With a 6-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, the Edmonton Oilers managed to secure a playoff spot for the fourth consecutive season. The Oilers were led by their star center Leon Draisaitl, who scored a hat-trick to reach the 50-goal mark in 2022-23.

This was Draisaitl’s third season with 50 or more goals since he became a pro. With captain Connor McDavid already netting 62 goals so far in the campaign, the Oilers are now the first team to have multiple players with 50 goals in a single season since 1995-96.

“It was a good night,” Draisaitl said after the game. “Lots of good plays by the guys around me, looking for me. I’m proud and very fortunate enough to have done it.”

Draisaitl has been the most consistent goal scorer in the NHL in the past five seasons. He has scored 229 goals during that time span, more than any other player in the league. Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews is in second place with 222 goals, while McDavid ranks third with 214 goals since the 2018-19 campaign.

“You don’t see it every day that someone gets to 50 and gets 100 points pretty much every year they’ve been in the league,” McDavid said of Draisaitl. “Really, really impressive. Can’t say enough good things about him. He’s been on a real tear.”

The Edmonton Oilers’ star Connor McDavid continues to be a menace for opposing teams in the 2022-23 NHL season. On Tuesday night, McDavid scored twice and added one assists to lead the Oilers to a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. This also meant that he reached a career total of 800 points in the NHL.

McDavid needed 545 games in the league to become a member of the 800 club. This made him the fifth-fastest player to do so, placing him behind hockey legends Wayne Gretzky (352 games), Mario Lemieux (410 games), Mike Bossy (525 games), and Peter Stastny (531 games).

On the same night when McDavid got to the 800 mark, his teammate Leon Draisaitl got to 700 points in his career.

McDavid scored his two goals against the Flyers while the game was tied at 2-2. The win moved the Oilers to a 31-18-8 record and helped them remain in the Stanley Cup playoff hunt.

“It’s cliche that good teams find a way to win when they don’t have their stuff, and that was tonight,” said McDavid after the game. “We did just enough to get a win. It’s going to take a lot more than that to win coming down the stretch, but give the boys credit.”

Connor McDavid is currently the league leader in goals (44), assists (61), and points (105). He is on a good track to pick up his career fifth and third straight Art Ross Trophy, given to the league leader in points at the end of the regular season.

Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane was transported to the hospital after he was cut on his left wrist with a skate blade during his team’s 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night.

After getting tangled with Tampa Bay defenseman Philippe Myers, Kane fell on the ice when his wrist was sliced by the skate of Lightning forward Pat Maroon three minutes and 27 seconds into the second period.

The Oilers have confirmed that Kane remains in stable condition following the incident and is scheduled to undergo a procedure on Tuesday night.

“It’s scary, certainly scary,” Oilers star Connor McDavid recalled of the incident. “I think you could feel the energy in the entire rink kind of just get sucked out. We’re thinking about him. We’re hearing he’s doing OK, but that’s obviously initial.”

Lightning coach Jon Cooper expressed his remorse for Kane, recalling the moment of the forward’s injury as being difficult to watch. “Hopefully he’s going to be OK because, you know, hockey, you battle against each other. It’s a war, [but] we’re still a family,” Cooper remarked.

The NHL strongly believes that teams from Canada will be able to play games at home in the 2020-21 season. This was confirmed to reporters on Thursday by Bill Daly, the league’s deputy commissioner.

According to Daly, the NHL recently had discussions with the provincial health authorities and managed to get clearance for the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Winnipeg Jets to compete in their home arenas.

“On the basis of our discussions in the past week, as well as our exchange of correspondence over the last 24 hours, we believe we are aligned and in agreement on the conditions on which each of our Canadian franchises can begin play in their own buildings for the start of the 2020-21 NHL season,” said Daly.

Canada has closed its borders with the United States for non-essential travelers due to the coronavirus pandemic and intends to keep it that way at least until January 21st. Although the new NHL season kicks off on January 13th, the ban won’t affect Canadian teams as they will play only against each other.

The NHL made several significant changes to their regular season format for 2020-21 to minimize the traveling and organized all teams in four divisions. Each team will only play their divisional opponents, with the format being carried over to the first two rounds of the playoffs as well.

Captain Connor McDavid enjoyed a standout performance as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3 in their Game 2 clash of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Monday.

In the post-game interview, McDavid expressed his pride in his team’s performance, stating, “You never plan to score on the first shift, but we wanted to have a good start and make sure we were in their zone and we found a way to get one, and that was good. Some of the standout performers on the night included Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who had three assists, and Olilers goalie Mikko Koskinen made an impressive 23 saves for the Oilers. Blackhawks players Patrick Kane and Slater Koekkoek both grabbed a goal and an assist each.

Blackhawks Captain Kane had this to say following his side’s defeat, “We gave them too many chances.hey have a lot of offensive players who will capitalize. We’ll try to be better defensively. This is what’s fun about the playoffs, these highs and lows. We’re happy we got the opportunity here, so I think we’ll bounce back and have a better game in Game 3.”

Edmonton Oilers’ new general manager Ken Holland didn’t take long to find the franchise’s new coach. Several weeks after taking over the GM duties and firing Ken Hitchcock, Holland decided to hire Dave Tippett as the man who will be at the team’s helm for 2019/20 NHL season.

Tippett joins Oilers after previously serving as the head coach of Dallas Stars and Arizona Coyotes. He will sign a three-year deal with the organization. The Athletic’s Pierre Lebrun reports that the contract is worth around $3 million per year.

“Dave was always the leading candidate in my mind going through the process, but I wanted to make sure we were hiring the best man possible and I feel very good about that today,” – said Holland in a statement.

“I’m big on experience,” – he added. “Dave has coached in the National Hockey League for more than 1000 games. When you’re in the NHL there’s always some choppy waters and certainly having someone behind the bench that’s been through those before, it’s a positive.”

Dave Tippett got his first head coaching gig in Dallas in 2002 and ended ups spending six years with the Stars. During that time, the team made five playoff trips including one Conference Finals. Tippett joined the Coyotes ahead of 2009/10 NHL season, and had a successful start of his stint in Phoenix, making consecutive Conference Quarterfinals and one Conference Finals after that. Things went downhill from there, however, and he was released in 2017 after Coyotes missed on playoffs for five consecutive seasons.

“It’s just an exciting time,” -said Tippett after inking the deal with the Oilers. “I think this is going to be a fun ride. I think there’s a lot of upside in this team.”
