]]>Grizzlies announced on Monday that they have recalled Josh Jackson, a former lottery pick, from their G League affiliate Memphis Hustle. Jackson made 26 appearances this season in G League, contributing with eye-catching 20.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. He was also impactful on the defensive end, averaging 1.4 steals and 1.5 blocks.
Josh Jackson broke into the league with Phoenix Suns, who took him fourth overall in the 2017 NBA Draft. Jackson showed promise in his rookie season, averaging 13.1 points and 4.6 rebounds en route to NBA All-Rookie Second Team selection. However, he regressed in his sophomore year, struggling to remain consistent on the court, while also dealing with off-court issues.
Suns ended up trading Jackson to Grizzlies in a salary dump move in the summer of 2019. Memphis decided not to include them into their roster, and instead ship the 22-year-old to G League. From this perspective, it looks like a good move as he finally might begin to show his potential.
Led by rookie Ja Morant, Grizzlies have been playing some great basketball recently and are currently 22-24. They are five games behind Oklahoma City Thunder on seventh, but two games ahead of San Antonio Spurs on the ninth.

]]>Jackson, who will start the season with Grizzlies G League affiliate Memphis Hustle, has an $8,930,242 team option for 2020-21 on his rookie deal. Although Memphis has a deadline until October 31st to pick up this option, according to The Daily Memphian‘s Chris Herrington, the team will let the deadline pass without exercising it.
Grizzlies landed Josh Jackson in July as part of Phoenix Suns’ efforts to clear up their salary. Jackson previously played two seasons with the Suns, but struggled with off-the-court issues and inconsistency.
In his rookie season, Jackson showed promise by making NBA All-Rookie Second Team after he averaged 13.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. In his sophomore year, however, his numbers declined all over the scoreboard, and he failed to make the jump Phoenix expected him to make.
After a disappointing season, and several cases of problematic behavior, Jackson became expendable, and Suns jumped on the opportunity to part ways with him. Grizzlies, on the other hand, were happy to take a chance on a young player with a big upside. If things don’t work out, they will be able to let him walk away next summer and have no losses.

]]>As part of the trade, the Suns are also sending De’Anthony Melton and two second-round picks to Grizzlies, while getting Kyle Korver and Jevon Carter in return. Suns are expected to waive Korver in the coming days, allowing the veteran to sign with a championship contender.
Phoenix’ motivation for the deal was clearing the salary space so they could sign point guard Ricky Rubio, with whom they agreed to a three-year, $51 million deal several days ago. Memphis on the other hand, is taking a gamble that they could unlock Jackson’s potential and end up getting a quality player on the cheap.
Suns had big expectations for Josh Jackson when they drafted him, but the former Kansas Jayhawks man never managed to justify them during his two years in the league. Jackson did show flashes of his talent but was largely inconsistent on the floor while having off-court issues as well.
Jackson’ NBA averages include 12.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.
