Forward Gordon Hayward is hitting the open market one year earlier than it was expected. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Hayward declined his $34.2 million option for 2020/21 NBA season with Boston Celtics and will become an unrestricted free agent.

Hayward and Celtics previously agreed to prolong the decision about the option from Tuesday to Thursday, giving the player more time to think.

Hayward signed a max-deal with Boston Celtics in 2017, but failed to make an expected impact on the franchise as he often struggled with injuries. He suffered a gruesome ankle injury in his first official game with the Celtics, being forced to miss the entire 2017/18 season. Besides this, he also dealt with several lesser injuries like nerve pain, sprains, and broken hand bone.

However, Hayward did show flashes of his former self during the 2019/20 regular season. He finished the campaign by playing in 52 games while averaging 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per contest.

It is easy to see Gordon Hayward’s motivation to enter the free agency. He immediately becomes one of the biggest names in a talent-lacking free agency, which will certainly guarantee him some big offers. Also, he’ll get long-term security with a new deal, which is of utmost importance considering his injury history.

As ESPN points out, Hayward can now agree to a new deal with Boston Celtics or sign with a team that has cap space like New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks. The last, and the most likely option, is working out a sign-and-trade deal that would see him join the club of his preference while allowing Celtics to get some assets in return.

Boston Celtics could get a significant boost on the wing as they gear up for the Eastern Conference Finals duel against Miami Heat. According to Celtics’ head coach Brad Stevens, forward Gordon Hayward is making progress in his rehab, and the team is expecting him back “at some point” in the series.

Hayward suffered an ankle sprain at the very beginning of Boston’s playoff run and has been out for almost a month. However, the 30-year-old player recently started practicing and doing individual work, which made Stevens optimistic about his return.

“Since I’ve seen him last, it’s good progress,” said Stevens. “I know he feels better. He’s worked hard to get to where he is, and I think he’ll play at some point in this series. As far as predicting a timeline, I have no idea. But I feel like he’s made good progress and will play eventually.”

Although injuries prevented Gordon Hayward to make his full mark in Boston after coming as a big-time free agent, he was more than solid during 2019/20. Hayward made 52 starts this season and averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

Celtics are scheduled to face Heat in Game 1 of the East Finals on Tuesday night.

Boston Celtics managed to get 1-0 lead in the First Round against Philadelphia 76ers, but it looks like Monday’s win came with a steep price. Celtics’ head coach Brad Stevens confirmed on Tuesday that their forward Gordon Hayward suffered an ankle injury against 76ers and will be out for at least four weeks.

Hayward got injured in the fourth quarter of 76ers game, rolling his ankle after landing on teammate Daniel Theis’ foot. The 30-year-old player left the game and was later seen on crutches.

Further test showed that Hayward is dealing with Grade 3 right ankle sprain and will be out of action for about a month.

“He’s bummed, as you can imagine,” said Stevens. ” [He’s] put in a lot of time and effort, and you do so for this time, for the playoffs. That’s what we all look forward to, and we’ve been really lucky thus far in the bubble to have good health and, of course, [after] Game 1 we don’t.”

After struggling two seasons in Boston, Gordon Hayward finally managed to find his footing this season and emerge as a valuable contributor for Celtics. Before the injury, Hayward was averaging 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists.

Losing this kind of production will be hard to replace, and Stevens is well aware of that. Still, he believes his team will be able to respond in the best way possible.

“I think we can certainly do a lot here, but all that is stuff is to be determined,” he added. “We haven’t gotten into that stuff or that conversation.”

Boston Celtics signed Gordon Hayward to a four-year max deal in 2017, counting on him to be the team’s next big superstar and to lead the franchise to the NBA title. It’s safe to say that things haven’t turn out as planned.

Hayward suffered a season-ending injury in his Celtics’ debut which significantly impacted his contribution to the team. After returning from the injury in 2018/19, he mightily struggled and wasn’t even close to the All-Star Boston signed. But things will be different this season if we are to believe the 29-year-old forward.

Hayward recently penned a letter to Boston Celtics’ fans in which he thanked them for the support in the past two years, while saying that he is “ready to be the player I came here to be.”

“On the court, I think that’s something that coach [Brad] Stevens was cautious about with me last year,” – wrote Hayward in a letter posted on his official blog. “He wanted to ease me into everything and make sure that I was healthy. Now, the reins are off. I’m ready to be the player I came here to be. That’s my focus. That and raising a banner at the [TD] Garden.

Hayward also talked about other topics, including the upcoming challenges for the Celtics, and dramatic roster changes that took place during the summer.

Hayward played 72 games in the past season, averaging 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. His production lowered in the playoffs, as he only had 9.6 points per game.
