The Los Angeles Chargers have been dealt a tough blow in their attempts to turn around their disappointing season. According to the team’s head coach, Brandon Staley, Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa will likely be placed on Injured Reserve with a foot sprain.

Bosa will miss at least four weeks if he ends up on IR, but there is a chance he won’t return at all by the end of the season. When asked about it, Staley said that it is “to be determined” whether Bosa plays again in 2023.

Bosa’s injury came in the first quarter of a 23-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The 28-year-old found himself in the pile of players during the Packers’ run attempt and was seen limping after the play ended. He was later carted off to the locker room and didn’t return.

Joey Bosa was one of the rare positives for a struggling Chargers’ defense this season. Despite dealing with various minor injuries earlier in the season, Bosa managed to rack up 20 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.

When he is healthy, Bosa is one of the best defenders in the league. The issue is that he hasn’t managed to stay like that consistently since entering the league in 2016. Due to a combination of hamstring, groin, and muscle injuries, he only played 16 games in three out of seven seasons as a pro. After the latest setback, it will be three full seasons in eight years.

Now that the Los Angeles Rams have officially been eliminated from the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers, the Los Angeles Chargers can move in on defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.

According to reports, the Chargers have already agreed to terms that will make the now-former Rams defensive coordinator their new head coach. The Chargers met with Staley for the second time on Sunday and a deal is expected to be signed soon now that the Rams are no longer playing.

Staley’s rise in the ranks has been very quick, with this year being his first as a defensive coordinator. Staley got his start in the NFL as an outside linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears in 2017. He then took the same position with the Denver Broncos before accepting the defensive coordinator job with the Rams in 2020.

The Chargers look to be a good fit for Staley, who will have top-tier talent at his disposal, namely edge rusher Joey Bosa and star safety Derwin Hames leading the defense. Staley also has quarterback Justin Herbert, who is expected to be named Rookie of the Year after a record-breaking 2020 season.

Staley is also expected to retain offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who will be expected to continue shaping Herbert into a long-term franchise quarterback.

Los Angeles Chargers have reached an extension with Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Bosa inked a five-year deal, which will keep him with the organization through 2025.

Bosa, who had 11.5 sacks and 67 tackles in 2019, was entering the last year of his rookie deal. He was Bolts’ third overall pick in 2016.

Reportedly, Bosa’s new contract will earn him $135 million with $78 million guaranteed at signing and a total of $102 million in guarantees. The 25-year-old player’s $27 million annual salary makes him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. The previous record was held by DE Myles Garret, who received a five-year, $125 million extension from Cleveland Browns earlier this month.

This is also the record for the franchise, as Chargers never gave $100+ million deal to a player before.

During his previous four years in NFL, Joey Bosa established himself as one of the most disruptive defenders in the league. He had double-digits in sacking in three of four years, missing the mark only in 2017 when foot injury limited him to just seven games.

Bosa’s career stats include 201 tackles, 40.0 sacks, six forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He made the Pro Bowl in two seasons.

Los Angeles Chargers are so impressive lately that most people forgot they have managed to go on a six-game winning streak without their best defensive player, defensive end Joey Bosa. The 23-year-old Pro Bowler injured his foot back in August and was forced to miss this part of the 2018 season. Luckily for the Chargers, it looks like Bosa is making progress in his recovery since he is set to return to practice according to team’s head coach Anthony Lynn.

“Very excited (to see him out there),” – Lynn told reporters on Thursday. “He’s been around the whole time, and he’s been working on the side, but it’s going to be nice to see him out there with his teammates in team drills.”

While Joey Bosa’s return to practice is an encouraging sign, Lynn warns that this doesn’t mean he will be playing on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

“He hasn’t played football in 13 (or) 14 weeks, whatever it is,” – he added. “So we have to be careful putting him back in. (We’ve) got to get him back in slowly. If he does well in drills, and then maybe gets some team reps, (then) it is possible he could play some snaps (on Sunday).”

After playing college football with Ohio State, Joey Bosa entered the 2016 NFL Draft where he was selected third overall by the Los Angeles Chargers. He had an impressive rookie season being named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year while following that up with a Pro Bowl selection in 2017.

Bosa’s NFL career stats include 111 tackles, 23.0 sacks, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
