” the projected timetable for his rehab.

“As far as the timetable for getting back though, they say 6 to 8 weeks. I think I can beat that, but I’m just gonna take it one week at a time and see how things go,”- said Brees.

The rehab process isn’t as tough on Brees as the fact that he is unable to play football. In the previous 13 years with the Saints, the 40-year-old Pro Bowler only missed two games.

“It was weird watching on TV. It was really weird. I didn’t really like it,” – he added. “Listen, I’m still one of the leaders of this team and a captain. I’m gonna do whatever I can to help.”

Despite losing Brees, Saints had the luck of having arguably the best backup QB in the league. Bridgwater, who is also the highest-paid backup in NFL, stepped in for Brees in Week 3 and while not impressing, he showed New Orleans that they can rely on him by throwing for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
