The Houston Texans announced on Monday that they would include their former defensive end J.J. Watt in the franchise’s Ring of Honor. Watt will become just the third player in Texans’ history to receive the honor, joining Robert C. McNair and Andre Johnson.

Watt’s induction ceremony will take place on October 1, at the halftime of the Week 4 clash against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“We are so excited to have J.J. Watt join the Ring of Honor as our third member. Everybody knows how much J.J. means to our family, the Texans organization, and the entire City of Houston,” Texans’ owners Janice, Hannah, and Cal McNair said in a statement. “…  J.J. has always kept a special place in Houston’s heart, and we’re thrilled to welcome him back.”

J.J. Watt spent the first decade of his career with the Texans. During that time, he won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award three times, earned five Pro Bowl nods, and was selected to the All-Pro team seven times. He still holds franchise records in career sacks (101.0), forced fumbles (25), and recovered fumbles (16).

Watt left Houston after the 2020 season and played for two more years with the Arizona Cardinals before retiring at the end of this past season.

Despite having three Pro Bowls on his resume, veteran defensive end Jadeveon Clowney remains a free agent. Clowney is currently assessing his options for the 2023 NFL season, and one of them seems to be a reunion with the Houston Texans.

Clowney was selected first overall in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Texans and spent the first five years of his pro career with the franchise. In a recent interview with KRIV-TV, Clowney revealed that the return to his first NFL franchise is on the cards, with his representatives and Texans front office connecting earlier this offseason.

“It would be nice,” Clowney said about the reunion with the Texans. “All my family is here. Friends here. The guys I work out with can help me take care of my body a lot better being right up under them.”

Clowney pointed out that there is no guarantee that he will come back to Houston but made it clear that he would be happy to play in Texans’ jersey once again.

“I see what they’ve got here. They’re putting the pieces together. I’m a big fan of their new head coach [DeMeco Ryans],” he added.

Jadeveon Clowney left the Texans in 2019 in a trade that saw him land with the Seattle Seahawks. He ended up spending just one season with the Seahawks before suiting up for the Tennessee Titans and the Cleveland Browns, respectively.

Clowney struggled with the Browns in 2022, playing in 12 games and managing only 2.0 sacks. This is the most likely reason why he is still on the market, but there is no doubt that a team will take a chance on him at one point. The Texans, in need of some veteran leadership, might just be that team.

The Houston Texans have reportedly worked out a new deal with recently-acquired guard Shaq Mason. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Mason inked a three-year, $36 million extension and now has a contract that runs through the 2026 NFL season.

Mason previously had one year left on his deal that came with a base salary of $7.5 million this upcoming season. With the extension, he received a $10 million signing bonus and a total of $22 million in guarantees. The 29-year-old player is now among the highest-paid guards in the league.

The Houston Texans acquired Mason in March after sending a sixth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the veteran. The team viewed Mason as an important player that could help their rebuild efforts and always intended to lock him on a long-term deal.

Shaq Mason started his career with the New England Patriots, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He became a starter for the Pats in his rookie season and went on to play a total of 103 games in the seven seasons he spent with the franchise. Mason won two Super Bowl rings while in New England.

The Pats traded Mason to the Bucs ahead of the 2022 season in a move that reunited him with quarterback Tom Brady. But after Brady retired, it became clear that Tampa would be rebuilding and that there is no place for high-paid veterans like Mason on the team.

Veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks finally got his wish of leaving the Houston Texans. Cooks is heading to the Dallas Cowboys, who are sending a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 sixth-rounder to Houston in exchange.

The Cowboys attempted to trade for Cooks last season, but the two teams couldn’t find a path to a deal. They recently resumed talks and managed to get on the same page after the Texans accepted to pay $6 million of the player’s $18 million salary in 2013.

Cooks told the Texans that he wanted out last season as he didn’t want to be a part of a rebuild. He finished the campaign with 57 catches for 699 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

“Beyond blessed and can’t wait to go be special for the star! Very thankful for the Jones family for this opportunity for my family and I,” Cooks told ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime after the deal was made official.

The Cowboys have been on the market for a dependable wide receiver for a while now, lacking options behind star wideout CeeDee Lamb. The team traded away Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns last season while Michael Gallup went down with a torn ACL. Cooks, who has 630 career catches, should solve this problem.

There were reports that Dallas is also targeting Odell Beckham Jr in free agency, with team owner Jerry Jones publicly expressing his interest in the Pro Bowler. However, sources close to the team say that the Cowboys won’t pursue Beckham now that they got Cooks.

The Houston Texans hold the No. 2 pick in this year’s NFL Draft and will most certainly use it to draft their quarterback of the future. But that reportedly won’t stop the franchise from pursuing a quality veteran for the position, with Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly being at the top of their list.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports recently reported that there is a “push” within the Texans building to sign Garoppolo to be the team’s starter in 2023. In this scenario, Houston would still take a quarterback in the first round but would have him sit for a year and learn from Garoppolo.

Serving as a bridge quarterback until his younger replacement is ready to play in NFL wouldn’t be a new experience for Garoppolo. The 31-year-old started for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 despite the franchise drafting North Dakota State’s Trey Lance with the third-overall pick in the same year.

Garoppolo is expected to draw a lot of interest in the free agent market from teams that are looking for a dependable quarterback. The New York Jets might be interested if they don’t land Aaron Rodgers, while the Carolina Panthers and the Las Vegas Raiders also make sense.

However, the Texans might be an attractive destination for Jimmy Garoppolo, considering that he would see a lot of familiar faces there. The general manager Nick Caserio was with the New England Patriots, who drafted Garoppolo in 2014, while head coach DeMeco Ryans and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik were on the 49ers coaching staff last season.

Garoppolo started the 2022 NFL campaign as a backup but got the starting job back in Week 2 after Lance suffered a season-ending injury. He went on to start 10 games before getting injured himself. Garoppolo had 2,437 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and four picks last season.

Veteran Pharaoh Brown started the 2022 NFL season as the Houston Texans’ starting tight end. But after just three weeks of action in the role, he is now off the team.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, the Texans have decided to release Brown on Tuesday. The move comes as a slight surprise, considering that the 28-year-old was on a guaranteed $3 million contract and led the team’s tight ends group with seven receptions for 72 yards.

Pharaoh Brown was the Texans’ starter at the TE position throughout Week 3 but missed the last week’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to injury. The Texans turned to Jordan Akins as his replacement and believe they saw enough to give the starting job to the former third-round pick. Akins made two catches for 33 yards against the Chargers while also making a touchdown catch in Week 3.

Another reason why the Texans decided to move away from Brown was to give more opportunities to O. J. Howard. The 2017’s first-round selection spent the past five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was part of the Super Bowl LV-winning team. He has 119 career receptions for 1,737 yards and 15 TDs.

Pharaoh Brown started his career as an undrafted free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2017. He also played for the Cleveland Browns before landing in Houston ahead of the 2020 campaign. Brown made a total of 44 catches for 406 yards and two scores in the Texans’ uniform.

The Houston Texans have addressed their secondary struggles on Wednesday by signing free-agent cornerback Steven Nelson. According to reports, Nelson signed a two-year deal with the franchise.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Nelson is set to earn $10 million over the next two years.

The Texans reportedly tried to get Nelson on board when he was a free agent last offseason, but the Oregon State product opted for Philadelphia Eagles. He started 16 games and made 50 tackles while adding one interception and seven passes defended.

Nelson fills a key position of need for the Texans, considering their corner group struggled all season long in 2021. Still, general manager Nick Caserio isn’t expected to stop there. Houston has four picks in the first two rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft, and many mock drafts predict that Caserio will take a cornerback with at least one of those picks.

Steven Nelson started his pro career with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he played between 2015 and 2018. He then spent two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before landing with the Eagles. Nelson’s career stats in the NFL include 341 tackles, eight interceptions, 59 passes defended, and one forced fumble.

Following discussions regarding a potential trade, Deshaun Watson will remain with the Houston Texans until the next offseason, NFL league sources have revealed. This news came just two days before the NFL’s trade deadline.

While faced with much opposition by those who wished to see Watson’s departure from the team, Texans general manager Nick Caserio has remained intent on only parting ways with the player upon receiving a deal that he believes reflects Watson’s true worth. The Texans are, however, reportedly open to resuming trade negotiations during the next offseason.

Texans owner Cal McNair would ideally like to see Watson traded before Tuesday’s deadline, however, he resolved to leave Caserio with the discretion to make a final decision.

Watson had been linked with potential moves to several teams during the offseason, including the Miami Dolphins and the Carolina Panthers. While Watson desired a place in the Dolphins’ team, Miami stated that he would have to resolve his ongoing legal issues before a move could be sealed. Watson also reportedly waived his no-trade clause for the Dolphins and is believed to not have done the same for the Panthers.

The Houston Texans are moving on from their longtime outside linebacker/defensive end Whitney Mercilus. According to multiple reports, the Texans will release Mercilus at some point this week in an effort to give their younger players more playing time.

The move will also give Mercilus an opportunity to land on a playoff contender and play some meaningful football for the rest of the season. The 31-year-old is expected to have more than a few suitors considering he played well in the first six games of the 2021 season. He contributed with 12 tackles and 3.0 sacks despite playing as a defensive end for the first time in his career.

Mercilus, who was Houston’s first-round selection in 2012, played a total of 134 games in the Texans jersey. He has a Second-Team All-Pro selection from 2016.

Reportedly, Mercilus isn’t the only player Houston will say goodbye to this week. The franchise also intends to release kick and punt returner Andre Roberts, who previously joined the Texans on a one-year deal during the offseason.

With Whitney Mercilus out the door, the Texans are expected to roll with 2020’s third-round pick Jon Greenard and four-year veteran Jacob Martin at DE. Greenard is enjoying a breakthrough season in which he already has 13 tackles, 4.0 sacks, five QB hits, and one forced fumble. Martin has one sack and seven tackles to show for through first six weeks.

The Houston Texans will have a new face under center for their Thursday Night Football matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Head coach David Culley told the media on Tuesday that rookie Davis Mills will take over as starting quarterback for Week 3 after veteran Tyrod Taylor was ruled out for the game due to a hamstring injury.

Mills, who was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, had his NFL debut in Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns. The Stanford product replaced Taylor in the second half and finished the contest by completing eight passes out of 18 attempts and throwing for 102 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Texans ended up suffering a 31-21 loss and dropping to a 1-1 record in 2021.

Culley is hoping for a better performance from Mills against the Panthers, saying that he believes the first-team reps the rookie had during practices in recent days have made him more comfortable in the starting role.

“He’s been ready,” Culley said of Mills. “Now that he’s gotten those reps, I think there will be a comfort level in starting the game.”

The Houston Texans also have Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson on their roster, but he isn’t expected to dress for the Panthers game or any other game this season. Watson made a trade request early in the offseason, and it is only a matter of time before he leaves the franchise.

Veteran Jeff Driskel, who is currently on Houston’s practice squad, is expected to back up Mills.
