The upcoming boxing match between YouTuber Jake Paul and boxer/TV personality Tommy Fury will have a star-studded undercard. According to the announcement made by Most Valuable Promotions on Tuesday, one of the warm-up bouts will see NFL running back Frank Gore and retired NBA point guard Deron Williams meeting in the ring.

The fight between Gore and Williams will take place on December 18th in Tampa. It will be contested at a 215-pound contractual limit and will have four rounds. Both fighters are making their boxing debuts.

While the news may seem surprising, both Gore and Williams have some experience with combat sports and are serious about the bout. According to ESPN, Gore is a boxing enthusiast and has been training the sport for years now. He even decided to pass on the opportunities to play professional football this season so he could pursue his first boxing fight.

Williams, on the other hand, is well familiar with mixed martial arts and is co-owner of an MMA gym in Dallas.

Frank Gore played 16 years in the NFL, suiting up for the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts among other teams. He last played professional football in 2020, when he made 14 starts for the New York Jets and rushed for 653 yards and two touchdowns. The 38-year-old, who has five Pro Bowl nods, is still not officially retired.

Deron Williams ended his professional career in NBA in 2017 after stints with the Utah Jazz, the Brooklyn Nets, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He made three All-Star stints during his career.

Running back Frank Gore managed to put together a productive season for Buffalo Bills in 2019 even at the age of 36. So far, Gore hasn’t decided whether he will continue playing in 2020, and Bills recently decided to add to the uncertainty.

According to Buffalo’s general manager Brandon Beane, the team waits for Gore to make his decision, after which they should determine whether they have a place on the roster for the veteran.

“To where he goes next, I’m not sure,” said Beane about Gore’s situation. “At the end of the year, a guy at his age—It was super awesome to watch him climb into third in the rushing stats. But we’ll let him decide what he’s going to do and we’ll self-inventory ourselves and make a decision. But nothing has been determined from him, whether he wants to continue playing. And then on the other end, whether we would have a spot for him back.”

Frank Gore, who will be 37 when the 2020 NFL season kicks off, rushed for 599 yards and two touchdowns in 2019 while adding 100 receiving yards on 13 catches- However, with the emergence of rookie Devin Singletary, it is unlikely that he will manage to have an impactful role for Buffalo next season if brought back. At this point, Bills are probably leaning towards stacking Singletary’s carries in 2020 while having a younger backup who can also contribute on special teams.

Gore spent most of his career in NFL with San Francisco 49ers, while also spending time with Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins. He has five Pro Bowl appearances, while currently being third on NFL’s All-Time rushing list.
