Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen is leaving Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs after eight years with the club. The 33-year-old player’s contract expired at the end of the 2019/20 season, and two sides haven’t been able to agree on a new one.

Tottenham confirmed the news on their social media via tribute video.

Vertonghen also went on Twitter to say his goodbyes.

“So my time at the club comes to an end,” he tweeted on Monday. “Thank you for all the support over the years. You’ve been amazing. We had many unbelievable memories, but for now, it’s goodbye.”

Jan Vertonghen joined Tottenham in 2012 from Ajax and has played 315 games for the club. The next step in his career is most likely to return to Ajax, as the Eredivisie side tried to acquire him in January but couldn’t agree to terms with the Spurs.

There is also a possibility for Vertonghen to remain in the Premier League. Recent reports indicated that Belgium international is a target for Manchester City as the team’s manager Pep Guardiola sees him as a short-term fix for his inconsistent defense.

Aside from Vertonghen, Tottenham also confirmed that backup goalie Michel Vorm will leave the club after his contract expired. Worm has been in London since 2014 and has made 48 appearances in all competitions.
