The Los Angeles Rams turned to a familiar face to replenish their secondary after seeing starting safety Jordan Fuller go down with a season-ending injury. The team convinced the six-time Pro Bowler Eric Weddle to come out of retirement and have signed the 37-year-old to their practice squad.

Weddle first joined the Rams in 2019, making 16 starts and finishing second on the team in tackles with 108. Despite having one more year left on his deal, he decided to retire after the regular season ended and the Rams missed the playoffs.

Despite spending just one year with the franchise, Weddle is highly respected by the Rams players and coaching staff. He was selected as the team captain in his lone season and also served as a defensive signal-caller.

Besides the Rams, Weddle also suited up for the LA Chargers and Baltimore Ravens before his initial retirement. He made the All-Pro team five times alongside his six Pro Bowl appearances and was selected to NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. His career stats include 1,178 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 99 pass deflections, 29 interceptions, and four defensive touchdowns.

Weddle won’t be the only defensive back joining the Rams for their playoff run. The team also signed veterans Blake Countess and Sharrod Neasman to the practice squad and promoted third-year safety Jake Gervase to the active roster.

The NFL retirement season is heating up. The latest player to say goodbye to pro football is Los Angeles Rams’ safety Eric Weddle.

Following the end of the regular season, Weddle admitted that he is contemplating retirement. He also underwent his first surgery during his 13 years in the league at the time and said this would factor in his decision as well.
