The Denver Broncos became the latest NFL team to decide on their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season. Broncos opted for veteran Teddy Bridgewater, who got the coach Vic Fangio’s confidence ahead of 2019’s second-round pick Drew Lock.

Fangio informed the team about his decision on Wednesday, with the Broncos confirming the news on their social media shortly after.

Lock started 13 games for the Broncos last season, throwing for 2,933 yards and 16 touchdowns. However, he threw 15 interceptions, tied for most in the league in 2020, while ranking last among starters in completion percentage with 57.3 percent.

Lock’s struggles prompted Denver’s front office to start searching competition for the young signal-caller. They ended up settling for Bridgewater, sending Carolina Panthers a sixth-round pick to acquire him.

Both Bridgewater and Lock had a strong postseason, prompting Fangio to label the competition for the starting job an “Even Steven.”

Bridgewater got to play four series in two preseason games, completing 16-of-19 passes and throwing for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Lock, on the other hand, was 14-of-21 with 231 passing yards and two TDs as well.

Still, it looks like Bridgewater showed more than Lock throughout the preseason to get an edge for the Week 1 start. This means that the 28-year-old player will register starts for three different teams in three years after he previously started five games for New Orleans Saints in 2019 and 15 games for the Panthers in 2020.

Denver Broncos are facing some unusual issues ahead of the start of their training camp. According to The Athletics’ Nick Jhabvala, Broncos’ rookie quarterback Drew Lock decided to hold out as he is still negotiating his rookie contract with the team.

Jhabvala reports that Lock and Broncos didn’t manage to agree on a deal as the player and his agent Tom Condon want to get a “QB premium” as part of the contract.

Reportedly, the main issue is that Drew Lock, whom Denver took 42nd overall, wants to get paid more than offensive guard Dalton Risner, who was selected one pick ahead of him. This might be a bit hard to pull off, as the NFL capped the maximum allowed salary for Lock’s draft slot at $7.01 million over four years. The two sides, however, can negotiate the amount of guaranteed money and bonuses.

Entering the 2019 NFL Draft, Lock was considered a raw QB with a big potential in the right offense. QB-needy Denver Broncos decided to take him in the second round with a plan to sit him for few years behind starter Joe Flacco and hand him over the job when he is ready.

Since Lock isn’t expected to see action in 2019 NFL season, getting snaps during the training camp and in the preseason games might be crucial for his development. This is why no one expects that his hold out lasts for long, but we’ll have to wait and see whether he or the Broncos give up first.

Joe Flacco probably thought he will be orchestrating Baltimore Ravens’ offense for years to come. Instead, rookie Lamar Jackson relegated him to a backup and eventually got him traded to Denver Broncos. This is why it isn’t surprising that Flacco isn’t exactly too keen on mentoring another rookie QB in Drew Lock.

While Broncos brought in Flacco as their starter for 2019, they also decided to take Missouri’s QB Drew Lock in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Denver’s idea is to sit Lock for a few years behind Flacco and have him learn from the veteran. It seems, however, that the 22-year-old rookie will have to make a significant effort to get himself into that position.

“Listen, I have so many things to worry about. I’m trying to go out there and play good football. I’m trying to go out there and play the best football of my life,” – Flacco told reporters on Monday, after the Broncos’ first day of organized team activities. “As far as a time constraint and all of that stuff, I’m not worried about developing guys or any of that. That is what it is. I hope he does it well. I don’t look at that as my job. My job is to go win football games for this football team.”

Flacco later continued in a less harsh tone.

“Listen, I hope he does learn from me because that means we’re out there and we’re slinging it around and having a lot of fun.” – he added.

Lock, on the other hand, said that he is looking forward to working with Joe Flacco and learn from a Super Bowl winner like him.

“It will definitely be a different transition,” – said Lock. “… If I’m going through this transition I’m glad to be behind Joe and hear what he has to say, learn from him. I’m excited to meet him, excited to get in the room with him and learn from a guy who’s won a Super Bowl.”
