]]>Beilein and the Cavs both wanted to find a way to get the 67-year-old coach out of the five-year contract he signed last summer, as both the team and the coach saw that he was unable to connect with professional players and succeed as a leader of the team.
The New York native had trouble establishing authority and finding the correct coaching style in the NBA. Coming from college basketball, an environment in which coaches have more control over their players, Beilein reportedly found it difficult to loosen up his authoritative nature while dealing with professional players.
Players have accused Beilein of treating them “like a dictator” and “like children” during his tenure as head coach, according to team sources.
This, in combination with the Cavaliers’ last-place standing in the NBA’s Eastern Conference at 14-40, made the situation in Cleveland unsustainable.
Assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff, formerly the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and one of Beilein’s former assistants, will take over as interim head coach.

]]>According to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, Cavaliers and Beilein came to terms on Sunday, and have agreed to a five-year deal. Sources say that the 66-year-old coach already informed Michigan that he will be leaving to Cleveland.
During his coaching career, John Beilein went through almost all levels of basketball including high school level, junior college, as well as NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I. He was hired as Michigan’s coach in 2007 and since then led the team to two Final Four appearances and two Big Ten tournament titles. Beilein will leave Michigan with 278–150 record, while his overall coaching record stands at 754–425.
According to reports, Beilein had offers from NBA for several years now but decided to wait for the right opportunity. He was approached by Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic last season but ended up rejecting the offers as he didn’t like the overall situation in which these franchises were at that moment.
Cavs’ ended the 2018/19 regular season with 19-63 record, which was tied for second worst in the NBA.
