Cleveland Cavaliers have been looking all over the NBA for their next head coach, interviewing several assistants including San Antonio Spurs’ Ettore Messina and Denver Nuggets’ Wes Unseld Jr. Still, Cavs’ ended up going down a different route and will hire Michigan University’s John Beilein.

According to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, Cavaliers and Beilein came to terms on Sunday, and have agreed to a five-year deal. Sources say that the 66-year-old coach already informed Michigan that he will be leaving to Cleveland.

During his coaching career, John Beilein went through almost all levels of basketball including high school level, junior college, as well as NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I. He was hired as Michigan’s coach in 2007 and since then led the team to two Final Four appearances and two Big Ten tournament titles. Beilein will leave Michigan with 278–150 record, while his overall coaching record stands at 754–425.

According to reports, Beilein had offers from NBA for several years now but decided to wait for the right opportunity. He was approached by Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic last season but ended up rejecting the offers as he didn’t like the overall situation in which these franchises were at that moment.

Cavs’ ended the 2018/19 regular season with 19-63 record, which was tied for second worst in the NBA.
