FC Cincinnati’s forward Brenner is set to continue his soccer career in Europe. According to MLS insider Tom Bogert, the Seria A side Udinese is finalizing a deal to land the 23-year-old player in what will be one of the biggest transfers in MLS history.

The two clubs have already agreed to the terms of the transfer and are expected to finalize it by the end of the week. Reportedly, Udinese will pay $10 million for Brenner’s services. The player will remain with Cincinnati until the summer and will move to Italy once the European transfer window opens.

Brenner was one of the biggest stories of the 2022 MLS season, scoring 18 goals and adding six assists in 29 games. The Brazilian hasn’t been cold to start the 2023 campaign, scoring just once in seven games, but apparently didn’t discourage Udinese from beating other clubs for his signature.

There was significant interest in Brenner in January when Udinese saw its initial bid rejected. The Premier League’s Nottingham Forrest and Eredivisie side PSV also made a run for the talented forward, but their bids fell short of Cincinnati’s evaluation.

Brenner started his professional career in his native Brazil, playing for Sao Paulo and Fluminense. He joined Cincinnati ahead of the 2021 MLS season for a reported $13 million. Since then, he has played 69 games and scored 27 goals to go with eight assists.

The teams from Group E of the MLS Is Back tournament had a rough night yesterday, as both Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati were eliminated from the round of 16.

Columbus Crew were dumped out in what was a shock loss to underdogs Minnesota United. While Columbus dictated the game from the start, Minnesota shocked the dominant side as Robin Lod scored the opening goal after 18 minutes of play. After nearly a dozen shots, Columbus were finally able to level the scoreline in the 79th minute when Gyasi Zardes slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, neither team was able to find the back of the net in extra time, resulting in the game going to penalties. After Columbus missed just one penalty, Minnesota’s Chase Gasper scored the sixth goal in order to catapult his side into the quarter-finals. While Columbus dominated proceedings during the group stages, Minnesota came runners up in what was a competitive Group C.

Group E runners up FC Cincinnati came up against Group D winners Portland Timber in their fixture. While the dominant Portland took 19 shots in total, the match favorite was only able to find the back of the net in the 67th minute. In the 81st minute, a foul from inside the box handed Cincinnati a penalty, that Jurgen Locadia happily converted. Like their local rivals Columbus, Cincinnati also exited the tournament in a heartbreaking fashion, losing 5-3 on penalties to the Oregon-based side.

FC Cincinnati secured a place in the Last 16 of the MLS is Back tournament following their emphatic 2-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls.

Cincinnati started the day in third place on the Group E standings, while the Red Bulls were sitting in second place thanks to a superior goal difference. This meant that a win was crucial in order for Cincinnati to progress in the competition.

While some third-placed teams will earn a place in the knockout stages, NY Red Bulls will not be one of those teams due to their goal difference of minus three.

The game featured plenty of action, with New York Red Bulls taking a massive 19 shots. The team from the Big Apple remained in the drivers’ seat for much of the match, retaining a whopping 68% possession throughout the 90 minutes.

Despite their dominance, it wasn’t meant to be for the Red Bulls as they failed to find the back of the net. On the other hand, Cincinnati made the most out of the few chances they had, scoring two goals after managing just four goal attempts all night.

Yuya Kubo grabbed a 42nd minute lead for the underdogs, after which their lead was doubled in the 56th minute thanks to an own goal by Florian Valot.

In their opening game of Group E in the MLS is Back tournament, heated rivals FC Cincinnati and Columbus Crew went toe to toe in what was expected to be a tight matchup.

While the matches between these two Ohio-based clubs are known to be extremely tense, this fixture happened to be unexpectedly one-sided, with Columbus Crew humiliating FC Cincinnati 4-0.

Lucas Zelarayan put Columbus in the lead in the 27th minute with a stunning free-kick – already praised by some as the goal of the season thus far. Just three minutes later, Gyasi Zardes converted to hand Columbus a 2-0 lead going into the half time break.

Despite getting an opportunity to regroup at half time, Cincinnati’s defense collapsed yet again after just four minutes of second-half action, with Zardes scoring his second goal of the evening. On the hour mark, Youness Mokhtar put his name on the score sheet to close out the scoring.

In the other Group E clash, Atlanta United lost by a narrow scoreline of 1-0 to New York Red Bulls, courtesy of a Florian Valot goal in the 4th minute of play. This means that Columbus Crew currently sit in top spot going into the second round of fixtures.

With the likes of F.C. Cincinnati and Inter Miami C.F. joining the MLS in recent seasons as expansion teams, The United States’ premier soccer league is going through a major period of expansion as well as renewal.

At the moment, there are seven franchises that are in the process of building privately funded stadiums. This move diverts significantly from the approach of other major American sports leagues, all of whom tend to raise money through the public.

One team that is going through a major transition is F.C. Cincinnati, a club founded in 2015 as a minor-league team. Having attracted more than 17,000 fans to its games on a regular basis, the club was approached by the MLS to become a franchise. Now, this team is in the process of building their 550,000-square-foot, 26,000-seat stadium for the 2021 season.

In order to construct the stadium, F.C. Cincinnati received $35 million from the city for infrastructure as well as the support of neighborhood residents. Overall, the stadium is costing $250 million to build.

Inter Miami C.F., the latest edition to the MLS lineup, is in the midst of building a privately funded $60 million stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with 18,000 seating capacity.

Long established franchises that are also constructing new stadiums include Austin F.C. and Columbus Crew S.C.

On Monday, FC Cincinnati managed to pull off their biggest move of the offseason. The team announced that they have acquired forward Jurgen Locadia. The 26-year-old Dutchman arrives from Premier League side Brighton.

According to reports, Locadia, who signed as a Designated Player, will arrive in MLS on a loan deal until July while Cincinnati holds an option to make the move permanent afterward.

Locadia started the season with Brighton but played only two games before he was sent on loan to Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim. He played 11 games in Germany and scored four goals.

FC Cincinnati made the move official via their social media.

“We are excited to bring in a proven forward in Jürgen to strengthen our attacking abilities,” said FC Cincinnati general manager Gerard Nijkamp in a statement. “He is a talented goalscorer in his prime, and we feel adding an impact player of his caliber will be a great addition to our club. We look forward to welcoming Jürgen to our club and city.”

Jurgen Locadia started his professional career with Dutch powerhouse PSV, where he scored 62 goals in 176 games between 2011 and 2018. In 2018, he joined Brighton in a transfer worth close to $20 million.

Locadia was a starter in his first season in England but failed to match his previous production. His struggles in front of the goal caused him to lose his place in the starting 11, and eventually led him to the club’s exit door. He scored six goals in 43 games with Brighton.

FC Cincinnati’s first season in MLS proved to be quite challenging, as they currently sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. In efforts to change their luck, the club decided to make some badly needed roster additions before MLS secondary transfer window closed on Wednesday night.

Cincinnati announced on Thursday morning that they have signed U.S. international winger Joe Gyau from German side MSV Duisburg. Financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

“We are delighted to welcome Joe to FC Cincinnati,” – said FC Cincinnati’s general manager Gerard Nijkamp in a statement. “We feel his ability and pace are a good fit for our style of play and he will provide another attacking option on our roster.”

Gyau spent his entire professional career in Germany, where he played with 1899 Hoffenheim, St. Pauli, and Borussia Dortmund among other teams. He made 20 appearances with Duisburg in 2018/19 season and scored two goals.

Joe Gyau made his international debut with USMNT in 2014, but injuries and inconsistency kept him out of the team for the previous four years. Things changed in 2019, as the 26-year-old received a call up from Gregg Berhalter early in the year.

Besides Gyau, FC Cincinnati also managed to finalize a deal for midfielder Derrick Etienne Jr. on Wednesday. Etienne joined Cincinnati from New York Red Bulls on a loan until the end of the season.
