The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a tough-to-swallow 6-5 loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday, but it still turned out to be a special game for their star first baseman Freddie Freeman. Facing two outs in the eighth inning, Freeman launched a pitch from Astros’ right-hander Rafael Montero to right center field for what was his 2,000th career hit.

Freeman now became just the sixth active player in MLB with 2,000 career hits. Also, only 33 players in MLB history have managed to reach this mark.

After getting the 2,000th hit, Freeman was on the receiving end of standing ovations by fans at the Dodger Stadium.

“The fans have embraced my family and I since the day they got here,” Freeman said after the game. “They made another special memory for the Freeman family. Dodger fans never disappoint. Another special day, one I’ll never forget. Took long enough, but I’m glad it happened at home.”

Freddie Freeman is currently midway through his second season with the Dodgers after signing a six-year, $162 million contract with the franchise last year. In 77 games in 2023, Freeman is batting .317 with 14 home runs and 48 RBIs.

Despite the recent loss to the Astros, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been on a good run lately, winning four out of five games. They are currently third in NL West with a 43-34 record and 3.0 games behind the leading Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Atlanta Braves are in the National League Championship Series for the second straight year after a comeback 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. And they have the first baseman Freddie Freeman to thank for that.

The Braves were twice behind but responded each time and managed to make it 4-4 by the bottom of the fifth. After a scoreless two innings, Freeman took the stage and hit a solo homer off a pitch from the Brewers’ All-Star Josh Hader in the bottom of the eighth.

With a 5-4 lead in hand, Atlanta sent out closer Will Smith to finish the job, and the celebration could start.

As ESPN points out, Freeman’s homer was the first in the Braves’ history that came in the eighth inning or later and secured a win in a postseason series. It was also the first time that Hader allowed a home run in the playoffs.

“I’ve had a lot of cool moments in my career, but so far I think that’s going to top them right there,” Freeman told reporters after the game. “But hopefully that’s not the last cool one.”

The Braves now get a do-over after they were eliminated in 2020’s NLCS by the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games. They will face the Dodgers again on Saturday night.

The Brewers, on the other hand, end their postseason run earlier than they have envisioned after winning NL Central with 95 wins.

The Chicago White Sox Jose Abreu and the Atlanta Braves Freddie Freeman, both first basemen, were named the Most Valuable Players of the American League and National League respectively.

The 2020 MLB season was a very different one because of the COVID-19 pandemic shortening the season to 60 games instead of the usual 162. But because of this, anyone who wanted to be considered for MVP honors this year couldn’t afford to go through even the slightest slump.

Freddie Freeman’s performance in Atlanta was particularly impactful because it was clear that the offense was going to have to carry the team after the Braves lost a slew of pitchers to injuries and pandemic-related opt-outs.

Freeman posted a .341 batting average, .462 on-base percentage, and .640 slugging percentage, all career highs. He also had more walks than strikeouts (45 vs. 37) and hit 13 home runs.

Freeman beat out two flashy MLB stars, Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts and San Diego Padres slugger Manny Macahdo, because of his sheer consistency and his important to his team.

Abreu was similarly recognized for consistency and for his importance to the team. He is the first White Sox to win the MVP award since Frank Thomas took the title in back-to-back seasons in 1993-94.

The Atlanta Braves’ Freddie Freeman had been one of the first MLB players to test positive for COVID-19 earlier this month, scaring fans, other players, and the team’s front office alike after he came down with a particularly severe case of the virus.

However, against all odds, Freeman returned to training with his team on Friday after testing negative twice for the virus, and appears to be on track to play on Opening Day.

News had broken in early July that Freeman, a four-time NL All Star, was separated from the team with COVID-19 symptoms and a high fever after testing positive. On Friday, the star first baseman revealed that he was truly afraid for his life during his bout with the coronavirus.

Reflecting on the night in which he was most ill, Freeman revealed that he had dealt with a fever of 104.5 F. He said, “I said a little prayer that night. I’ve never been that hot before. My body was really, really hot. … I said ‘Please don’t take me’ because I wasn’t ready.”

Fortunately, Freeman’s body fought off the virus and only a couple of weeks later, he returned to participate in practices and intrasquad scrimmages with his teammates.

He expects to play in the Braves’ opener on July 24th against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
