]]>Mackay-Steven, who also had an offer from Aberdeen, will reportedly sign a deal through the 2022-23 season. He confirmed the move on social media.
Gary Mackay-Steven joined NYCFC on a two-year deal in 2019 and was initially supposed to have a big role for the MLS squad. However, Mackay-Steven never actually managed to secure a spot in the starting lineup, being mostly used as a backup and fill-in for injured players.
During his two seasons with NYCFC, Mackay-Steven played a total of 34 games (15 starts) and contributed with just three goals and two assists. The club had an option to keep him under contract for the 2021 MLS season but declined it for obvious reasons.
Mackay-Steven will now get a chance to resurrect his career in a familiar setting, considering he spent all of his pre-MLS career in Scotland. He played for Airdrie United, Dundee United, Celtic, and Aberdeen.
He also has two appearances for the Scottish national team.

]]>“Gary is a player we have been tracking for some time, and we’re excited to add him to our squad,” – said NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna in a statement. “He’s an out-and-out winger that can play on both sides of the pitch and strengthens our attacking options. We have a core group of experienced players who form the spine of our team and Gary possesses the same leadership qualities that already exist in our locker room. He’s played in big games in Europe and has been part of title-winning teams and we’re really excited to have him join NYCFC.”
Mackay-Steven comes to MLS after playing 20 matches in Scottish Premiership last season and contributing with four goals and one assist. In total, the 28-year-old spent two full seasons with Aberdeen and scored 16 goals in 72 matches.
“I’m delighted to finally sign on the dotted line. I can’t wait to hit the ground running and make my debut in the blue shirt. I can’t wait to show what I can do to the fans in Yankee Stadium,” Mackay-Steven said in a club statement. “The lure of playing in America and in MLS is really attractive to me. It’s always been a draw for me, it’s hard to say no. I can’t wait to get started.”
After starting his professional career in low-tier Scottish clubs, Gary Mackay-Steven caught the attention of Dundee United who signed him in 2011. Mackay-Steven made a big transfer to Scottish powerhouse Celtic in 2015, where he spent three seasons but failed to establish himself as a starter.
Mackay-Steven represents Scotland on the international level, having made his last appearance in 2018.
