Higuain joined Inter via trade with D.C. United back in October. The 36-year-old veteran, who was coming off a serious knee injury, made four appearances as a substitute last season.

According to Inter sporting director Chris Henderson, the team is excited to have Higuain back for a full season for both his contributions on the field and off the field.

“It’s great to have Federico back,” said Henderson. “He is a valuable asset to the team not only because of what he can contribute to on the field but also for what he brings to the locker room, which is experience, a positive attitude, and professionalism to the group.”

Federico Higuain is considered one of the better midfielders in the MLS over the past decade, having made his name during eight years with Columbus Crew. Between 2012 and 2019, Higuain played 210 games in Crew’s jersey while scoring 51 goals and adding 59 assists in the process.

Before coming to the United States, Higuain played for River Plate, Besiktas, and Independiente, among other clubs.

Higuain spent the last eight seasons with Columbus Crew, becoming one of the franchise’s most recognizable players. However, after ACL injury limited him to just 14 games in 2019, Crew decided not to renew his contract. 

After parting ways with Columbus, it was widely expected for Higuain to end his career. However, according to The Athletic and Washington Post, D.C. United believes he can still play meaningful minutes in the league while adding value to their coaching staff as an assistant.

The two sides are expected to finalize the paperwork and make the agreement official in the next few days. The fans shouldn’t expect Higuain on the field just yet, however, as he is reportedly still a long way before returning to action, and will need around six weeks to get into playing shape.

Columbus announced on Monday that they have declined to exercise the team option on Higuain’s contract, and won’t bring him back in 2020. The 34-year-old played 14 games this season, in which he provided one goal and five assists before suffering a season-ending injury.

“On behalf of our Club and our ownership group, I’d like to thank (Federico) for everything that he has been for this Club,” – said Columbus’ general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. “He is an absolute legend; he’s respected from top to bottom in our organization.”

Bezbatchenko also added that Crew would welcome Higuain in an executive or coaching role in the future and that he will always be welcomed in Columbus.

Higuain tore his ACL in a 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rapids last Saturday, leaving the field in the second half after providing the assists for the team’s second goal. The 34-year-old played 14 games in MLS this season, having scored one goal and contributed with three assists.

Considering the fact that Higuain is a key player in the team’s midfield, his injury represents devastating news for Crew, as the team is trying to get out of the slump they find themselves in lately. Columbus lost eight out of their last nine games, which caused them to slip to ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
